Chapter 12- Revealed
"Do you trust me?"
"What?" Arthur asked, confused.
"I said do you trust me?" Merlin replied.
Arthur hesitated. "Yes, of course."
"Completely." Merlin insisted.
"Completely! Now, why are you asking me this?" Arthur asked. Merlin sighed and decided to show Arthur instead of tell him.
"Arthur- promise, that, whatever I tell you, you'll give me a chance to explain? And you'll be calm, listen, and then act?"
Arthur was reluctant. What was Merlin asking him? Then, his curiosity won him over, and Arthur replied, "Yes." Merlin nodded and took a deep breath. Then, he started to reveal the secret.
"Alihar." Merlin nodded towards a bronze pot and Arthur watched on in shock as Merlin's eyes turned gold and the pot floated up in the air.
Arthur had no words for him, except, "You're magic."
Merlin cleared his throat. He took a deep breath and started to explain. But, then, Arthur grabbed his sword and held it up to Merlin's throat.
"Arthur?"
Arthur saw Merlin's eyes turn gold and the pot float in the air. Arthur said, "You're magic." Before Merlin could explain anything, Arthur's instincts took over him and he grabbed his sword. Arthur pushed it against Merlin's throat until he could barely breathe. The sword was within an inch of his life. Arthur looked at the terrified look in his best friend's eyes and lowered his sword carefully. Merlin sighed with relief and started breathing heavily. "You've betrayed me Merlin. I-I can't believe you would do this to me! How could you!?"
Merlin searched in his head for answers. What was he supposed to do- say, "I'm sorry." An eternity passed before Merlin answered. "Sit down, sire. I have a lot of explaining to do."
Arthur hesitated. Then, he shook his head. "I'm not taking orders from a sorcerer. You're lucky I didn't kill you!"
Merlin's heart broke a little at this. He knew that Arthur couldn't help feeling this way- after all, he was the son of Uther Pendragon. However, this still hurt him- his best friend- the one he'd saved time after time- didn't trust him anymore. So much for the answer he gave him before.
After wrestling with different ideas of how to break this to Arthur, he settled on one statement. "It all started when we first met…"
