Chapter 2: Roll Over Gabby

Xena knelt next to the small creek, not far from the camp fire where Gabrielle slept quietly. The unsettling thought of placing Gabrielle in danger made her more restless and anger than she ever wanted to be. Xena was so engrossed with her thoughts that she hardly heard the leaves rustling back by the campfire. Xena sprang to her feet and quickly pushed the branches out of her way to clear her vision. Gabrielle was gone.

"Gabrielle?" Xena called placing her hand on her chakram. Removing her weapon from her belt, the silence of the forest made Xena's sense heightened.

"Gabrielle?" Xena called again, but still no answer. Xena could feel the wind moving softly across her hands. The night air was cold and cruel, winter was coming. Xena heard the wind rustle the leaves below her feet and she stepped carefully to not make a sound. Xena didn't like the feel of this. Gabrielle should have screamed by now, unless she isn't able to.

Xena froze when she felt an all to familiar feeling hanging above her head in the tree above. Someone was up there, ready to drop down for their attack. Xena gripped her chakram and was ready to release and strike her mystery attacker dead. However, she hesitated, when another familiar presence overwhelmed her, it was Gabrielle hanging above.

Before Xena could look up, the mass began to fall to the ground and Xena stepped aside in order to catch her. Gabrielle feel with a smile and a laugh.

"I had you going there, didn't I. You really thought someone had taken me and that you were about to be under attack."

Xena, in her slight anger, dropped Gabrielle to the ground and stepped over her body.

"I knew it was you all along. I just played along for your sake." Xena said smirking to herself so that Gabrielle couldn't see. In this moment Xena accepted that the journey she and Gabrielle were to embark no evil in the world, including herself, could change Gabrielle from who she was. She was a good heart and always would be.
