Happy New Year! Hooray! A new chapter! *gets shot at for being gone so long* Although to be fair this isn't the longest I've gone without posting...
Anyway, enjoy this little story I came up with after reading a "met in an online RPG AU" prompt... thingy.
"What do you mean I need to be at least level twenty to do this?" Danny Fenton yelled at his computer screen. He was playing the newest DLC map from the online game "DOOMED" and as frustrated at the game itself. "Why did my old file get corrupted?"
He sighed but continued level grinding on the samurai warriors in the 3rd level of the game. He was level 18 and these warriors just were not giving him enough experience. As he slashed and blasted away at the enemies, someone else joined the server. The server was one that was very rarely played and was created by his best friend, who mentioned something about specific locations and IP addresses.
Who else would be playing this late? I don't recognize the username and no one is ever on this late, even in the summer. He thought. The players name was 'Chaos' and was clad all in black with medieval looking armour and a single black ponytail atop his head. Clicking on the name, Danny read he was level 19 and unlike Danny's wizard class, he was a warrior class character. After watching Chaos kill several samurai, he opened up the chat box.
GhostBoy: Grinding for the new map too?
Chaos: You know it. Kinda dumb, but my old character wouldn't load on my new computer.
GhostBoy: My file was corrupted so I'm on the same boat. What level did you used to be?
Chaos: Almost level 60. I was that close to getting a sweet new sword and mount.
GhostBoy: Man, that reeks. They were pretty sweet. I made it to 62 so I didn't get to enjoy them for very long.
Chaos: Was it as amazing as everyone told me it was? I couldn't tell if they were playing me or not.
GhostBoy: It was. They decimated everything. Such broken items
Chaos: UGH. Now I'm just angry. I need to get them before they go away next month.
GhostBoy: Work together to beat that hard boss in the next level that gives out crazy experience?
Chaos: Totally! Need that exp!
GhostBoy: I'm Danny by the way.
Chaos: I'm Sam. Now let's go kick monster butt!
The two of them played for another hour before Sam signed off to go to bed. But not before promising to come back on the next night so the two of them could team up against the next boss. That night alone they had made it to level 25 and explored a small part of the new map which was every bit as cool as they had thought it would be.
The next day Danny met up with his best friend Tucker Foley for lunch to tell him about his new DOOMED friend.
"His player name is Chaos and his real name is Sam. He's pretty cool and man does he know his way around the game. I may have been at a higher level in my old game, but the things this guy knew Tucker! You've gotta play soon so I can show you."
"You have a total crush on this guy. I rarely see you talk about girls like this." Tucker said with a smirk.
"I do not. He's just a great guy."
"Whatever you say man. Oh and speaking of girls, how's Jazz?"
Danny rolled his eyes. He knew his best friend had always had a small crush on his sister, even if he had never said so. "She's doing well, even with all that schoolwork. Psychology is harder than it looks. Although it looks like she'll have some free time next week. Maybe you should do something fun with her."
Tucker's face turned red. "Why me?"
"Because I'm busy." Danny replied.
"With what? It's not like you have a girlfriend. You going to play DOOMED with your boyfriend?"
Danny punched Tucker in the arm and took a bite of his sandwich. "You know I like girls dude."
"Love doesn't see gender Danny."
Danny scoffed. "I've known the guy for less than twenty-four hours. Love doesn't apply here."
Tucker simply raised his eyebrow and bit into his burger.
That night, Danny rubbed his hands nervously, though he didn't know why. Tucker's earlier comment flashed in his mind but he shook his head and ignored the feeling. He spent some time grinding on lower level enemies only gaining one level in the process, not wanting to leap too far ahead of Sam before he got on. Around one a.m. he logged onto the same server as Danny.
Chaos: Ready to kick some serious monster ass?
GhostBoy: You know it! Which do you wanna take on first?
Chaos: I was thinking we take on a boss that holds one of the 7 silver keys. They have good exp AND items lol
GhostBoy: Good call. Should we try for all 7 keys while we're at it?
Chaos: Bring it
Four keys later, they had both made it to level 35 and Danny was starting to get flustered talking to Sam. Never having met or seen him, he forgot this person on the other end was a boy. He just seemed like a genderless person that Danny had definitely developed a crush on. Not that he'd ever tell Tucker that. Sam was funny and cool and Danny stopped caring that he had always considered himself straight. He had feelings for this guy, different from the ones he felt towards his friends and family but also different from the ones he felt towards that hot girl in his grade, Paulina. Even after only knowing this guy for one day over the internet he knew what he felt. But what if he's way older? We haven't even discussed ages or anything. I'd better ask, Danny thought.
GhostBoy: Hey, by the way how old are you?
Chaos: I'm 16. You?
GhostBoy: Just turned 17 a week ago
Chaos: Happy belated birthday then, lol
GhostBoy: Thanks. Still don't have my license yet though
Chaos: Got mine the day I was old enough, even though my parents INSISTED I continue to use our chauffeur
GhostBoy: Chauffeur?
Chaos: Yep. Kinda rich. Kinda also don't care
GhostBoy: I wouldn't exactly call myself poor, but my parents would rather buy new tech than pay for a driver
Chaos: Your parents already sound better than mine
GhostBoy: That's because you haven't met them. They're known as crazies. Love 'em but they can be embarrassing.
Chaos: Still sound better than mine. They always want to dress me up for their rich people functions. It's awful
GhostBoy: My parents were invited to one of those and made my sister and I go. It was boring and the other teens were such snobs.
Chaos: If we're ever at the same function, I'll keep you company.
GhostBoy: That sounds much more enjoyable
Danny's heart raced at the prospect of hanging out with Sam at some point in the future. He wanted to know him better outside of DOOMED but he was sure that Sam lived on the other side of the country or at least somewhere too far to just drop by. He felt awkward asking where he was from, but with school a week away Danny knew he wouldn't be up this late playing every night. Thankfully for him an hour later Sam asked about school.
Chaos: Are you back at school next week?
GhostBoy: Yup. No more late night DOOMED sessions haha
Chaos: I know, it's gonna suck. I'm starting at a new school this year too
GhostBoy: Oh really? Different school in the same city or different city entirely?
Chaos: Different city. Small town thats a big change from the big city. I'm from Chicago.
GhostBoy: Small towns aren't so bad. I'm from one and aside from the fact there's only one high school, it's alright
Chaos: Even a supposedly haunted small town?
GhostBoy: How did you know my town is known as haunted?
Chaos: I was talking about the town I moved to. Amity Park is known as the most haunted city in America
Danny's brain stopped functioning for a second. Amity Park? Sam had just moved to Amity Park? That meant they would be going to school together!
GhostBoy: Casper High?
Chaos: Yea! Wait, do you go there?
GhostBoy: Yes!
Chaos: Oh cool! We should see who can recognize the other one first. Make a game out of it.
GhostBoy: Sounds fun. What should we do if we think we know? Although it'll be easy for me since I've known everyone since kindergarden.
Chaos: Even the ninth graders? I'm not very tall.
GhostBoy: Dammit, you're right! Alright, you're on
Chaos: First person to figure it out has to... I don't know. We have a week to figure it out.
GhostBoy: I'll let you know if I have any ideas. Let's get back to kicking monster butt for now.
Sam answered by stabbing a werewolf in the face with her sword.
The whole next week, Danny regaled Tucker with stories of his time playing DOOMED with Sam, and eventually told him that he figured he was bisexual or something because he didn't care that Sam was a boy. He told him it made sense about those feelings Danny had for the babysitter he'd had when he was nine while Jazz had been at science camp. Every day that brought him closer to school, Danny became more anxious.
He and Sam had decided to just leave a note for the other with either GhostBoy or Chaos showing it was them. Danny had practiced writing Chaos in such a way that it would actually be legible for Sam considering his history of awful handwriting. The last night before school started, Danny and Sam were online much earlier playing DOOMED.
Chaos: Ready to lose tomorrow?
GhostBoy: No way! I have the advantage still, and I'm going to use it.
Chaos: You keep thinking that GhostBoy
GhostBoy: I will. I am going to win. See you tomorrow.
Chaos: Tomorrow
The next morning Danny was up before his alarm. He tried to make his hair look presentable but gave up and went with his usual messy bed head look. He put on a dark pair of jeans and a white t-shirt with a red logo and trimming. When he walked down the stairs for breakfast at 7:30, his parents were startled by the fact he was up and dressed that early.
"You're up early. I know it's the first day of your senior year, but..." his mom said trailing off.
"I had trouble sleeping so I decided to get up when I just woke up this morning."
"Trouble sleeping? Are you feeling okay?"
Danny shook his head. "Just trying to get my sleep pattern regulated. I messed it up the last couple of weeks."
His mom ruffled his hair as he ate his cereal. "Alright sweetie, have a good day at school."
"Thanks mom."
He met up with Tucker on his way to school like they usually did, only this time Tucker spent the entire time grinning mischievously at him.
"What? Do I have something on my face?"
"Yea," Tucker said. "Anxiety."
"Oh, ha ha. This isn't funny Tuck."
Tucker laughed. "How can it not be? I haven't seen you act this way in a long time. Calm down dude, he's just a guy."
"Just a guy? You know I am with girls I like, this is even worse! Now I have to worry about Dash's potential mockery as well."
"Speaking of which..." Tucker said as Dash came into view. The football jock turned around and eyed his favorite punching bag.
"Hey Fentonio, ready for your back to school beating?" Dash said heading in their direction.
"Crap! I really don't need humiliation and a black eye today." Danny said, eyes searching frantically for somewhere to run. He saw a large group of students walking by and ran through them and straight into the school, away from the bully.
He stopped running when he neared the school office and noticed a very pretty girl leaving it. She was dressed mostly in black, with a black tank top and a black and green plaid skirt. Her tights were purple and it ended with black combat boots. Her hair was shoulder length and jet black. Even with all her dark makeup, Danny could tell she did have a pretty face. She looked up at him and smiled before turning and walking down the hallway. Danny's heart was racing but he assumed it was his anxiousness and from running away from Dash. The bell rang and Danny realized he was now late for class, and across the building from Mr. Lancer's classroom. He ran into the classroom just as attendance was being taken. He noticed the girl he had seen in the office that morning was sitting beside him at the back of the class and his heart started to race again. He smile at her then sat down as Lancer started the lesson.
Danny spent the whole morning scoping out the school between classes for Sam who by that point Danny wasn't sure was even there. That is, until he opening his locker at lunch time and sitting on his books was a small piece of paper with neat handwriting saying "Hi GhostBoy -Chaos." Danny whipped his head around, looking for who could have sent the note, but aside from him and Tucker, there were only three other people in the hallway. A football jock Danny knew was named Devin, one of the senior band girls, and new girl who getting things from her locker across the hall.
"Danny?" Tucker asked, looking concerned.
"He won. Sam beat me to it. I've known almost everyone in this school since the fifth grade and I was beaten."
Suddenly he heard a snicker coming from the new girl, who's locker was now closer as she leaned against it. Danny and Tucker watched as she walked over to them and put out her hand, ready to shake.
"Hey there," she said. "I'm Sam."
Danny's jaw dropped and Tucker practically fell over laughing. "You're Sam? But, but... I thought..." Danny sputtered.
"That I was a boy? Yea, I know. You've been calling me 'dude' and I never bothered to tell you I wasn't. I also used that to my advantage in our little game," she said.
"Well Danny," Tucker said still snickering. "At least now you know you aren't gay."
Danny whacked Tucker in the gut. "Dude, I said I was bisexual, and besides you need to shut up."
Sam watched them and said, "What's this about bisexuality?"
"Nothing/Danny is!" Danny and Tucker said simultaneously.
Sam laughed and Danny thought it sounded lovely. He didn't care that she wasn't exactly the person he thought she was, he just wanted to know her better.
"Did you want to eat lunch with us?" Danny asked.
"I'd love to." she said then started walking to the cafeteria.
I had a hard time making this LGBT friendly in the sense that I didn't want Danny to just suddenly be gay and then not so bisexual realization it is! I think there will be a new one soon...? I have a few written up, typing them is just a huge pain in the ass.
I've been home 2 weeks and done barely anything, I can't believe I didn't even try to fanfiction. But I still have over a week so I'll hopefully have more in this new year!
