Chapter 5: Sweet Unity
By the time they had finished their stroll round the parts of Hampstead Heath that meant so much to Cassie, it was about five thirty. Sid began to feel hungry despite having had a meal at midday.
"Cass." said Sid, "I know I had lunch with Maxxie, but I'm beginning to feel hungry again. What about you?"
"I grabbed a few bites at lunchtime." said Cassie, "It would be nice to have an early dinner with you. Where are you going to take me?"
"I'll leave that to you, Cass." said Sid, "You must know a few places round here."
"I'll take you to a nice lively pub where we can get a meal." said Cassie, "They serve food and we can spend a quiet hour or so there. If there's time after that, we'll go back to my little place for something warm and soothing."
"I like the sound of that." said Sid.
Sid and Cassie made their way from the heath and into Hampstead Village, found the pub and settled down to their first meal together for two years.
"You look as you're enjoying that." commented Sid.
"I am." said Cassie, "I'm beginning to believe that I'm heading for a sweet future at last."
After they had eaten, they made their way to Cassie's bed-sit. They both removed their shoes. Cassie made sure that Sid was comfortable on the sofa and went to the kitchen. She returned with two mugs of hot chocolate and put them on the coffee table. "I'm not embarrassed." said Sid, "You just startled me a bit. I was wondering how far you were going to go, but it is lovely to see so much of your skin. You're still beautiful"
"Thank you, Sid." said Cassie, "That was such a sweet thing to say."
"Anyway, thanks for the hot chocolate." said Sid.
While they were drinking, they discussed some practical aspects of Cassie's move to Bristol, such as where she would find work and how much space she would need for her clothes and other bits and pieces. "I don't know." said Sid. "I would guess hopefully, that some part of your mind might have been thinking about me. I wish you'd acted on that daydream, Cass. Our heartbreak would have ended so much sooner."
"As I said, I was trying to keep to that silly promise not to look for you," said Cassie, "but I've really missed being with you; being loved by you. I want you so much, Sid."
As Cassie said this, she snuggled up against Sid. When she did this, he placed his now empty mug on the coffee table, continued gently stroking her bare shoulders and kissed her cheek. They were both feeling a little depressed, so they didn't say very much to each other. After two buses, they arrived at Paddington and headed for the ticket barrier.
"I suppose this is it." said Cassie, sadly.
"It won't be for long." said Sid, "When you're ready to come to Bristol, I'll drive up to London to help you move your stuff. Incidentally, Maxxie made a suggestion earlier today."
"What was that?" asked Cassie.
"Perhaps, you, me, Caterina and Maxxie could get together for a meal." said Sid.
"That's a lovely idea." said Cassie, smiling, "But we'll have to do it before I leave London."
"That's true." said Sid, "If you let me know when you can leave, I'll call Maxxie and see if we can arrange something for when I come up to bring you back home."
"Oh sweet Sid!" said Cassie, "I like it that you think of Bristol as my home. I'll call you tomorrow morning. You'd better be thinking about getting on that train."
"Not just yet." said Sid, "I haven't said 'goodbye' to you properly."
He embraced his sweet Cassie and gave her a long passionate farewell kiss.
"I love you." said Cassie as she disengaged herself from Sid, "Next time we see each other, we won't be saying 'goodbye'. I can't wait."
"Anyway, I'd better get on the train." said Sid, "Goodbye my sweetness! I'll see you in a few days. Don't forget to call me."
"Goodbye, gentle Sid." said Cassie, "I'll call you tomorrow morning. Have a safe journey."
"Farewell my divine Cassie. I love you so much." said Sid as he got on board.
Cassie stood on the platform gazing after the departing train until it was out of sight, before returning to her bed-sit in the knowledge that she would be back with her sweet, gentle Sid very soon. Sid meanwhile returned to Bristol, confident that he had restored his relationship with the one girl he truly loved.
