Of street fights, banter or how they all became best friends
There were blood stains and sweat on the sidewalk. A loud pounding inside the neon lighted gym still disrupted the silent night. Darkness enveloped the five remaining that could still stand. Heartbeats echoed to a beat not like the one music gave them. It was a Friday the day they decided to rave with the lost ones. They called them that in mock banter once. It ended up sticking like a new tradition for the five. Traditions that were about to begin.
When Megan met the blonde chick with black boxing gloves and haughty attitude she felt her insides churn weirdly. She saw her the first time working out in an empty and almost abandoned gym located outside campus. Megan was promised a tour outside the college for the first time from Bette but she had called her two hours later saying something had come up. Obviously Bette was an RA so Megan didn't take it personally.
As she walked through the wide streets that surrounded the campus she got to the nearby town. She only found old dry cleans and shabby restaurants until she got to a place near a hotdog stand where dry echoing noises resounded. Megan peeked through a dirty glass door only to find a girl in green spandex kicking a punching bag like she could break the ceiling with it.
A normal person would have run, Megan thought about that at first, she should have minded her own business and walked away, but somehow something possessed her to open the brown tainted glass door and step foot inside the dark wide room.
As far as introductions went it could have been better. For starters Megan didn't know the blonde girl was expecting someone because she addressed her as Jade. When Megan raised her voice to greet her she saw the blonde darken her eyes and tense her shoulders as if Megan wasn't intimidated enough. And to top it she heard the glass door slam and felt a hard wall like body behind her.
Megan could only feel the roughness on the man's voice as he asked "Who's this?"
"That's what I was trying to find out." The blonde girl answered crossing her arms and cocking a hip. Megan felt so out of place, Oh God why did she do this. In her whole life why did she enter a stranded gym outside of college to greet dangerous looking people?
She felt her brown hair move lightly and felt the body behind her move inside the darkness of the room. Megan was already making scenarios where she could see her body ending in a bag deep in a lake. Then the light blinded her for a second and all she could see where black spots.
Now with a clear view of the place she realized the wall behind her had been the boy who took the weird looking box from the professor at campus. In the light the blonde kept her menacing gray eyes aimed on her face. Oh boy why did she open the door?
"So, do you have a name?" The blonde said walking gracefully around her like a feline surrounding a prey.
"M-m-y na-name sure…um it's Megan?" She stuttered.
The other girl raised her eyebrow slowly and Megan almost felt as if she was mocking her. Abruptly the blonde turned until she was facing the boy that was now at the back of the gym lifting what looked like heavy round weights. Megan was no fighter she didn't really know how her legs remained upright.
Finally Artemis looked at her again now with a smirk "What do you think Conner?"
The boy raised his head and looked straight to Megan loudly dropping the weight to leave a tense remaining sound. "Why did you come here?" He asked filling the loud moment.
"I just thought I could say hi to her." Megan said nervously grabbing her hair and looking at the girl trying to find some kind of kindness or support from a fellow female and to avoid the boy's penetrating blue eyes.
"She better leave." Conner said now absorbed in organizing his work space.
Megan didn't find that idea all that wrong, she was desperate to leave the moment she opened the door. "Look Megan we are not that fun just go look for some preppy girl to hang out." The blonde sighed almost urging her to the door with every step she took.
Megan was almost out the dirty glass door when it opened for her almost throwing her out the way. Two bulky guys appeared carrying huge equipment on their shoulders. She didn't need to be told to scramble her way out from them. "Who's the new girl Artemis?" One with dirty brown hair asked directing his cold black eyes to the blonde.
Artemis took her tense and intimidating pose again. "No one, she stumbled here by accident." Megan felt her arm being pulled up and pushed to the door. "Leave! Now!" with that she was stumbling back into the wide street of an old fashioned town and an abandoned gym with a locked dirty glass door.
Funny as that went for Megan she was somehow in front of the gym again all in the same day. Only this time she was forced by Karen and Bette. The place was filled with pounding dirty rap music and black and white lights that made it look like it could be spaceship.
"Come on, they said the coolest people hang out here!" Karen squealed happily. She had worn her classic short yellow dress that attracted men like bees to honey. Megan liked it because Karen's dark skin looked radiant with it but that wasn't her main focus right now.
Apparently she was the only of her two cheerleading friends that thought this was a bad idea. Bette was dragging her to the place slowly but surely. Her heart almost jumped through her chest when she felt someone push her.
"My bad cutie." A lanky ginger boy told her half winking. She wasn't sure though with the darkness of the night and suddenly he was disappearing inside the box of raging hormonal college students.
"Megan you didn't even try right there!" Bette hollered happily clicking her heels inside finally yanking Megan with her. Once inside her eyes couldn't even adjust properly with all the changes in lighting and the grinding of tall sweaty bodies.
She couldn't believe she was stepping inside twice. Barely making progress through the entire cluster fuck of teenagers, she got to the back of the gym where the "Conner" guy had been in the morning. To her disappointment instead of his weights there was a table with nachos and punch. The dj was at the side of it having the time of his life moving wildly with the crowd.
She really didn't feel comfortable, with all the darkness and good dancers and dangerous looking people. So when she found a side exit she was kind of happy to feel cool air hit her cheeks.
That was until she felt two rough hands grabbing her by the shoulders and harshly pushing her to the brick wall.
Megan squeaked and felt Conner's gruff voice on her ear hushing her. He smelled like tobacco and sweat and the alley smelled like cat piss. It was all new to her. Conner had blocked her view with his wide shoulders but she could hear the blonde Artemis yelling to someone. Then she heard a crunching sound like hitting a sand bag with bones.
Conner hugged her tighter to the wall. "Why did you come back?" He said irritated. She could see a vein pumping in his neck and hoped his anger was at whatever Artemis's punched and not her. She was going to kill Bette if she died here.
He sighed and the smell was too much for her she fisted her hands on his chest and punched until he pulled himself off. Now with a full view of the situation she felt like she wanted to go back into his muscle hard body shield.
Artemis had a gash running through her forearm, it was bleeding a lot. She looked too tired to even lift her hooded eyes. Her leather gloves looked bloody and her shirt had a huge rip at the middle displaying defined girl abs.
The blonde yelled at Conner. "Get her out!" Too late, they were surrounded by bulky men. She barely felt Conner pushing her until she was sandwiched between his and Artemis's back.
That's when she saw who they were fighting. Taller than Conner guys with muscles the size of watermelons and faces like ogres. Megan knew their muscles were not the result of exercise like the raven haired beside her.
One of them whistled high enough to make a dog deaf. "Shit." Artemis cursed evening her breath. That's when she realized they were all panting. Megan hadn't even thrown a punch yet she was heaving like she had run a mile.
She felt Conner clenching his fists until his knuckles were white. "What'chu got there babe?" A thin looking man said walking into the light. Megan was surprised she hadn't noticed his white, pasty skin in the darkness.
"I get this one." Artemis hissed crouching to kick the white man's legs faster than any of the ones standing on the alley. Megan saw the thin boy hit the cement with his skull cursing. He was out.
Megan felt herself gasp and Artemis had a grin on her face as if she had wanted to do that for a while. Unfortunately the other two took that as cue to charge. Conner easily knocked the first one with a harsh blow to his jaw.
Megan was trying to see how she could run out before any punch reached her. Then the watermelon arms man grabbed her hair pulling her feet off the floor. Shit, she remembered what pain felt like.
She saw Conner stop mid punch and his blue eyes widened.
"Drop it fellows, or she gets it." The man snarled maliciously grabbing Megan's arm letting her hair go a bit. That gave her enough sense to lift her leg up to kick his head. That didn't do much than blind him. Lucky for her Conner was yanking her from the goon until Artemis used her weight to flip the huge man all the way to the end of the alley.
"That was flexible." Artemis smiled amused, looking at the knocked out bodies she had taken care of feeling slightly proud. Megan turned to her with a full smile lifting her hands making the cliché cheerleading pose. "Go bumblebees!"
She almost sighed in relief when they heard a loud chuckle behind them. "What? Leaving? The party just started."
