Amelia's and Alyssa's fight was actually very close. They're about the same size and strength, so it would be pretty hard to find one who you would say is going to win.

They were trying not to hurt each other, throwing clumsy punches and kicks at each other, and not looking each other in the eye. I try to catch Six's attention and tell her to make it a draw, but she doesn't look at me. She looks bored. I don't blame her.

It ended up as Alyssa winning, because Amelia sort of surrendered in a way, because she couldn't stand the thought of hurting Alyssa, so Alyssa just pushed her to the ground and kicked her head gently, and Amelia pretended to be unconscious. Of course Four and Six knew she wasn't, but since Eric isn't here, Four marked Alyssa as the victor straight away.

It's my turn to fight. I don't feel nervous. Why would I feel nervous being up against someone like Ella? Well, I am a bit nervous, because I don't want to hurt her. Or do I have to use that Blake method again? I shudder.

I step into the ring, and Ella looks vulnerable, like she knows she's going to lose anyway.

"Start fighting," says Six.

I make the first punch, straight to her face. She ducks, and at the same time I knee her in the stomach. She stumbles backwards, and I kick her again, making her crumple to the ground. She tries to punch me as I stand over her. I dodge it easily and I press my foot to her, holding her down. I am about to kick her, but suddenly she stands up, making me stumble. She kicks me hard, making me double over, and then she punches me in the jaw. She's stronger than I thought. Through the lights in my eyes, I see her arms bulging with muscle. How did she get them? I thought she was weak. Angry at how she pretended to be weak all along, I punch her hard in the jaw, then as she tries to kick me again, I grab her foot and yank her forwards, making her lose her balance and fall to the ground. I kick her head, making her unconscious.

"Liz wins," Four says in a bored voice. "Training's over. Tomorrow we will have fights again, like today. If the losers for this round are not able to fight tomorrow, they will be cut. Goodbye."

Everyone leaves, and I am left to haul Ella to the infirmary myself. I lift her up, but I am still in pain, and not to mention she is heavier than I thought.

"Let me help you," says a voice behind me.

"Xavier? I thought you left," I laugh with gratitude.

"Why would I leave you? You look too dopey to remember the way to the infirmary," he grins.

"Oh, shut up."

Together we carry Ella to the infirmary. We have to pass the chasm on the way, I stiffen as I remember Rose clinging on for dear life.

"I still can't believe how you had the guts to jump in after Rose," Xavier says.

"It was like my instinct, if you know what I mean," I shrug.

"Geez, you're almost like a Stiff now," Xavier jokes.

"Ha ha," I say, but I don't find it funny. What if he realises I'm Divergent?

"You must know Tyler pretty well," I say to Xavier, changing the subject.

"Yeah," he says darkly. "He always caused trouble in Erudite. He would pick fights on Stiffs, and they can't complain or defend themselves. Then he would steal things from them."

"Well, he seems like a person I'd like to have for a boyfriend," I say sarcastically. I look down at Ella. "What's with the Ella-Tyler relationship?"

"I don't know. Some say Tyler put her under a simulation, but it seems like Ella's just too jelly-minded. She does everything for Tyler like she's his slave, but at the same time they keep kissing."

"I can see." I remember Ella's muscles, yet she refuses to use them. Did Tyler tell her to lose every fight but one so she could stay in but at the same time rank last so she wouldn't beat Tyler? Is she stronger than him?

We're at the infirmary now. A woman named Marlene smiles at us and takes Ella and puts her on a bed. We don't leave, though. We go over to Rose's bed, where Hector is standing, looking at her with anxiety and care. Rose looks horrible. There is a piece of cloth wrapped around her torso, and is spotted with blood. Rose's nose is still broken. But she looks peacefully sleeping, though.

"Hey Hector," the two of us say.

"Oh, you know Hecky?" Marlene says. Hector rolls his eyes at this nickname.

"Yeah?"

"Oh, he's my best friend Lynn's brother. Your trainers must be Four and Six, right? Well Four is my boyfriend's brother's best friend. Six is my friend too, and she's Four's wife," Marlene babbles on.

"That's nice to know," I say, rolling my eyes, and thankfully Marlene leaves.

"Hey guys," Hec says. Care to explain how Rose is like this?"

"Um…" Xavier and I look at each other, and then we launch painfully into the story.

Hector pales. "I never knew Eric was that bad. My two sisters always hated him, especially Shauna, Eric always picked on her. They were in the same initiation class. At that time the Dauntless borns and transfers were mixed, 'cause there were so little transfers."

"And I'm assuming initiation wasn't half as cruel then?" I say.

"Yeah. You could concede in fights, and there were unlimited amount of spots available so competition wasn't as large. Sometimes I wish I was Shauna, even though her best friend is Four."

"I never imagined Four having friends," I say. "Well, before I knew about Six and Christina, anyway."

"Yeah, I know what you mean," Hector grins. "But you know, if you're close friends with Four, he's not that bad. He's just the keeping to himself type, and only some people, not necessarily only his friends, can break his tough shell."

I wonder if I'm the type of person who can break his shell.

Just then, Maddy comes running in. "Geez, people. I had to dash to the dining hall and wait forever in this massive queue just to get afternoon tea for you guys! You'd better be grateful I exist!"

"There was afternoon tea?" says Xavier.

Maddy throws him a dirty glare, then hands out slices of cake.

"Dauntless cake!" says Hector happily, and digs in straight away. I follow after him, and taste in my mouth the most delicious thing I have ever tasted in my life. The cream melts in my mouth. Mmm.

Just as I finish my last mouthful, I hear a moan. Rose is stirring. After a while she opens her eyes, and with difficulty, sits up.

"W-where am I?" she croaks.

"You're in the infirmary," Maddy says. "Do you remember Eric making you ha –"

"Shut up," says Hector sharply. "Do you feel better, Rosie?"

"Better than before, but my ribs still hurt every time I breathe."

"Not much we can do about that, then," I say with a slight laugh.

Rose shrugs, then grimaces painfully.

"So, what made you wake up at this point in time? Did you have a hunch or something that you were missing out on something?" Maddy smirks. Hector elbows her.

"What?" says Rose, oblivious. Then she sees my remains of Dauntless cake. I inwardly kick myself. She narrows her eyes, then says, "Yeah, yeah, I did. I knew I was missing out on something."

"Uh, yeah, sorry about that," Maddy says sheepishly.

"Forgot I exist?" Rose says, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah, she did," I say grinning, ignoring Maddy's dirty glare.

"OK, that's enough time for you visitors, Rose needs her rest, now OUT," Marlene says firmly.

"Hey, I had like 3 hours of sleep already!" Rose protests. "And I'm getting better!"

"OUT!" says Marlene.

"I can stay, can't I?" Hector pleads, looking at Marlene with his cute puppy dog eyes.

Grumbling, Marlene says, "Fine, because and only because you are my best friend's little brother."

"NO FAIR!" the rest of us scream, but we are ushered out.

"You know, I'm starting to think Hec has a crush on Rose," Xavier jokes.

"And how are you supposed to know?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Past Erudite, ning nong. I know the signs."

"Oh, so you had a crush before?" I smirk, but suddenly feeling emotionless.

"No, but my friend did once, and it was so obvious, even for me. Ya know, the way people stare at girls, with their eyes all shiny and wide… just like Hector."

We all laugh.

"Rose better be ok by tomorrow or else she'll get cut," I say worriedly.

"Four's probably just joking," Xavier says. "Or else he'd be just plain cruel."

"Oh, knowing Dauntless, I'm not so sure," I say. "And what about the field trip? Rose can't miss that too…"

"She won't."

"Where is it to?" Maddy asks.

"Oh, I don't know, probably some place where we all have to battle three-headed monsters that breathe green fire," Xavier says sarcastically.

"Probably," I say seriously. "I'm starting to doubt Dauntless's intelligence right now, actually."

"Well I'm starting to doubt your Dauntless," Maddy says, raising an eyebrow.

"Hey, Liz is Dauntless!" Xavier argues. "She's coming first in initiation right now, you know."

"I am?" I say, and suddenly a big weight lifts off my shoulders. Maybe I won't be such a complete failure after all…

"You're not and never was," Xavier whispers to me sternly. I stop breathing. How did he read my mind?

"What's with the look, Liz?" Maddy asks.

"You'd have that look on your face too if you suddenly realised your friend was telepathic and has been invading your mind," I snap but light-heartedly.

"I'm not telepathic!" Xavier protests. "I just know what you're thinking."

"Same thing, Erudite."

"I'm not an Erudite anymore, Amity!"

"I'm not an Amity anymore, Nose!"

"I'm not a –"

"Wow, another sign of flirting: bickering," Maddy smirks.

"HEY!"
