"Today you will be fighting each other," Four says. "You will use the fighting techniques that I have taught you yesterday. A fight ends when," he breaks off to cough, "One of you is unable to fight any longer. In other words, one of you will have to be unconscious for a fight to end."
Gasps fill the air.
"B-but that's just cruel!" Sabina the Erudite exclaims. "Yes, sure we learned how to defend ourselves yesterday, but that's defence, you don't just use fighting just for pleasure or attacking without a purpose. That's injuring people for no reason!"
"Did you thinking Dauntless would be Amity when you came here?" It's Eric. Uh oh. So he's seeing today's training, huh? Probably thirsty to see some violence.
"N-no –"
"Well then, did you think Dauntless initiation would be a comfortable paradise?"
"What has hurting each other got to do with bravery?" Sabina challenges.
Eric looks like he's about to snap, when Four saves Sabina.
"Enough of your bickering. The sooner we start the fights, the more time you'd get to heal by tomorrow for the second round of fights. Here are the people you will be fighting against."
He holds up a board which shows up the names:
Ian vs Sabina
Maddy vs Colin (I don't know Colin, but I think Maddy has the chance to beat him, she's pretty strong)
Xavier vs Maya (Honestly I think Xavier will win. Maya looks tough but Xavier's even tougher.)
Rose vs Tyler (Oh no, I don't think Rose can stand a chance against that 100-kilogrammed muscular dude…)
Amelia vs Alyssa (I feel sorry for them. How would you feel fighting your best friend?
Liz vs Ella (Seriously? They put me up against someone like Ella? Did they think I was weak or something?
And Ryan is sitting out. I guess Four and Six didn't want him to get hurt. I roll my eyes.
"First up, Ian and Sabina! Into the ring!"
"Good luck," I whisper to Sabina as she makes her way unsteadily towards the fighting ring.
Ian makes his first punch, straight to the jaw. Sabina blocks it. Ian then tries to kick her stomach, but she grabs his foot and pushes backwards. It doesn't do him any harm other than stumbling back. Ian looks at Sabina, expecting her to make an attack but she doesn't do anything.
"Hurry up, we don't have all day," Eric yawns. I glare at him. How can he take this so casually?
Ian punches Sabina, and as Sabina is busy blocking the punch Ian manages to successfully knee her in the stomach. Sabina's eyes narrow. For the next five minutes, Ian tries all sorts of attacks but they are all blocked. Sabina is better than I thought she is.
"Make a move yourself, Sabina," Six suggests. But Sabina shakes her head. I don't blame her.
"Why? You too cowardly?" Ian sniggers. Sabina stays silent and glares at Ian. They stare at each other for the next few seconds, and Ian quickly punches Sabina, trying to catch her by surprise, but it doesn't work.
"This is going nowhere," Four says. "Sabina, you either attack now, or you lose. You can choose."
"I thought this was self-defence, not attack," Sabina scowls. As she looks at Four, Ian takes this opportunity to get to Sabina. He succeeds, and soon Sabina is on the floor and Ian is kicking her everywhere. Sabina lies of the floor, still.
"Fight over. Ian wi –"
Like lightning, Sabina gets up from the floor and pushes Ian to the ground, kicking him in the head, making him go unconscious.
"You were awake?" says Six, dumbfounded. But Sabina never responds. She also lies still.
"Uh… it's a draw. Someone please take them both to the infirmary."
Six takes Sabina, and no one offers to take Ian, so Four is forced to do it. Oh no. Leaving Eric with is probably not a good choice…
"Maddy and Colin, hurry up, we haven't got all day!" Eric snaps. What a pleasant person.
Maddy and Colin go up.
The fight ends in about two minutes, with Maddy being the victor, but it was close. They are both bruised and bloody, but Colin woke up a minute after being knocked out, and his injuries weren't that bad to go to the infirmary.
Xavier beat Maya in under a minute, but that was expected anyway, seeing as Xavier is strong but Maya is weak, much like Ella.
Rose and Tyler's fight is up next. I have butterflies in my stomach. I fear the worst for Rose. What will Tyler do to her?
"Going to cry?" Tyler sneers. "I might go easy on you if you cry."
"Yeah, I totally believe that," says Rose.
Without Eric calling 'start', Tyler starts punching Rose in the nose, hard. It breaks and blood gushes out everywhere. Rose's eyes narrows. No one messes with her beautiful face. She kicks him hard at his private part, and everyone gasps. That is not a common area to kick. Tyler wheezes in pain, and Rose continues kicking him. Tyler gets his revenge and kicks Rose hard in the stomach, and then punches her throat, making her unable to breathe. He then grabs her arms and flips her backwards, making her fall on the ground. He kicks her ribs, then her side, then her ribs again. He keeps on kicking until I'm sure every single one of her ribs have broken. Her clothes is now seeped with blood, and I'm surprised she's not dead yet.
Please go unconscious. Please go unconscious. But no, Rose is far from being unconscious, nor does she look like she's going to pretend to look unconscious. Why can't Tyler kick her head and be done with it?
Rose is almost half dead, I'm sure. As Tyler kicks her again, she finally wheezes, "Stop! Please! I've had enough!"
"What did you say?" Eric says in a menacing voice.
"I've had enough."
She can talk, even with her broken ribs! I am proud of her.
"No one ever concedes here in Dauntless. That is an act of cowardice."
"No it isn't!" Xavier says. "Acknowledging another person's strength is a sign of bravery."
"Says who?" Eric says. "Get up, Rose. Everyone, follow me."
I help Rose up and aid her to walk. She doesn't have any damage to her limbs, so it's fine. But she's still half slumping on me.
"Can't you see Rose is half unconscious?" I say angrily.
"No," Eric says coldly. "I don't see. She's alive. And she's a coward."
He leads us to the chasm. Uh oh. I think I know what's about to happen.
I am hoping that Four and Six will come by soon to stop this.
"Hang from that rail," Eric commands. "Hang there for five minutes. If you do and survive, I'll forget your cowardice. If you don't, you die. Or you can give up now, and live factionless. It's your choice."
Whimpering, Rose lowers herself down and hangs by the chasm. My breath hitches. Hanging is causing fatal stress to her ribs, and the fact that they are already broken makes it even worse.
"Her ribs are broken!" I say angrily. "Doing this will kill her! Is this bravery?"
"It will kill her? Let's see it happening first before we assume things," Eric says calmly, smirking.
I cannot believe this man can be so cruel. My attention turns to Rose, who is hanging off the rail, tears forming in her eyes.
A wave crashes across the rocks, splashing water up onto her, touching her wounds. She screams. Why has Eric chosen this spot for her?
The rail becomes wet, and she is slowly slipping off. My heart is thudding a million times a second. It's only been two minutes, what if she can't make it?
Another wave splashes onto her, and she screams again. If the water seeps in to her wounds, it might get infected. Or, if someone had thrown wine down there, it might help – wait, what? Is this even true? I curse myself for not paying attention in medical classes.
Three minutes has past. Rose is screaming, hanging on with one hand and two fingers, as more and more waves come crashing up her back.
"You can do it, Rosie!" I cheer. "Only two more minutes left. I know you can do it. Just hang in there."
Rose takes it in and slowly her other hand starts coming back on again. But just then, another wave comes crashing up and she loses her grip again.
I clench my fists as I think of Four and Six. What is taking them so long just to dump two people in the infirmary? It's been almost half an hour already, and they still haven't come. They must be taking a tea break or something, whilst all this is happening. My mind is blank with anger. I am really going to give it to them later.
"One more minute left!" I say comfortingly. Rose's fingers are now white: she is only hanging on with three fingers. How she manages to do this I'm not sure, but I admire her guts.
A wave crashes up, stronger than ever. It engulfs Rose's legs, and she almost gets dragged in. I with her.
"Fight the wave!" Maddy screams. "You can do this! Don't let your life end because of Eric! Come on, show him that you are strong!"
Eric looks like he's about to push Maddy into the chasm, too.
In the last ten seconds, everything bad happens. A wave crashes up, wetting Rose's torso. Rose screams, and hangs on with one finger. I look at Eric's watch. Two seconds left. Rose's grip is falling. Eric's watch beeps. Just then, another wave crashes up, and she surrenders into the wave. I grit my teeth. I can do this.
I plunge myself at Rose, one hand grabbing onto her hand and the other hand gripping the rail. Rose isn't that heavy, but I am overwhelmed as I try to pull her up. How did Rose manage to do this? With broken ribs as well?
"What do you think you're doing?" Eric bellows.
"Time was up ages ago! I saved her because she dropped after the time is up. She's still in. She's brave. Like you said. Because hanging on to a rail whilst half dead is totally brave."
With all my strength, I pull Rose up, and Xavier, with his super strength, pulls Rose up to the ground, where she collapses into him. Maddy pulls me up out of the chasm.
Eric looks bored at all of this.
"Fine. Rose, you're still in. Points for bravery. I guess it's lunch break, everyone."
