I don't own Twilight

Day by Day

Edward and I were standing at my locker. I twisted the lock to open it and the buzz of the other students filled my ears.

"Did you study for the test?" Edward asked as I reached for a book.

"Yes," I replied, "I think…" I was cut off by a deafening boom and I watched in horror as Edward crumpled to the ground. I looked up and saw Mike standing there with a gun pointed at the spot where Edward was just standing.

Mike started walking toward me slowly, the gun still pointed in my direction.

"No Mike," I pleaded, "Please don't do this."

"Sorry Bella," Mike said as he pulled the trigger.

I woke up with a start. I was drenched in sweat, and I was desperately trying to catch my breath. After I minute I was finally under enough control to roll over and check the time. I was shocked to realize that is was already noon.

I quickly snatched up my phone when I saw it sitting on the nightstand next my clock. I scrolled down, and when I found the number I was looking for I hit call. It rang once, then twice, and I felt the panic rising inside. By the third ring I was in full blown panic mode because I had convinced myself the worst had happened. Thankfully, he picked up right after the fourth ring.

"Hello?" Edward said.

"Edward, are you okay?" I asked as I worked once again to calm myself down.

"Yes," Edward said, and I could tell he was worried about me, "Bella, are you okay?"

"Yes, I am sorry I bothered you, I just…I just…" I tried to explain through panic that was still subsiding.

"Bella what is it? What is wrong?" Edward asked urgently, and I felt bad because I could tell he was starting to panic.

"I had another dream," I admitted quietly, "Mike shot you again."

"Oh Bella," Edward said sympathetically, "I'm so sorry."

"You don't need to apologize," I said, "It's not your fault."

"I know," Edward said, "but I am sorry this is happening to you."

"I'm sorry this is happening to me too," I replied with a sigh.

"Well, just so you know, I am alive and well," Edward said, "Actually, I'm home now, so I am doing very well at the moment."

"That is great Edward," I said and smiled. Edward's joy was contagious.

"When do you think you will be up for a visitor?" I asked.

"Whenever you feel like visiting," Edward replied.

"Is today too soon?" I asked, suddenly desperately needing to see Edward.

"Not at all," Edward replied.

"Good, I will be there soon," I said.

"See you soon," Edward said before hanging up. I pulled myself out of bed and hurried downstairs as quickly as I could; with one hand it wasn't all that quick.

"Good morning sweetie," my dad said when I made it downstairs. He was sitting on the couch reading the paper and mom was nowhere to be seen.

"Hi dad," I replied, "Where is Mom?"

"Your mom is back at the hotel with Phil," my dad explained.

"Oh, okay," I said, "Um, do you think you take me to see Edward today?"

"At the hospital?" he asked.

"No, at his house. He is home now," I replied.

"Well, I guess so," my dad said, "It would probably be good for you to get out."

"Thanks, Dad," I said and kissed his cheek, "I'm going to go get dressed."

Getting dressed proved to be more difficult than I thought. My mom wasn't there to help me, and no way was I asking my dad for help doing that. I managed to pull on some yoga pants and a sweatshirt. I was a little self conscious because I wasn't wearing a bra, but there was no way to get one on one-handed. The sweatshirt was big and covered me well, though.

I pulled a brush through my hair, added a head band, and brushed my teeth before heading back downstairs. My dad was in the kitchen making lunch when I walked downstairs. I sat at the table and he sat a plate with a sandwich and chips in front of me.

"Thanks Dad," I said as I began to eat.

"You're welcome Bells," my dad said as he sat down with his own plate of food. We ate quickly, and when we were done my dad washed our plates. I felt bad that I couldn't help, but it was out of the question. Once he was done, my dad helped me to the car and we were on our way. As my dad drove I realized I had never been to Edward's house and I actually had no idea where it was. My dad seemed to know the way, though, which I guess made sense because he was the police chief.

Edward's house was in the woods and it was kind of out of the way. It seemed like the turn off for his house would be impossible to find if you didn't know where it was. My mouth dropped open when I saw his house. It was huge. It was white with a huge wrap-around porch and lots of windows.

My dad and I walked slowly up the front porch steps. When we reached the top my dad rang the door bell. An attractive man with blonde hair and blue eyes opened the door and smiled warmly at us.

"Hello Dr. Cullen," my dad said.

"Hello Chief Swan," Dr. Cullen said, "Hello, Bella."

"Hi," I said shyly.

"How are you feeling?" Dr. Cullen asked.

"I'm okay," I replied.

"Edward told us what you did. It was very brave," Dr. Cullen said. "I can't thank you enough for trying to protect my son."

"You're welcome," I replied as a blush lit up my face, "Is it okay if I come in and see Edward?"

"Of course, come on in," Dr. Cullen said as he stepped aside so we could walk into the house. We walked in and I was struck once again by how amazing this house was. The rooms were big and airy and the sun was shining in the picture windows. We followed Dr. Cullen up a flight of stairs and down a hallway and came to a stop by a door at the end. Dr. Cullen led us into the room and I saw Edward, propped up in bed while a woman with caramel colored hair and the same green eyes as Edward fussed over him.

"Mom, I'm fine," Edward said as his mom fluffed his pillows.

"Hey, I almost lost you," his mom said, "I'm allowed to fuss."

"Okay," Edward replied quietly, "Sorry." Dr. Cullen cleared his throat and Edward and his mom turned to face us. Edward smiled when he saw me.

"Hi Bella," Edward said, "Hi, Chief Swan."

"Hello Edward," my dad said, "How are you feeling?"

"I'm alright," Edward replied.

"I wanted to thank you for your heroic actions," my dad said, "You stopped Mike, and in doing that you saved Bella's life."

"I just did what anyone would do, Chief Swan," Edward said.

"No, you did more," my dad said, "and please, call me Charlie."

"Alright Charlie," Edward said with smile.

"Bella, it's very nice to finally meet you," Edward's mom said.

"It's nice to meet you too, Mrs. Cullen," I replied.

"Esme," Esme said with a warm smile. Edward and I looked at each other and shared a smile. We stared at each other for a moment before I remembered our parents were in the room. I blushed and suddenly found Edward's carpet very interesting.

"Charlie, Carlisle, why don't we go downstairs," Esme said, taking pity on us, "I'll make us some coffee."

"Alright," Carlisle said and Charlie nodded. Edward and I watched silently as our parents left the room. Once they were gone, I went and sat on the edge of Edward's bed.

"Hi," Edward said as he took my good hand and held it gently in his.

"Hi," I replied.

"It's good to see you Bella," Edward said.

"It's really good to see you too," I said, "Especially after my dream."

"Do you want to tell me about it?" Edward asked.

"Okay," I said quietly.

"You don't have to," Edward said, sensing my hesitation.

"It's okay," I said, "We were by my locker and we were talking about a biology test. Out of nowhere you dropped to the floor and then Mike was standing behind you with his gun pointed where you had been standing. Mike walked toward me, and just as the gun went off I woke up."

"Bella I'm so sorry," Edward said as he squeezed my hand.

"It's not your fault," I said as I squeezed back, "Can we talk about something else?"

"Sure," Edward said, "What do you want to talk about?"

"Are you happy to be home?" I asked.

"Oh God yes," Edward replied, "The quiet is so nice. No beeping machines, no doctors in and out of the room, no people walking in the hall. Just me and my thoughts."

"Yeah the quiet is nice," I agreed, "but I find being alone with my thoughts more dangerous then I once did."

"I know what you mean," Edward said.

"Edward, what am I going to do?" I asked.

"About what?" he asked, confused.

"My dreams. They aren't getting better," I replied, "and I can't run over here and check on you every time I have one."

"No, but you can call me whenever you need to," Edward said.

"Are you still having dreams?" I asked.

"Yeah," Edward sighed, "I haven't had any more about you getting shot, but I have had some of me getting shot."

"Do you think we need to talk to someone about this?" I asked nervously, because I really didn't want to.

"Probably," Edward sounded as enthused as I felt about the idea.

"Do you think we are ever going to get past this?" I asked.

"I really hope so," Edward said.

"Me too," I replied.

"We just have to go slow," Edward said, "Take it day by day and hope it gets easier."

"I suppose," I said and hoped he was right.
