Chapter 9

'The Common Boy'

The break

After lunch I went back to the smithy, the master smith looked at me and asked, "Chain main or swords?" I responded swords. I heard someone groan behind me, I turned around and saw Fred sitting by a forge he said, "Why do you always have to choose the one that takes the most work?" I responded, "Because it takes less time, and we will have to do both any way." He sighed and helped me prepare for making swords. I asked the Samuel, The master smith. "How many do you need?" He looked at me and said, "Let's see you make one first."

I nodded and got to work, an hour later I had made a four foot long iron sword. I was about to start making the handle when Samuel grabbed the sword and swung it against the anvil. Sparks sprayed everywhere but the sword held fast, he said, "good, now give it an edge before you make the handle." He handed it to me and I walked to the grinding stone to give the sword an edge, Samuel said to Fred, "I'm surprised he didn't protest." Fred said, "He believes in his work so he knew that it wouldn't be done any harm. And he like working with metal, if it broke he'd get to make another one."

Samuel laughed and went back to his work with a smile on his face, about half an hour later I came back with the blade sharpened, Samuel dropped a hair on it and the hair split in two, he said, "it's a fine sword, now put a handle on it and set it on the rack next to your forge." I did as he told me and turned around and asked, "What next?" he smiled and said, "Make 300 dull swords for training," I nodded and got to work, by dinner I had just finished making my tenth blunt sword, when Fred dragged me off to eat then rest.

Matilda was waiting for me when I got to the cabin after eating a late dinner, she said, "Lord Wyldon said that I could train with you during weapons training. He said that Francis pushed you to hard and that you need someone who will help you learn the basics not instinct." I smiled and said, "That's great," she nodded and went on, while you work in the forge the rest of us have to help build a few new Barracks, soon we will have to expand the forts walls,"

I sat down next to her and said, "If it comes to that I can expand the forts walls, and If you ever need help just ask, I'm always willing to help, and everyone here will willingly help you. "She smiled and then thanked me and laid down to go to sleep, I laid down next to here and went to sleep.

Two weeks went by, the soldiers went from the basic training to simply practicing against each other in a separate part of the field, while the rest of us advanced in the basics. It took me one week to finish the swords and then we started splitting our training on third archery, one third staff work, and one third swords. I made sure that Matilda didn't fall behind she was advancing steadily, my archery was already far superior to that of most of the others here, do to my previous training. Lord Wyldon switched my to an advisor during archery so I could fix some peoples mistakes, many disapproved of that. I needed to work on the sword more, Matilda could beat me at it every time, but with the staff I could hold my own.

The construction went smoothly Two new barracks were erected, though we would have to expand the fort if any new people arrive I think that me and Numair can take care of that. In the forge I started doing simple tasks for people in the forge, Fred was working on some kind of chain and Samuel was working on some gold wire.

Everything was going smoothly, until suddenly during training there was a huge jolt of pain in the back of my head and I saw someone trying to break into the barrier. I felt it shatter then I passed out.

MATILDA

I watched as David's eyes closed and a look of complete pain etched itself across his face, there was a loud explosive boom, off in the distance and David collapsed, I yelled, "HELP, somebody, everyone had been looking toward the sound, Lord Wyldon ran over and asked what happened, I said, "It looked like David was in pain then when the sound came he passed out." Numair ran over, looking at the sky, he yelled, "David are you alright? Your shield was broken, they've gotten in."

My body started to glow, I touched David's for head and whispered wake up.

DAVID

I opened my eyes, then jumped to my feet letting my power unleash, I ran to the northern wall and leapt onto it I looked into the distance and said, "They still don't know where we are but they will soon, we must prepare." I turned and yelled, "NUMAIR I need your help." He was at my side almost instantly he asked, "What do you need?"

I responded, "I need you to build a shield around this place as strong as you can, and hold it." He nodded then asked, "What about you?" I summoned the sword next to my forge and covered myself in magic made armor. I said, "I'll get rid of the soldiers and get the Mage to follow me back here were there will be traps to ensnare him." Numair asked, "TRAPS?" I nodded and jumped over the side of the wall running out to the enemy
