CHAPTER 12

It had been months after I had taken and passed the boards exam and now things were gonna change for Mark and me even more.

"Mark…" I softly said as I lightly shook him to wake him up; it was 2 AM. He mumbled a bit and slowly woke up.

"Mhm, what?" He said a bit groggy as I watched his eyes close again.

"Mark, wake up." I shook him again and his eyes opened.

"Are you okay, Lex?" He was still half asleep.

"I need to go to the hospital." I said and this caught his attention.

"Are you okay?" He sat up a bit and looked at me.

"Y-Yeah…I-I-I think so…" I nervously said as I sat up and slowly got out of bed.

"I have to go." I got dressed and headed to the door.

"Hold up, Lex." Mark said as he stumbled out of bed, got dressed quickly, and we were on our way to the hospital.

At the hospital, one of the nurses wheeled a wheelchair over for me to sit on as Mark told them to page Dr. Isaacson.

"How're you doing?" Mark asks me before a nurse shows us to a room. I get dressed into one of the patient gowns and slowly sat down on the bed.

"Oh god!" I moaned out as I grabbed Mark's hand tightly and leaned forward. He held my hand while his other hand rubbed my back.

"Does this answer your question?" I look up at Mark with a small smile.

"I can only imagine how painful it is, but you'll do fine." He reassures me while stroking my hair softly.

A few minutes later, Dr. Isaacson walks in and looks at both Mark and me.

"It's nice to see you again Lexie, you too Mark." She smiles as she slips on a pair of gloves.

"Alright, let's see what's going on." She sits on a chair and rolls it in front of me. She examines me for a few seconds before saying,

"This is a good sign. You should be ready in a few hours." I cringe at the word "hour" because of all the pain.

"Hours?" I question,

"Really? Can't I just…be ready now?" Mark and Dr. Isaacson laughed,

"You're almost there. Once you've reached 10 centimeters, that's when you're ready."

"What am I at right now?" I ask, in hopes she'd say a higher number than 5.

"You're at a 7 right now." I let out a soft sigh in relief, but at the same time I let out a groan of disappointment.

"That's not a bad thing, Lex." Mark says as he grabs my hand.

"It's not." Dr. Isaacson agrees.

"I know, but I'm in so much pain…OH GOD!" I place a hand over my belly and whimper.

"I'll be back in a few hours to check again." Dr. Isaacson snaps her gloves off and leaves the room.

"Mark…" I whine softly,

"I know…" He moves some hair away from my face.

"Do you want some ice chips?" I nod a bit,

"Okay, I'll be right back. Oh, did you want me to call Meredith and Derek now?" I turned my head to look at the clock on the wall and noticed it said 2:15 AM.

"It's still too early…maybe when I'm closer." Mark nodded before he left the room to get me ice chips.

A few hours later, I was in more pain, and when Dr. Isaacson came in to examine me again she said,

"It's time." I looked at her with happiness. I was so glad she had said that,

"OH thank God!" I blurted out.

"Okay Lexie, don't push until I tell you to, okay?" I nodded, but after she had said that, I felt like pushing.

"Okay, push." I hear her say and in that instant I began screaming in pain as I pushed. Mark held my hand and I'm pretty sure I may have broken his hand because I was holding on PRETTY tightly.

"One more push." Dr. Isaacson said and I followed her command. Each push I did made it feel like my body was on fire, as if it was shredding to pieces.

"Oh god…" I groaned before pushing a few more times. Suddenly, I hear the sound of crying.

"It's a boy." Dr. Isaacson informed Mark and me.

"Would you like to cut the cord?" She asked Mark before handing him a pair of scissors. He took them and gently cut it.

"Wow, that's spongy." He joked before returning to my side.

"You're a doctor, Mark. Why are you so surprised?" I tried my hardest to hold my laughter in. A few nurses cleaned up the baby, wrapped him in cloth, before handing him to me.

"Hi baby boy…" I softly whispered which caused me to tear up.

"Hi…" I whispered again while stroking his hand gently with my finger.

"He looks just like you, Lex." I smile and look up at Mark.

"He has the Sloan nose too." Mark smiled proudly.

"Do you guys have a name yet?" Dr. Isaacson asked. I shared a look with Mark before we looked at Dr. Isaacson.

"We were thinking Noah." I looked at the baby and smiled,

"Noah Sloan…" I whispered before leaning over to gently kiss his head.

"It's perfect." Mark adds while looking at me and Noah.

"I'll leave you two alone." Dr. Isaacson excuses herself.

"Here, let me get a picture." Mark takes his phone out, I look at the camera, and he takes the photo.

"It's too bad I look horrible right now." I laugh softly, feeling tired and weak.

"You could never look horrible." He says as he leans in to kiss me.

"Mhm! Did you call Mer?" Mark shook his head,

"No, everything went so fast. But I'll call them now." He dialed their number and held the phone up to his ear.

"Hey Derek, you and Meredith should come to the hospital. Room 129." I hear him say,

"Just do it." He clearly wanted it to be a surprise.

"If it wasn't serious, I wouldn't be calling you at 4 AM, now would I?" He laughed a bit,

"Just head to the hospital." Mark quickly said before hanging up.

"Was he half asleep?" I asked,

"Yeah, but I think he knows. If not, then when he tells Meredith, she'll know. Somehow women have that weird sense of knowing things without all the details." I laughed,

"She's my sister. If we understand each other, it's because we're related. Like…telepathy. Only we aren't twins." I looked down at Noah and smiled softly.

"I can't believe I'm a mom now." I say before looking up at Mark.

"You're gonna be an amazing mom." He says while placing a kiss on my forehead.

"Mhm, you wanna hold him?" Mark's eyes brighten up,

"Of course I do." I gently hand him over and Mark takes him.

"Wow…" He whispers with a smile.

"You should dress him. The bag is right there." I point near the door at a bag.

"Got it."

A few minutes later Meredith, Derek, and Zola were here and they were surprised when they saw the baby.

"Oh Lex. He's beautiful." Meredith said in aw as she approached us and looked at Noah.

"What's his name?" Derek asked as he, too, looked at Noah.

"Noah." I say as Derek pats Mark on the back,

"Congrats, old man." He teases him, like always.

"Oh shut up." Mark responds to the "old man" comment.

"See the baby Zo?" Meredith looks at Zola and points at Noah.

"That's your baby cousin, Noah." Zola stared at Noah before babbling what sounded like "baby."

"That's right my Zozo, that's a baby." Meredith said in her baby-talk voice.

"She's grown up so fast." I say while looking at Zola.

"I know." Meredith kisses her head.

"Hey, you wanna hold her Mer?" Meredith looks up at me quickly as her face lights up with happiness.

"Yes! Of course." She hands Zola to Derek and I gently hand Noah to her.

"Hi there. I'm your aunt Meredith." She begins speaking to Noah.

"How do you feel?" Derek asks me.

"Right now? I'm jumping with joy, but at the same time I'm tired." Derek nodded as he placed Zola on the couch and sat down next to her.

"I can imagine. You should get some rest."

"I will, but not now. I have guests over."

"Well, we won't be staying long."

"Sorry we called you guys so early. I guess we were just so excited." Meredith laughed a bit,

"It's okay, I'm glad you did. Cause now I can see my little nephew."

"Yeah, but you could have seen him when it was a decent time."

"Oh no, I don't mind. I wake up this early anyway when I'm on call." She had a point I suppose. I looked at Mark,

"We're parents…" I softly said, but then corrected myself,

"Well…I'm a first time parent, you're not, but you know what I mean." Mark laughed and kissed me.

"Well, it's a first time for me in the sense that this is OUR first kid." He held my hand and smiled.

"Yeah…"

"And I still love saying that. OUR kid. Knowing that it's yours and mine, Lex." I smiled as Derek laughed softly.

"You guys are so weird." Derek said using a baby voice. This somewhat entertained me.

"Isn't that right Noah? Your mommy and daddy are crazy." I rolled my eyes as I laughed.

"We're crazy…in love." I said feeling so corny for saying that.

"Yeah, you're so cute." Derek said to Noah, completely ignoring us now, as he lightly tickled Noah's tummy.

"And now you know that Derek is human." Mark teased him which snapped Derek out of the baby-talk spell.

"Oh whatever Mark. I'm just glad little Grey here changed you for the better." I raised my eyebrows when Derek called me "Little Grey." It had been years since anyone had called me that.

"Yeah, I am too." Mark agreed. We shared a look before looking back at Noah.
