Eremes knew that they were fighting a losing battle.
The mob was overwhelming. New doppelgangers respawned mere minutes after defeat, and many had freeze resistance. Kathryne's storm gust wouldn't be able to save them here. The whitesmith's Meltdown had broken nearly all of their weapons, and without any mana potions, soon, Retha and Kathryne would be rendered useless.
Any health potions that anyone in the party had previously possessed were now certainly depleted. The whitesmith simply had too much health, and even though they were making slow progress, none of them would survive long enough to see it through to the end.
Slowly, a suicidal idea began forming in his mind. As an assassin, the prospect of death had never been too far from his mind, and on the trip to Lighthalzen, he had found something – somebody – worth dying for. He nodded twice, grimly, committing himself to a path of action that he would not survive to regret.
He had been forced back, away from the whitesmith by his overwhelming mob of underlings. Now Eremes started forward once more, heedless of the damage he was taking from the myriad doppelgangers. Soon, he was face to face with the translucent MVP. Though the whitesmith's appearance was ghostly, his form was solid as ever. Grasping his mouth and prying it open, Eremes watched the whitesmith's enormous hammer rise high above their heads, glowing with an unearthly power. He slipped the contents of a small bottle – enchanted deadly poison – into the smith's mouth and felt the creature's limbs go limp.
Looking back at his companions through a haze of blurry vision, Eremes shakily started walking away from the whitesmith. Retha…Kathryne…Cecil…he hoped that they would all survive. It was too late for him now. He had lost too much health in his suicidal endeavor, and besides, there was one more factor involved and no time left to evade it.
Eremes knew that Retha would probably have wanted him to say a prayer, but then again, he had never placed too much faith in the Holy Church.
The hammer fell, bringing darkness along with it.
A/N: I know I keep calling them doppelgangers but they're not actually doppels! just your typical lhzdun3 monsters. Also, super short chapter, but I thought this was a nice place to break.
