Emmy was able to keep the smile on her face for her whole shift on the bridge, but as soon as she was alone in the turbo lift it instantly slipped away like running water. It wasn't that anything had been particularly wrong with the past week of bridge shifts, no one had been mean or rude. They just kept watching her when they thought that she wasn't aware of it, or when they thought that she was to preoccupied to notice.
But she had noticed every look, every silent communication, every whisper.
The past few days aboard the Enterprise, with all of the whispers and the looks had made Emmy very aware of when people were watching her.
She kept her smile though, she didn't need them to watch her more.
She hadn't thought working on the bridge would be so emotionally stressful, she had anticipated it being physically stressful during emergencies.
But being watched 24/7 during her shifts was something that Emmy wasn't sure she could handle, and Emmy had been handling a lot since that night.
Placing the smile back on her face she walked to the food replicators and replicated a tray to take back to her room for the night and grabbed some ration packs for tomorrow. Ration packs might not taste very good, but with the mood that Emmy was in she didn't want to see anyone. After this week and all of the shifts she had a lot of thinking to do, because she felt as though she was the star of some sort of exhibit and she didn't like it one bit.
Emmy couldn't help the big sigh that escaped her when the doors to her room swished shut. She placed her tray on her bed and silenced her door bell. Tomorrow was her first day off and she wanted to be alone.
It wasn't that Emmy wasn't happy to have friends and people to talk to, but at the same time it overwhelming. She had gone so long without really having people to chat with outside of work and at meals. But at the same time she couldn't help but wonder if her new found friendships were actually friendships, but instead a friendship that was brought on by guilt.
Did they even like her? Or, was this their way of trying to ease all the problems caused by that night on shore leave. Emmy couldn't decide, she wanted to believe the best in them. But all the looks and whispers were making her doubt her original beliefs.
Emmy was feeling a bone deep tiredness set in as she walked across her quarters to her shower. All she wanted to do was wash away the worries of today, and the past week, have something to eat and then sleep until she had to report for duty on the bridge in a day.
The shower felt wonderful as she stood directly under the water letting the hot liquid cascade down her weary body.
Feeling like a zombie Emmy walked slowly over to bed moving her tray of food to her night stand and fell into sleep as soon as she closed her eyes.
A firm hand gently shook her shoulder Emmy swatted it away, not understanding why anyone would be waking her up.
The hand shook her again and she swatted it again before turning her body over to the other side. No one should be in her room she thought sluggishly as she was right on the edge of dreamland again.
"Emmy" A voice said as the hand once again tried to wake her. She froze because she knew that voice, its silky smooth tone haunted her dreams and to Emmy it could never be mistaken.
Why was he in her room Emmy thought squeezing her eyes shut trying to avoid the truth.
"Emmy your rate of breathing has changed, you are awake" He said with certainty
Emmy could deny it no longer Spock was in her room.
"Spock" Emmy said as she turned over to face Spock who was standing directly above her.
"What are you doing here at 0500 hours" Emmy questioned as she sat up squinting to see the time while running her hands threw her hair trying to figure out how much of a rats nest her hair had turned into while she had been sleeping.
"How did you get into my quarters?" Emmy asked quickly before he could answer.
"There was growing concern about your welfare when you failed to appear during dinner hours last night" Spock said stiffly arms behind his back.
"Oh okay" Emmy replied as she let his answer sink in.
Silence filled the room.
"How did you get in my room?" Emmy questioned slightly hesitant to ask not sure if she wanted to know the answer.
"As first officer my security codes open all crew quarters in case of emergency" Spock replied his tone even as always and his voice smooth.
"Okay so you got in here with your codes, and you were worried because I didn't come to dinner last night" Emmy repeated back to Spock trying to absorb everything that had come out of his perfect mouth.
"As first officer It was logical to come and asses your welfare when concern arose from other parties last night" Spock said interrupting Emmy.
"At 0500?" Emmy asked shyly trying to discreetly remove the sleep from her eyes.
"It was an optiumal time to inquire to your health without causing more slander in your direction" Spock answered quickly sounding slightly concerned.
It brought a light blush to her checks Emmy ducked her head slightly to hide the pink on her checks.
"I will make a full report on your status to the converned parties" Spock said heading to leave
"Kat was the concerned party wasn't she?" Emmy asked with a small questioning smile
"Commander Richards did express her concern but she was not the only party." Spock responed back to her before giving her a nod as he quickly walked out of her room.
Emmy sat in bed confused and sleep drifting back over her. Quickly pinching herself so that she knew that Spock in her room was not a dream, she laid down with a slight smile wondering what all of that had been about.
