Thank you to so much to everyone who has followed, favorited, or reviewed this story, it means so much to me. Since the last chapters have been a little dramatic, this one is basically pure fluff. It's a little shorter than normal, but I wanted to get y'all another chapter sooner. Hope y'all enjoy!
I don't own shit, but a shit ton of homework that I am ignoring.
Chapter Fourteen
That night, Beth could not sleep at all, the day's events constantly replaying in her head. She could have lost the baby, she could have been killed. Daryl and Carl could have been killed. If Daryl wasn't so good at handling the walkers, and thinking quick on his feet, then things could have been a lot worse for them. She had been staring up at the ceiling for hours now, Daryl had been asleep for awhile, lightly snoring. He had passed out from exhaustion, he'd done so much throughout the day. Beth knew he was worried, if they way he stared at her all night was anything to go by, the next few months he would constantly be worrying.
She sighed and rolled over in frustration, maybe she shouldn't have napped so long earlier.
Daryl awoke when he heard Beth huff,
"What's wrong?" he groggily mumbled.
She rolled back over to face him,
"I can't sleep…keep thinkin' about everythin' that happened today…I…I could've lost y'all…" she trailed off, tears suddenly forming in her eyes.
Daryl was up in an instant, pulling Beth into his arms.
"Shh…shh…it's okay. I'm okay, you're okay, Carl's okay, and bubba's okay…you didn't lose us."
"But I could have," she choked out between sobs.
Daryl hated this, he hated seeing her cry. He knew part of it was the hormones that everyone kept telling him about, but part of it was the genuine fear she had. The fear that everyone in this world now had. Their world was a constant fight for survival, not only fighting the dead, but the living as well.
He just let her cry for a few minutes, rubbing circles on her back, waiting for her to calm some, before trying to talk to her,
"Look…I know what happened today was scary, but we made it through. We always do. I will be here for you, always…I know I'm shit with words, but I'm tryin' here. I'm gonna be protecting you and bubba for the rest of my life, and the rest of our family…so stop cryin' and worryin' for now."
Beth had stopped sobbing, and was mainly sniffling. Daryl was being so sweet, and trying so hard for her. She knew he wouldn't voice all his worries with her, but she knew he'd try his best to ease hers.
"You really think everythin' will be alright?"
"Mhmm," he hummed in response.
She laid her head down on his chest and tried to go to sleep, feeling better now that she had talked with Daryl. She fell asleep to the sound of his heart beating, and him rubbing her back. However, Daryl couldn't go to sleep now, wide awake, wondering if this pregnancy would get any easier the longer it went on, but knowing it would only get more challenging.
Beth awoke alone in bed, an hour or so after sunrise. She wasn't surprised that Daryl was already awake, he rarely slept in. Sitting up and stretching, she decided to take a quick shower before going to look for Daryl.
She walked into the bathroom and quickly stripped out of Daryl's t-shirt and her underwear, before stepping in the shower. The warm water felt like heaven, cascading down her back. She was a little sore from running yesterday, the warm water helped to ease the pain away. After a few minutes, she began to sing one of her favorite songs,
After she finished singing, Beth turned off the water. What she wasn't expecting, was Daryl standing in the bathroom doorway,
"Daryl, oh my gosh. You scared me."
"Sorry, heard the water turn on, then I heard you singin', but I didn't know what you were singin,'" he said, while giving her an apologetic look.
"It's okay. It's just a song I used to listen to. It's in Spanish."
He nodded his head at her,
"I'll let you get dressed, I'll be downstairs."
Beth quickly dried off, and brushed out her hair. She was so thankful to be able to take care of her hair again, it looked and felt so much better. She threw on some jeans, and one Daryl's flannel shirts, and headed downstairs. Rick would probably be by soon with Judith, so wanted to go ahead and eat before they got there.
Daryl looked up when Beth walked into the kitchen, and smirked a little,
"Is that my shirt?"
Beth's cheeks flushed slightly at being caught, she didn't think he'd notice,
"Maybe" she drawled out.
"What happened to all them clothes I got ya?"
"I'm gonna wear them…they just don't smell like you," she smiled at him.
He rolled his eyes at her, but thought it was cute. She looked much better in the shirt than he did.
"I'm starving, think I'm gonna make some pancakes…oh and eggs!"
Daryl looked at Beth kinda funny, he was gonna ask her if she was over doing it, but then thought twice before opening his mouth. Rick and Abraham had warned him to never question pregnant women when it came to food, if he valued his life.
"Sounds good. You got Lil Ass Kicker today?"
"Yup, all day with my favorite little girl. And I swear to God Daryl Dixon, you better not give our child a nickname like that," Beth told him with as stern a look as she could muster.
Daryl grinned at that,
"Hmmmm we'll see."
Beth just rolled her eyes at him and set about cooking up breakfast. In thirty minutes she had a large plate of pancakes made and another plate full of eggs. They both dug in, Beth making small moans of pleasure over her cooking. Daryl enjoyed her cooking, but her moans were driving him crazy. He was gonna drag her up the stairs if she didn't stop soon, but he knew he couldn't, Rick would be at the front door any minute with Judith.
"What are you doing today?"
Daryl swallowed the bite of pancake he was chewing on before answering her,
"Gonna help Rick out. Work on reinforcing the walls some more…hopefully since we're about to be in the middle of winter, we won't have too many walkers around."
Beth smiled slightly, she enjoyed winter, always hoping for a white Christmas,
"Ya think it'll snow?"
Daryl shrugged his shoulders,
"I don't know. Never been a big fan of the snow."
Beth laughed lightly at that,
"I've always wanted a white Christmas, but that kinda thing don't really happen in Georgia."
"Nope. Snow ain't a big thing in the south."
Beth was gonna say somethin' else, but someone started knocking on the door,
"I'll get it," Daryl told her, standing up and heading to the door.
He opened the door, not surprised to see Rick standing with Judith smiling happily in his arms. She smiled at Daryl and waved her little hands at him,
"Good morning Lil' Ass Kicker, Rick."
"Mornin' Daryl."
Daryl led them into the kitchen, and as soon as Judith saw Beth she began squealing happily, reaching for her,
"Good morning baby girl, morning Rick," Beth said taking her from Rick.
"Good mornin' Beth, what you girls gonna get into today?"
"I don't know yet, but I'll think of somethin' for us to get into."
Rick smiled at Beth and Judith, his little girl loved spending time for Beth. He wished Lori could be here to see their little girl grow up, and watch Carl turn into a great, young man.
"You ready to head out Daryl?"
"Mhmm," Daryl replied to him.
"I'll wait out front for ya," Rick quickly kissed Judith on the head before walking out.
"Be careful out there," Beth told Daryl.
"Always am," he said before quickly kissing her, and ruffling Judith's hair.
"If ya need me, or anything, come get me, okay?"
"I will. We'll see you boys later."
Beth walked him to the front porch, and stood out front with Judith as Daryl and Rick walked away,
"Wave bye Judy, wave bye to Daddy and Daryl."
Judith simply giggled and sort of waved her hand at Rick and Daryl, who had turned around and laughed at Beth trying to get Judith to wave. Once they were out of sight, Beth walked back inside with Judith, not wanting her to catch a cold.
"Alright Ms. Judy, lets see what we can get into today."
Daryl and Rick walked along the outside of the wall, taking care of any walkers that had impaled themselves on the stakes surrounding their walls. They worked in silence for a little while, each focusing on their own thoughts. Daryl worrying about Beth and the baby, while Rick was wondering when someone would come and try to disturb the peace they had found.
"Carl talked about his buck all night, wants me to mount his antlers on his bedroom wall. Right above his bed," Rick told Daryl.
Daryl smiled slightly at that, glad Carl was so excited about hunting,
"He did pretty good skinning it, for his first try."
"I don't think he'll ever stop talking about it."
"Did he tell you he almost puked?"
Rick began to laugh at that,
"Are you serious?"
"Hmmm, when he had to pull out all the guts. He'd been doin' good till then, but he got pale at that part," Daryl answered, chuckling a little.
"He somehow managed to leave that little part out of his story."
"Course' he did. What boy wants to own up to that?"
"True."
They worked in silence for a little while after that, before Rick's curiosity got the best of him,
"So, y'all thought about any names yet?"
Daryl's head snapped up at that,
"I haven't, Beth probably has," he told him while stabbing a walker in the back of his skull.
"Y'all got plenty of time to think of some. Ya know, Rick is a great name."
Daryl fixed him with a glare that had Rick laughing,
"I'm just kiddin' man. If ya don't have any names in mind, do you want it to be a boy or a girl?"
Daryl chewed on the inside of his cheek, he didn't really care,
"I just want it to be healthy…I'm sure Beth knows what she wants…just want both of em' to be healthy."
Rick nodded in understanding, deciding to leave the conversation at that. They quickly disposed of the few walkers they had found, before looking for any weak points in the walls.
"Think we should add more stakes around?" Rick asked Daryl.
Daryl thought about it for a few moments,
"Couldn't hurt."
Rick nodded and with that they headed back inside the walls to work on some more stakes. In their world, one could never have enough fortification. Hell was constantly lurking in the shadows, just when they thought they were safe, a new enemy would arise. All they could do is try and be prepared. They hadn't had any major threats so far, but they always worried if another Governor, or Terminus would happen. Daryl and Rick both knew that they'd do anything to keep their families safe, a threat to one of them, was a threat to all. They were one big family, all of them, and to survive in this world, families have to stick together.
So I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. The song Beth sings is Fotografía by Juanes and Nelly Furtado, and it is one of my all time favorite songs. Please let me know what y'all think, and I hope to get another chapter in this week.
