I wake up suddenly in my chair. Tori is looking over me, with a mixture of horror and fear on her face.
"Hang on a sec, I've got to go do something."
After three minutes, she comes back looking alert and sweaty.
"What did I get?" I ask curiously.
"Well…you see, Elizabeth, the test didn't work you. The way the test is supposed to work is that it eliminates factions as it goes along. However, you always proved one thing and rebutted it the next. So your results were inconclusive."
"Wh-what do you mean? Is that even possible?"
"Yes, it is," Tori sighs. "It's just very, very rare. You see, the first scenario I put you in, you picked the cheese, which classifies you as Amity and rules out Dauntless. The scenario with the dog, however, you refused to give the dog the cheese, which wasn't very Amity of you. You used an Erudite way to deal with the dog. Killing the dog with a knife made you Dauntless. And giving the girl the block of cheese even though you really wanted it for yourself was an Abnegation orientated response."
I wince at the word Abnegation. How could I get an Abnegation trait?
"How though? How did you get the knife when you didn't pick it in the first place? It just appeared in your hand suddenly. You manipulated the simulation. How did you do that?"
"Well…" I say, fumbling for words. "I knew it wasn't real. I thought that if it was all in my head, I could make it however I wanted it to. So I imagined a knife in my hands, and, well, it was there." Looking at Tori's expression, I say, "It wasn't supposed to happen, was it?"
"No, it wasn't," Tori whispers. "You are the first person ever to manipulate the Aptitude test."
I am speechless.
"Going on, you lied to the man in the bus, therefore ruling out Candor. You used a very Erudite-smart way to talk to the man, but knowing that he was factionless and lying was both Erudite and Candor."
"So what does that mean?"
"That means… you are divergent."
"Divergent?" I whisper.
"Yes, divergent. You got all five factions for your result. You are dangerous; uncontrollable. People, mainly the Erudite and Dauntless, would do anything to kill you. You, in particular, are the first person ever to get all five factions as a result. The highest record so far was three."
"H-how is that even possible?" I choke.
"It's not supposed to be. But it is," Tori says with her eyes glued to the floor. "Now, listen to me. You must not tell anybody, even your family, about your result. Your divergence is extremely dangerous and one word you let slip could be fatal to your life and your family's life, too. Do you understand?"
"Yes. But what will you put as my result?"
"Well, you can choose," Tori says, smiling slightly. "You do have five factions to choose from, after all."
"Please put me as…" I think of the Dauntless, cheering as they urge me to be brave. "Dauntless. Put me as Dauntless."
"Sure," Tori nods. "Now go quietly, and remember, don't tell anybody about your result."
