"If we—" Sakura started, then stopped.

He gave her a look. What? His eyes said.

She swallowed, let out a breath. "We should decide who Sarada's guardians should be…if ever—something might happen…"

It took him a moment to understand what she was saying. And it took him forever to run through the unforgiving memories of a childhood suffered alone, in an immaculately neat apartment that was a house but never a home. His eyes hardened. Never, never ever, would he allow his child to suffer through that.

"Naruto," he said firmly.

"Ino," Sakura said at the same time.

They stared at each other in uncomfortable silence. Mortality, it seemed, was a hard fact to face, especially for people such as them—god like powers were a deceptive thing to behold.

Sakura gave him an appraising look. "It's not that I…" she started, trailed off uncertainly. "Naruto's great," she started again, reaching for his hand, "just—he already has so much on his plate."

What went unsaid was, Have you seen Boruto, lately?

It was a fact Sasuke couldn't deny. While Naruto was an exceptional Hokage, and a loyal friend—to a fault, Sasuke thought grimly, he had too many responsibilities already, to be the family he needed him for Sarada to be.

"Okay," he nodded finally, "Ino."

Sakura gave him a grim smile, "We'll draw the official paper's, tomorrow. Just in case."

"Just in case," he repeated, squeezing her hand reassuringly.
