For him, their childhood was a patchwork quilt of memories—some dark, some light, some happy, most sad. He remembered hating everything so much that just the act of living, was revenge on existence itself. Come and get me, he would think grimly, I'd like to see you try.
And in the midst of it all; Naruto and Sakura. A weak, watery ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak life. They were a tether—his tether—to a world that no longer made sense. So when Sakura one day said, "That night…when you left. Did you think my love for you was just skin deep?"
He was truly surprised. If Sakura was his tether to this world, then that night was a tether to his humanity. "Why would you say that?"
She shrugged. "You—I…"
A sigh.
A pause.
"I just want you to know that—even then, stupid as I was, I loved you," she said finally, steel in her voice. "And I always will. Always."
His eyes, usually glittering with remorse, now shined with a something soft, a ghost of a memory, a smile. He put his hand on her's. "Thank you, Sakura."
