Chapter 8
Michelle swallowed as she followed Thor into the dungeons. She drew her leather jacket tighter around her.
"So…" she said slowly. "What's Loki like?" Thor looked back at her before continuing forwards.
"He's cunning and will try to work his way into your mind. Trust nothing he says."
"Got it. What if he says that he can't get out?"
"Don't trust him."
"So he can get out?" Thor looked back at Michelle before chuckling.
"You are clever," he said.
"Thank you?" Michelle said unsurely. They halted in front of a cell's golden energy barriers.
"Loki," Thor said. "This is Michelle. She will be watching you by decree of the Allfather."
"How fascinating," Loki said without bothering to look over. "Odin must have truly fallen if he has to recruit the help of a lowly Midgardian." Thor clenched his jaw angrily, but reined in his anger.
"I will leave you then," he said to Michelle. "Remember what I told you." Michelle nodded and Thor walked away with a billow of his cape. Michelle turned back to Loki and eyed him before sitting down on the three or so steps that went up to the cell. She pulled out her IPod and put her headphones into her ear. She scrolled through her songs before tapping on one. "Something Big" by Shawn Mendes began to play. Michelle hummed along before singing.
"Play the lotto you might win it.
It's like 25 to life so you bust out of prison.
Something's in the air, something's in the air
It's like that feeling when you're just about to kill it,
Take your last shot you know you're gonna hit it.
Something's in the air, something's in the air
Whoa oh oh oh oh
Something big I feel it happening
Out of my control
Pushing, pulling, and it's grabbing me,
Feel it in my bones like
Whoa oh oh oh oh whoa oh oh oh oh oh oh whoa oh oh oh oh
Something big I feel it happening
Oh whoa oh oh oh whoa oh oh oh oh oh oh whoa oh oh oh oh oh
Something big!"
"Midgardians are curious," Loki's voice said and Michelle turned.
"How so?" she asked, cocking her head slightly. Loki was sitting up and watching her now.
"You seem to have no semblance of order or appearance." Michelle looked down at her clothes. She was wearing ripped black jeggings, a dark green wrapped shirt, a black leather jacket, and knee-high black boots. Her earrings were black octagons with silver and diamond wrapped around them and her hair was in a braided bun.
"I like to think that I am unpredictable," she said. "And your clothes are quite honestly, much stranger than mine." Loki raised an eyebrow at her.
"You think so?"
"Yes, yes I do," Michelle said.
"Well, I've worn your clothes and they are very uncomfortable."
"I've worn yours and they aren't exactly the most comfortable either." The two of them looked at each other before the absurdity of what she was doing hit Michelle and she stifled a laugh. She was debating which style of clothes was better with an imprisoned Norse god! She quickly made her face neutral.
"Well, whichever," she said. "I think that we can agree that all to their own is best here."
"Aye." They fell silent and Michelle continued to listen to her music. She wasn't aware of Loki watching her with a peculiar expression on his face. After several hours, there were steps on the stairs and Michelle looked up. Reyna was standing there with her normal hard expression.
"Michelle," she said. "It's lunch time. I'm here to take over for you."
"Oh, thanks," Michelle said. She stood and winced as her back cracked. She wound up her headphone cords around her IPod and then put the IPod into her leather jacket pocket. As she walked up the steps out of the dungeon, she peeked back towards Loki and saw him watching her as well. Michelle quickly looked away and hurried up the stairs. She reached the apartment that she was sharing with Thalia and Piper. She saw them sitting in the living room and eating sandwiches while chatting. She walked down and plopped down on a chair, picking up and sandwich and biting into it.
"So how was prison duty?" Thalia asked.
"Fine," Michelle said after swallowing. "A bit boring."
"No prison breaks?"
"None. Rather wish there had been one though. Actually…no, I'm glad there wasn't one." Thalia and Piper both chuckled.
"Me too," Piper agreed. Michelle swallowed the last of her sandwich.
"So what were you guys assigned?" she asked.
"Training," Thalia said.
"I got your garden duty," Piper said.
"Then you should be a lot more dirty," Michelle commented.
"I changed my clothes!"
"Uh-huh," chuckled Michelle. Piper smacked her lightly and Michelle chuckled, shielding herself from Piper with a pillow. Thalia tossed a pillow at Piper and Piper returned the fire. Michelle grabbed several pillows and fired at both of them which resulted in a large pillow fight between the three of them. Eventually they sat back down on the couches, laughing and panting. There was a knock on the door and Piper got up to open it. A solemn Annabeth stood there with the look that everyone had come to associate with bad news.
"What?" Piper said worriedly.
"We've been summoned to a war council," Annabeth said.
"Sweet!" Thalia said, poking her head up.
"But there's another thing," Annabeth continued. "They know."
"WHAT?!" shouted all three girls.
"WHO?!" Michelle cried.
"WHEN!?" Thalia screamed.
"WHERE?!" Piper yelled. Annabeth took a step back.
"I don't know, but they want me, Percy, Thalia, Nico, Michelle, and Clarisse to go. The original six." Michelle and Thalia looked at each other and nodded slowly. "Keep your weapons," Annabeth told them before vanishing to go to her own room.
