Chapter 4 - The Second Warning
As I walk home I start thinking about if I really wanted to go into that faction or if it was just my feelings over riding my common sense. Something every Erudite has been told never to do because it clouds our judgements and therefore our knowledge. What we knew for certain would be a doubt and what seemed dangerous would seem like the safest thing to do.
As I'm about to go through an alley that was a shortcut to my house a Factionless woman dressed in surprisingly not all that dirty clothes, suddenly appeared in front of me. I jumped back in surprise, then after processing the hurt look he had I cattiously took 2 steps forward and tried to get around him. But as I was about to walk past he stopped me and grabbed me firmly by my wrists.
"Now, listen to me girl. Listen hard because I'm not going to repeat this again. I took a great risk coming here but I've been given a job and I must carry it out. I must tell you that you need to move faction. You must not stay in Erudite. You must not. That is unless you have a death wish. If they even get as much as a sniff of what you are then," she said slowly letting go of my wrists. "You're a dead girl walking."
I started rubbing my wrists with my hand trying to calm down the redness when I replied,
"Wait, how do you know about my results. I thought no-one was allowed to know. Especially the Factionless."
"We have people on the inside. More people than you think. And we try to save as many people as we can but we can only save those who trust our word. Do you?"
Her alluring bright green eyes pierced straight through me and for some reason I just nodded my head confessing I trust the women I met merely 2 minutes ago. She started walking away when I noticed how sunken her face looked. Like she was starving. I reached into my pocket and took out 2 chocolate bars I was going to save for later.
"Hey.." I said. She turned around and looked at me with my hands stretched out towards her containing 2 chocolate bars.
"Want these?" She quickly walked back towards me and placed them into her woollen jumper and gave me a flash of a smile and started walking away again.
"You know what? They were right about you. You really don't belong in Erudite." She shouted back at me.
"Who's they?" I shouted back with curiousity. But she just kept on walking until she was no longer there.
I turned back down the alleyway and walked until I came up to my house where I turned the keys and walked in. How the hell am I going to tell my family about me being a target who must be killed for their own faction.
