Chapter 5 – "The only mom I have"

"Just what exactly happened to you?" mommy says looking really angry

"Umm…" I look at Edward to see that he's just standing there looking afraid and I realize he's not going to say anything " We got in a bit of a silly discussion and umm…seeing as we were in the bathroom we also kind of started a water war and…yes that's it. We apologize mother." I explain, looking down ate my feet.

"Do you think that was an appropriate thing to do Isabella?" mother asks narrowing her eyes at me

"Renee calm down. They're kids that were just playing around. That's what little kids do. I'm actually pleased to see our little Bella acting like a kid her own age for once." Daddy says smiling at me

"Are you insinuating something Charles?" mommy says in a disbelieving voice

"No honey. What I'm saying is that Bella's still a little girl and as so she should do what little kids do and that's playing around and with other kids." Daddy explains calmly

"But-"

"Let them be honey. Kids go wash up and come back for dinner. This time without tickles or water involved, okay?" daddy says snickering

"Ok!" I reply tugging Edward along with me to my room with Maggie right behind us.

"I'm just going to grab a few towels from the bathroom. You guys stay here and do not get yourselves into any more trouble, okay?" Maggie says while trying to look sternly at us but failing big time

"Yes, ma'am!" I say curtsying jokingly.

Maggie exits the room and I notice just how quiet Edward really is.

"Is everything okay?"

"Are we in trouble?" he asks looking at me worriedly

"No, no, of course not. Daddy got it. And even if he didn't the worst mommy could do was give us a lecture of how un-lady like and un-gentlemanly it was for us to have played and have gotten ourselves dirty before dinner or something like that." I answer trying to reassure him that nothing's going to happen to us. He visibly relaxes after that.

"Thank god. I was worried your mom and dad would be really angry and kick me out. Or worst. Ground you or something like that." He explains

"Can I give you a hug? You look like you need one."

He looks confused at me but nods.

I hug him tightly and he hugs me back!

"Mommy and daddy are not kicking you out and even if they were I wouldn't let them. So you don't have to worry about that. I promise. You're kind of stuck with me now." I say smiling at him and squeezing him one last time before letting him go.

"I was more worried about you than myself. I've learned to take care of myself. But I'm glad that everything's okay and that they're not kicking me out to the streets because I don't really want to go back there. And I know this might sound weird but I don't mind being stuck with quite as much as I thought I would seeing as you're a girl and all that. You're pretty awesome. For a girl." He says shyly while looking at his feet.

"Aww that's cute!" I say while throwing my arms around him and hugging him again "That's exactly why you're my bff!"

"Ok kids. Here you go. "Maggie says while walking into the room and handing us both a big white fluffy towel each "Do you need any help getting dry?"

"No. Thank you Maggie" I say grabbing the towel and starting to dry myself

"Umm… No, thank you." Edward says quietly while grabbing a towel for himself

"So… You talk, hum? I was starting to wonder if the cat had gotten your tongue." Maggie asks, smirking at Edward

I just stand there with my towel mid-hair waiting to see if Edward actually answers Maggie. He looks at me questioningly and I nod as if to give him the "go ahead".

"Hum, yes, I do talk. My name's Edward." He says while extending his hand for Maggie to shake.

"Nice to meet you lil' guy. My name's Maggie." She says shaking his hand. "Well I'm going to let you guys be. Don't forget to hurry though because dinner is already served and you don't want to have to eat it cold, okay? If you need anything else, call me."

"Okay. Thanks Maggie." I answer her.

When Maggie exits the room yet again I turn to Edward and say

"I think she likes you."

"Who?"

"Maggie."

"Oh! She seems nice." He says shrugging his shoulders and shaking his head like a dog to dry his hair which just ends with his hair sticking in every direction but okay.

We go to the dining room again after we finish getting dry and changed and even though mommy isn't yelling at daddy she's not talking to him either.

I sit at the table in front of mommy and motion for Edward to sit next to me facing daddy.

We eat in silent until mommy asks me

"So Isabella have you read any of the books I bought for you yet?"

"Umm. No, mother. I can't read them yet." I answer looking down at my plate.

"Well what's the point of me buying you all of those books if you can't even read them?" she says looking at me, waiting for an answer

"Renee she's four years old. She's a four year old girl who can already read and you're disappointed with her because she can't read Emily Bronte yet? Do you know how many teenagers can't even read it by themselves and understand it?" daddy says

"Well isn't she supposed to be a prodigy? If she can't read those books than what am I supposed to brag about in the Sunday brunches with my friends?" mommy says looking insulted

"How about the fact that she's four and can already read? Hum? I think that's a pretty good reason to brag to your friends about. I mean how old were you when you first started reading? And not just single words but a whole book? A small book, but a book nonetheless?" daddy tries reasoning with her

"Well okay but that's not new. I've already bragged about that to everybody. Everybody is already amazed with that. You know what? Never mind. " Mommy says rolling her eyes " Now you." She says focusing on Edward and pointing at him. Said Edward that stopped eating immediately and is looking like a deer caught in the headlights. His face was kind of funny to see, actually. "Do you have a name?" She asks snobbishly

He looks at me silently asking me what to do. I nod for him to go ahead and answer mommy. Poor thing. Mommy can be a handful sometimes.

"Um… I do ma'am. My name is Edward Anthony." He answers smiling shyly at me.

Mommy looks a bit shocked at Edward's politeness. Good. I smile

"And how old are you?" mommy continues her interrogation

"Six, ma'am."

"Really? And what were you doing on the streets? Shouldn't you be in school already? Where's your family?" I gasp. I look at daddy and I can see he's probably thinking the same as me. Edward probably has no family. And his family is probably something he doesn't want to talk about and mommy just asked him about it probably knowing that as well. Now that's just mean.

"Renee! That's enough, don't you think? You're always talking about politeness and what not and yet you have to admit that that was not polite. At all. Just let Edward finish his dinner. When he's ready to tell us anything he will. Until then, let the poor boy be." Daddy says looking sternly at mommy

"But don't you think we have a right to know? What if someone is looking for him? And I mean he is just that - a poor kid and he's living under our roof for Christ's sake! God knows where he's from! Excuse me if I want to know what kind of scum is living in our house!" mommy says getting progressively louder.

"Renee!" "Mother!" daddy and I scream at the same time.

I look at Edward and he's sunk in his chair and is looking down at his lap, looking ashamed.

I grab his hands in mine and say

"Don't mind her Edward. She's just being hurtful. You're the best Edward. You really are."

He keeps on looking down.

"Look at me." I say "Come on. I'm not going to petrify you if you look at my face. I promise!" he graces a smile at that and finally looks at me "That's better. Mommy is just mad and so she just wants everybody else to be miserable as well. She just wanted someone to take her ire on. It's not your fault. You just happened to be the perfect target for her. Do you understand me? You're great and you've done nothing wrong so just ignore her. That's what I do most of the times." I tell him winking at him. He laughs and then nods.

"Thanks." He says quietly and squeezes my hand.

"Anytime! That's what friends are for." I say.

I turn to mom and dad, who are arguing and ask

"Can we be excused from the table please?"

"Of course. Go ahead. Goodnight kids." Daddy says getting up to kiss my forehead and pat Edward's head.

"Goodnight daddy. Love you!" I say kissing his cheek

Edward looks scared to say anything but I squeeze his hand to say that it's alright.

"Goodnight sir." He says quietly looking at the ground

"Forget that sir crap. Just call me Charlie" daddy says

Edward smiles slightly at that "Goodnight Charlie."

"Goodnight mother."

"Goodnight ma'am." Edward says

Mommy just looks at us and I can tell she's not going to say anything so I just pull Edward behind me to go to my room.

We get ready for bed and I grab a book from my bookshelf and start reading it to him.

"Bella?" Edward says quietly

" Yes?" I say and stop reading the book.

"How can you read if you're just four? I mean I'm sorry if I'm being rude but it's just that I was wondering if you weren't too young to actually know how to read. Aren't you supposed to start learning how to, at like 6 or something like that?" he asks looking embarrassed

"Oh! That! Well you see when Auntie Esme comes over she always reads me a story and one day I asked if she could teach me how to read so that I could read whenever she wasn't here and she taught me. I can only read small stories of course, nothing like the ones Auntie Esme reads but she says I'm doing really well with my reading and that I'll get better if I keep on practicing so I thought you might like it if I read you a bed time story. I mean I didn't even ask you if you wanted me to but I just thought that you might like it because I know I really like it when Auntie Esme reads to me and how peaceful I feel afterwards."

"No! I like it. I really do. I was just confused about how you could already read by yourself. That's all."

"Oh! Okay! Can you read Edward?"

He looks down embarrassed and doesn't say anything. I'll take that as a no.

"It's okay. If you want to me and Auntie Esme can teach you."

"Really?" he says looking excited

"Absolutely. I'm sure she won't mind. Auntie Esme is the best! She's really nice and she gives me all these cool books whenever she visits!"

"Can I ask you something else?" he says looking uncertain.

"Sure! You can ask me whatever you want."

" Why do you call your mom "mother" but you call your dad "daddy"?" he asks

"Oh! That… I used to call her mommy but she'd always lecture me about how that was a baby thing and I was a lady and as so I should call her mother because that's how ladies threat their moms. So seeing as I didn't want her to get mad at me and lecture me anymore I started calling her mother whenever I'm speaking directly or in the same room as her. You see that's how mommy sees everything. Everybody's defined by their money and social status and as so everybody has to be at their best at all times and childish things are nothing more than that- childish, un-lady like and inappropriate. And so I should always act like a lady. I guess she just likes to control everything…" I say shrugging

"That's… a bit rigid. Don't you think? I'm not trying to be mean or anything but…" Edward says cautiously

"I guess. I mean mommy is a bit snobbish at times but… She's the only mom I have so…" I say quietly "I just want her to be happy at me so I just do what she tells me to do. It's just easier." I say picking at my nails.

"I didn't mean to upset you. I'm sorry I asked." He says looking concerned at me.

"I know that." I tell him.

And I really do. I know Edward is a nice person. I don't think he could ever be mean. At least not on purpose.

He notices I'm feeling kind of sad so he hugs me and doesn't let go.

"Thank you."

"For what?" he asks, confused.

"For being my friend. And an awesome friend for that matter." I tell him "You are my friend right?" I ask, unsure.

"Of course I am. Were the bestest of friends, remember?" he says smiling at me.

"Just making sure." I say smiling back at him.

We're silent for a bit until I say

"Edward?"

"Hum?"

"I'm really glad you're here."

"Me too Bella, me too." He says squeezing me in his arms.

"Goodnight Edward. Sweet dreams."

"Goodnight Bella. Sweet dreams."

After that I fall asleep pretty quickly. The last thing I remember thinking is just how much I like Edward's hugs.

A/N:

Hey guys! First of all I'm sorry for any mistakes I may have made but it's just that I wanted to get this to you guys ASAP and it's almost 2 a.m so there might be some mistakes in there. If you've spotted one please let me know! Now onto this chapter: what do you think? Don't you just hate Renée's guts? I know I do! And just how cute are lil' Edward and Bella?! This chapter was supposed to be half as big but these little fellas didn't want to go to bed. And who am I to say no to their cute little faces? I'm thinking of maybe writing outtake in Epov but I'm not sure if I'm going to. Let me know what you think of that idea and what you thought about this chapter!

You guys are the best!

Hugs and kisses,

Rafaela :)
