Chapter 6

Spencer couldn't have imagined any better way to spend his Friday night.

He'd never had much of a social life outside of work, really. He was used to spending his nights and weekends alone, embracing his own solitude and knowledge as his only companions. He couldn't recall the last time he had company over to his apartment, and certainly he'd never had anyone spend the night, much less a female guest. He was no Derek Morgan, and women were not regulars in his home. But, nonetheless, he laid strewn across his sofa, with quite possibly the most beautiful women he'd ever had the pleasure of knowing resting alongside him, her head of blonde waves pressed atop his chest. Every once in a while he'd find himself staring at her, simply to make sure that she was really there at all, and that he wasn't just stuck in some enchanting fantasy. Each time he convinced himself of her reality, he couldn't help but smile.

"What happens now?" Julie murmured softly, tracing shapes with her fingertip upon Spencer's chest.

He tightened the grip that his arm had claimed over her hip ever so slightly, perhaps to really convince himself yet another time that he truly was holding a woman. "What do you mean?"

"Well," Julie let out a little laugh, the slightest hint of nervousness hidden within it. "We kissed."

Spencer let out his breath and raised his eyebrows. He couldn't believe any of this was real. "Yeah, we did, didn't we?"

Julie broke into a laugh that he couldn't help but contribute to. He hadn't been this content in such a long time. Certainly not since losing Maeve. Maeve. This was the first time he was really able to reflect upon her without feeling a gaping emptiness within himself. He found the human brain and emotions utterly intriguing.

"But really, Spencer," Julie readjusted herself so that she was looking right up at him, and he snapped out of his thoughts at the sight of her eyes gazing into his. By now he was absolutely convinced that even if he spent every second of the remainder of his life with her by his side, he would never be able to get used to just how much he was fascinated by her eyes. "What do we do now?"

He thought for a moment, studying her features. "We just ride it out, I guess."

"'Ride it out'." Julie perked an eyebrow at him. "'Ride it out'? Spencer, you really just don't strike me as a 'ride it out' type guy. I'm sure you've already come up with some sort of plan."

Spencer sighed, reaching up to brush a lock of hair out of Julie's face and behind her ear. "Normally I'd agree with you, but I… I guess I really just didn't think any of this was actually going to happen." He said, a bit sheepishly. "I mean, when I pause to think about the whole situation, it does seem to be a bit outlandish."

"Outlandish?" Julie chuckled lightly, laying back down against Spencer's chest. "I suppose that's one way to describe it."

Spencer swallowed hard, beginning to think deeper about her question. "Julie, I… I like you, quite a bit."

Although he couldn't see her face, he knew she was smiling. "I would certainly hope so, Dr. Reid."

He went on. "And I, uh, I think that you…we…this…is worth pursuing."

Julie tilted her head to look up at him. He wet his lips before going on. "I haven't felt this degree of contentment in quite some time, and I owe it all to the past few days I've spent with you. I know we haven't known each other long at all, but if I've learned anything from working in the FBI it's to trust my instincts. And right now, my instincts are telling me that I've found something good – very, very good – and yes, I want to 'ride it out' as long as I can and see where it takes me. So, as long as that's all okay with you…"

The corner of Julie's lips eased into a trace of a smile. She tilted her head up to leave a soft kiss along his jawline. "If you're asking me if I want to be with you, the answer is that I wouldn't want to have it any other way." She laughed lightly. "I mean, I really haven't got anywhere else to go, anyway, so you're stuck with me regardless."

Spencer smiled down at her, just before he pulled her in to kiss her yet again.

It was just past 3 in the morning when Spencer's cell phone began to ring. He was used to waking up to phone calls at all hours of the night; what he wasn't used to was waking up with a woman snuggled into his side. It was a feeling that he'd have to get used to, but one that he certainly didn't mind.

Julie let out a slight moan at being awakened, and ran her hand over her eyes as Spencer fumbled to answer his phone. It was a quick call – one that he was far too accustomed to – and he jumped out of bed immediately after he hung up. Julie sat up, sleep still gripping her. She yawned. "Is everything alright?"

"Yes, everything's fine. I just have to go into to work. We've got a new case." He hurried around the room, attempting to get dressed in the dark.

"At 3 a.m.?" Julie yawned again.

Spencer laughed dryly. "Yeah, I've gotten used to it. I'm sorry for waking you."

"Don't worry about it. Where are you headed?" She asked.

"There's a child abduction in Tennessee. Nine year old boy never made it home last night." Spencer explained quickly. "Typically, we only have 24 hours to find the child alive, so it's rather urgent."

"How sad." Julie paused for a moment. "When will you be back?"

Spencer stopped rushing around for a moment, realizing how foreign this all was to Julie. He sat on the edge of the bed, studying her again. Even in the dead of night in the low lighting of his bedroom, she was able to entrance him. "I can't say. With a child abduction case, normally not as long as some of the others, but I can't be certain about anything. I'm sorry. I wish I knew."

Spencer always looked forward to new cases; perhaps because he was the youngest on the team and therefore the most willing to learn and experience, or perhaps because he truly didn't have anything else in his life to look forward to. Now, however, the latter statement was no longer true, and for the first time, Spencer felt himself not completely eager to go into work.

"It's alright, I understand." Julie smiled softly at him, resting her hand against the side of his face. He nuzzled against her touch. "That little boy needs you, just like I did. Go be his hero." She pressed her lips against his, and the second that he pulled away, he immediately missed her touch.

"You don't mind staying here by yourself while I'm away, do you?" Spencer asked, hesitantly.

Julie shook her head. "As long as it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me." She stretched. "I'm sure I can find something to keep me busy."

"I'll keep you as updated as I possibly can." Spencer kissed the top of her head.

"Please do." She sighed softly. "I'll miss you."

Spencer couldn't help but smile at her statement. How oddly wonderful it felt to be missed.
