Chapter 8- The Potions Master
"Look. There,"
"Where?"
"Next to the girl with the black hair,"
"The girl with the red hair?"
"Did you see her face?"
"Did you see her scar?"
Whimpers followed Serena the moment she and Adelinda had left their dormitories. People lining up outside their classrooms stood tiptoe to get a look at Serena or Harry, or people would double back to walk passed to twins in the corridors again, staring.
Serena wished they wouldn't, because she and Adelinda were trying to memorize the halls to avoid getting lost in the future and it was not the easiest thing to do when people were in fount of them all the time.
"Serena," Serena looked up from her book, Hogwarts, A History, she had started reading it this morning, wanting to learn more about the place she and her brother were going to be living for the next 7 years.
"Yeah?" She asked looking at Adelinda, who was sitting next to her.
"Your brother is not here yet" Adelinda said pointing to the two open seats in front of Hermione and Christopher.
"I wonder where he is?" Serena said as Professor McGonagall started to begin class.
"Transfiguration is one of the most complex and dangerous magic that you will ever learn here at Hogwarts" She stated. "Anyone messing around in my class will leave and never come back. You have be warned" She said looking towards the Slytherin students before she disappeared.
The class gasped as a dark grey tabby cat leapt up onto her desk. "Wow" Serena whispered to Adelinda as the class started to write down the notes that were on the board.
Suddenly the door flew open and the entire class turned to see Harry and Ron running into the room.
"Whew! We made it!" Ron said. "Can you imagine the look on McGonagall's face if we were late?" Ron said breathless to Harry as they slowly walked to their desk.
McGonagall jumped off the desk and in mid-air, she changed back into her human self.
"That was bloody brilliant!" Ron said as McGonagall stood in front of him and Harry.
"Thank-you for that assessment Mr. Weasley. Perhaps it would be more useful if I transfigured Mr. Potter and yourself into a pocket watch. That way one of you might be on time" Professor McGonagall said.
"We got lost" Harry protested.
"Then perhaps a map? I trust you don't need one to find your seats" Professor McGonagall said as the boys sat down at their desk.
After a lot of complicated notes they had to take, the class was given a match and started to try to turn it into a needle. By the end of the lesson only Hermione, Christopher, Adelinda and Serena had made a difference in their matches. Professor McGonagall showed the class how all four of their matches had turned all silver and pointed.
The first class, the first year Slytherin students had on Friday morning was Potions with Gryffindor, taught by Professor Snape. Potions took place down in one of classrooms in the dungeons near the Slytherin common room. The potions room was cold, dark and quite creepy with pickled animals floating in jars all around the room.
Snape started class by taking roll, he paused at Harry's name.
"Ah, yes" he said. "Harry Potter our new- celebrity."
Draco and his friends Crabbe and Goyle snickered behind their hands and Serena shot Malfoy a cold glare from her seat next to Adelinda, which Draco returned with a smirk.
Snape also paused on Serena's name and looked at her for a moment. Serena caught a flash of pain in his eyes which as soon as she saw it, the pain vanished into sorrow.
"There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in my class. I could teach you all how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper in death. At least, if you all aren't as big a group of dunderheads as I normally have to teach.
Silence followed this little speech as Serena looked at her brother, who was sitting behind her with Ron and Hermione.
"Potter!" Professor Snape said suddenly. "What would I get it I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" Snape said directing the question to Harry.
Hermione's and Christopher's hands shot up into the air as Harry looked at Ron, who looked as stumped as he was.
"I don't know, sir" Harry said.
"Let's try again, shall we?" Snape said staring coldly at Harry. "What is the difference between monkswood and wolfsbane?"
"I don't know, sir" Harry said as Serena looked through her potions book to try to find the answer.
"Miss Potter!" Professor Snape said causing Serena to drop her book on the deck as she looked up at Snape.
"I hope you learn quickly if you are reading in my class. Tell me Miss Potter, Where would you look if I asked you to find me a bezoar?" Snape asked.
"A bezoar is a stone taken from a goat's stomach and can be used to save someone if poisoned" Serena answered looking into Professor Snape's cold black eyes.
Snape seemed slightly surprised that she knew the answer but quickly moved on with the lesson. "Now I am going to pair you up and you and your partner will make a potion that will be used to cure boils. It is fairly simple and if you can't cope with it…. Well that's pretty pathetic."
Professor Snape began pairing the class up when he stopped at Serena and Adelinda. "Miss Potter, you will work with Mr. Granger and Miss Malfoy, you will be working with Miss Ganger".
Serena bid goodbye to Adelinda as she and Hermione switched seats.
"Hey Christopher" Serena said as she sat next to Christopher. "You know you can just call me Chris, Serena" Chris said as he opened I book. "Right well let's get started on this potion" Serena said as they got to work.
Towards the end of class, Professor Snape walked around the classroom, criticizing everyone, when there was a loud crash and a whimper, Serena and Chris looked up from their potion to see Neville drenched in the potion as boils started spurting all over his body. Professor Snape cleared away the mess with a wave of his wand and turned to Neville.
"Idiot boy!" He snapped. "Did you put in the porcupine quills after you took the potion off the fire? Potter, why didn't you tell him! Five points from Gryffindor!"
Neville started to whimper as the boils started to pop. "Take him to the hospital wing" Snape snapped at Seamus before he turned to the rest of the class and screamed "Class dismissed."
