Chapter Six
Finally after they both calmed down, they had eaten a quick dinner and went to bed, both exhausted by the day's events. Well, Beth slept, but Daryl could not fall asleep to save his life. He had so much going on in his head. Would Beth survive this, keeping Beth even safer than before, making sure she was always healthy, getting things for when their child would be born, when would the baby be born. The first time he even thought the word "baby," it stunned him for a few moments. As if thinking the word made it all the more real, he would have a baby boy or girl, calling him daddy. Everything was so overwhelming. He kept glancing down at Beth, with her head on his bare chest, she is so beautiful. His eyes drifted down to her abdomen, where their baby was growing, even though her stomach was still perfectly flat.
He must have drifted off eventually, because suddenly he bolted awake when the bathroom door slammed shut, he sat up and looked over at the clock,
"Five thirty in the damn morning he mumbled."
Then he realized why he had been awoken, Beth was no longer in bed with him, but in the bathroom. He got up to go open the bathroom door, but before he could open it Beth called out,
"Do not come in here!" She then proceeded to throw up the small dinner she had eaten the night before. Daryl couldn't stand to just sit outside the door helpless, so he swung the door open and walked in. Beth fixed him with a glare, but before she could say anything, she was praying to the porcelain throne again.
Daryl moved behind her, pulled her hair back, and started rubbing circle on her back. Beth finally seemed to have nothing left in her, so she sat back against the tub, enjoying the cool feeling of the porcelain.
"You shouldn't have come in here. Ya didn't need to see that."
"It's okay."
"What time is it?"
"Five thirty."
"Damn you."
He stared at her confused, what had he done, well besides the obvious of getting her pregnant,
"What the hell did I do?"
"Your little archer spawn has your sleep patterns. Up before the freakin' sun."
He stared at her kind of funny, Beth asked,
"What's that look for?"
"Archer spawn?" He drawled out.
"Yes. Little archer like you, shooting arrows at my stomach at the crack of dawn."
He cracked a small grin at that before saying,
"I ain't no expert or nothing, but isn't it just like a little bundle of cells right now?"
Beth thought on it for a moment, "I don't really know. Guess we could ask Rick or Abraham, or find a pregnancy book somewhere."
"Mkay. I'm sorry you're having to go through this…kinda my fault you're up at the crack of Satan's ass, pukin' your guts out."
"It ain't all your fault Daryl. It's like that sayin', takes two to tango."
He thought on what she said for a few minutes before askin',
"You okay now?"
"I think so. Don't have anythin' left in me."
"Wanna go lay back down?"
She nodded her head yes, when she stood up, she was wobbly on her legs, and almost fell over. Daryl grabbed her arm just in time, he was worried, should be this week? He knew nothing about pregnancies, or pregnant women, he was so far out of his comfort zone with this entire situation.
When he got her back to bed, she wanted him to lay back down with her, but once Daryl was up, he was up. He asked her if she wanted anything to eat, and she looked at him like he'd grown another head. So he just went downstairs, and outside to the shed. The shed was his thinking place, he came out here to build things, sharpen his arrows, or just sit and think on things. He sat there sharpening his arrows thinking about everything they were gonna have to get and do over the next few months. They'd have to go on extra runs to find stuff for the baby and Beth. He had no idea what either of them would need, except the basics, like a crib, diapers, and clothes, but he was lost with everything else.
Daryl didn't realize how long he had been out in the shed, till he looked outside and the sun was shining brightly. It couldn't be past eight; he went back inside, but Beth still wasn't up yet. Normally Daryl wasn't a big breakfast person, but he had hardly eaten yesterday. Most would assume Daryl couldn't cook, but he had basically raised himself, he could cook a few things.
He decided to make some eggs for him and Beth, if there was one thing he knew about women being pregnant was that they needed to eat.
However, when Beth woke up and came downstairs, as soon as she smelt the eggs, she bolted from the kitchen to the bathroom.
"Again?" Daryl mumbled to himself, but before he could give chase after her, there was a knocking at the front door,
"What now" he grumbled.
He opened the door to find Maggie on the other side, before he could say anything she walked right past him into the house,
"Well mornin' to you too," he muttered.
"Where is she? Did you kill her?"
"In the bathroom. And why would I kill her?" he growled back at Maggie.
Maggie just fixed him with a look and went to find Beth. Daryl was beyond confused, did Beth really think he was going to react that badly? To be fair, he was fairly pissed, but it wasn't directed towards her, well, he didn't mean for it to be. He was gonna go after Maggie, but decided maybe it'd be better if he let her go check on Beth. Maggie's girl, so she probably knew how to help Beth better than he did.
When the bathroom door flung open, Beth had expected Daryl to walk in, but was only slightly surprised to see Maggie,
"What are you doin here?"
"Came to see how Robin Hood out there handled the news…and to see if there was any carnage."
Did Beth seriously freak Maggie out that much about how Daryl would react?
"Well, right now the only carnage would be my stomach. As for his reaction, initially he walked out, but he came back, and lets just say it's all okay right now."
Maggie didn't look a hundred percent convinced by what Beth said, but didn't feel like pushing her right now, considering she was still hugging the toilet.
"How long have you been throwing up?"
"First time was at five-thirty this morning, when the archer spawn decided throwing up was better than sleep. Came downstairs a few minutes ago, Daryl was cooking, and the little one decided I hadn't puked enough earlier."
Maggie cocked her head to the side,
"Archer spawn?"
Beth smiled a little, "It's not like we're gonna know if it's a boy or girl, and I don't wanna call my child an it, so I decided on archer spawn."
Maggie nodded,
"I guess I get that," then she reached into her bag and pulled out a couple bottles,
"Here…um…Glenn and I got them the last time we went on a run."
Beth looked at Maggie, she had so many questions, and this time she needed answers.
"Maggie…why were you and Glenn looking for prenatal vitamins, nausea medicine, and pregnancy tests?"
Maggie sighed, she knew this was coming, but kind of hoped to avoid this conversation,
"Because…a couple of weeks ago we thought I might be…you know…so when we went to that pharmacy on the run, we grabbed like twenty pregnancy tests, and got all the prenatal vitamins they had…but turns out I'm not…so I'm givin' them to you."
Beth looked up at Maggie with a sad, but appreciative smile,
"You could have told me, ya know? But thank you, for these."
Maggie gave her a watery smile, "I know, but Glenn and I just wanted to keep it between us for awhile. And you're welcome. Could you just tell Daryl we found them, and not why we got them?"
"Of course."
"You feel better now?"
"Yeah, I don't think I could possibly throw up again."
Beth got up to rinse her mouth out before she would walk out with Maggie.
Daryl had been pacing back and forth from the hallway to the kitchen for the last fifteen minutes waiting for Beth and Maggie to come out. He was starting to worry that something was wrong, and if they didn't come out soon he was gonna take the door down. Just as was about to go knock on the door, Maggie called out,
"If you don't want puking round three, get rid of those eggs Robin Hood."
Daryl growled in response to Maggie's favorite nickname to call him, but did as she said. A few minutes later they walked out of the bathroom, and Daryl was at Beth's side in an instance,
"You okay?"
Daryl looked incredibly worried about Beth, she just smiled at him as she walked to sit down at the breakfast bar,
"I'm fine, just morning sickness, it's all part of the process."
Daryl mumbled in response,
"Don't really know anything about this kinda stuff…never really dealt with it before…"
Maggie piped in at that, "This should help give you both a better understanding of everything," Maggie said as she pulled out a pregnancy book. Daryl looked at Maggie with all kinds of questions, but Beth gave him a look that said they'd discuss it later.
"Thank you Mags."
"I…uh…already looked through it some, and based on everything you've told me, I'd say you're probably about eight weeks. So you're 3/4s of the way through the first trimester."
"Good to know," Beth said as she started flipping through the pages. Wow, some of this will be interesting to watch Daryl look at. That is one detailed diagram. Beth knew Daryl would probably not look at it by choice, but she would inform him of the important details.
"Alright, well I'm gonna go now. Come get me if you need me Bethy." Maggie gave her a quick hug and was gone.
Beth had been engrossed in the pregnancy book for the rest of the day, trying to learn as much as possible, so she wouldn't be getting any surprises.
Daryl just kept glancing over at Beth, she had been reading that damn book all day, and he knew she'd be trying to get him to read it next. He knew that pregnancies lasted nine months that it involved puking, lots of hormones, and giving birth was painful, but that's all he knew.
"You should really read this Daryl, it has a lot of good stuff in it."
"Uh huh," Daryl muttered.
"Oh come on Daryl, don't you wanna know what's goin' on with your little archer spawn?" She looked up at him with those big puppy eyes.
He knew she wouldn't stop bugging him till he said yes,
"Fine…I'll look at it…eventually."
For that he was rewarded with one of her big smiles, and a long sweet kiss.
Beth yawned as they separated,
"I'm exhausted and I haven't done anythin' all day, and apparently exhaustion gets worse the further into it I get."
"Great…" Daryl grumbled.
Beth grinned at his reaction,
"I'm gonna go to sleep now, you comin'?"
"I'll be up there in a few minutes."
She bent over and kissed him one more time before heading upstairs. Daryl sat downstairs for another ten minutes, looking at the book laying on the coffee table. He debated picking it up and flipping through it, but decided to wait another day to look at it.
When he got upstairs, Beth was already sound asleep. He smiled at her beautiful sleeping form, he stripped down to his boxers and crawled in bed. Before he laid down, he shimmied down on the bed a little, till his face was level with Beth's abdomen. He pressed his forehead against her stomach, before softly kissing it,
"Goodnight Arrow," he whispered.
With that Daryl pulled Beth up against him and wrapped his arm around her protectively, and fell into a deep sleep.
