Chapter 7:

Truths, Lies, & Untold Secrets.

A couple stood in the hallway of the apartment building, talking amongst each other in a very irate, hushed manner..

"I don't have a title maybe, but I'm NOT one of your common whores Riley." Huffed an impatient blonde young woman.

Riley looked down both ends of the hallway before moving in closer to shush his highly aggravated companion..

"Dammit Cin.. I have NOOO other females, calm down okay? Shit."

Cindy McPherson raised a French manicured finger to his face to stop him in mid-sentence..

"No. Hell no Riley. I refuse to let you shut me up THIS time. We're gonna talk about this. Where the fuck do you get off-.."

Riley sighed loudly, his eyes rolling back into his head.

"Cindy.. Why are you raising your voice? I'm standing right in your face."

"Well I see you're having a little trouble comprehending my words, So.."

Riley's face deadpanned..

"Shit ain't cute girl.."

"Who trynna be cute? I'm TRYING to understand you, & make you understand me.. but you.."

She scoffed, "When you gonna tell your brother about us? Matter of fact, when you gonna tell ANYONE about us?"

Riley rolled his eyes before rubbing his light goatee..

"You ashamed of me?"

Shocked, Riley gently grabbed her hand, putting it over his heart..

"Stop saying that shit okay. Why we gotta broadcast what goes on in our home? You happy with me ain't you?"

"Don't try to flip this back onto me Freeman, & it didn't become OUR home until recently.. But what I really want to know is..

what are you afraid of the world knowing?"

She sighed deeply before running her hand through her bleach blonde hair..

Cindy was torn. She was a strong-willed young woman, & she had a man of the same conviction by her side.

But was he totally there for her? She couldn't help but question him at times,

I mean if you love me you wouldn't hide anything about us..

Riley had the nasty habit of making Cindy feel guilty for even bringing up the subject of them telling people about their relationship, She did have the same sentiments about their privacy, but DAMN.. it wasn't like she was asking Riley to make an announcement about it on the local news.

No one really knew they were together.

She just wanted the important people to know.. Cease. Jazzy. GrandDad... even Huey -_-

Cindy hadn't even told her mother, who through Riley, had actually severely repaired their mother-daughter relationship.

And her mother adored him, She'd annoy the living hell out of Cindy asking about him every time she visited.. but inwardly, she would beam.

Cindy carefully squinted up at her taller, darker & devilishly handsome boyfriend.. who was gazing at her thoughtfully.

He really had grew into an amazing guy. She loved him dearly.. & even envisioned a bright future with him.

But, this issue was still lingering, & after 2 years it was getting old. She didn't want to hide her love anymore.

She was proud of what they built together..

Cindy looked into Riley's maroon eyes before stepping in closer to wrap her arms around his neck.

I'll give him the chance to come around to it, it's not like I can force him anyways.

She gently pecked his full lips.. "Alright Esco, I'm done nagging you for today.. let's just go and visit your grumpy ass brother, I wanna go have lunch."

Riley grinned warmly, kissing her nose & returning to her lips for a deeper more intimate kiss..

He pulled back, as she slightly gasped for a bit of air.. gazing at his girlfriend of 2 years.

Her slightly short stature, Long flowing locks.. (why she dyed her roots black to make her hair look dirty blonde, he'd never understand), big blue kewpie doll eyes.. & small pink bow-shaped lips.

Finer than Angelina Jolie & Scarlett Johansson combined.

He was truly lucky.

As Cindy walked ahead of him down the hallway to his brother's door, Riley quickly exhaled.. thankful that his irate girlfriend gave up on her routinely rant on where their relationship was going.

It's not as if Riley didn't think Cindy was worth telling the world about, sometimes he wanted to scream at the top of his lungs, professing his love for this girl(in the manliest way possible.. of course.)

His biggest fear was outsiders.. haters.. instigators.. people that couldn't stand to see Riley & Cindy live such a successful, young & flashy lifestyle.

He was no saint, & he didn't want his old skeletons spilling out into his new fruitful relationship with the girl of his dreams.

Riley knew she doubted him at times.. & he also knew he was at fault for it.

But one thing he could promise her, & preach until he was blue in the face.. He was committed to her. And her only.

The day he told her he wanted something real, he meant it. It did hurt to hear her question him.. but he knew how she felt, maybe not completely.

But he'd promised her & himself, that with enough time he would let things naturally flow into the course they were SUPPOSED to be on.

He.. just needed a little more time.

"I've missed you.."

Jazmine's eyelashes fluttered.

Huey's jaw that was clenched tighter than a vice grip, finally relaxed.

Then he came to the realization of what he had done.. He'd basically set the platform for Jazmine. Now it was her turn to counter him.

"Jaz.."

Her eyes slowly rose to meet his once again. Her expression was unreadable.. If Huey didn't know any better, he'd think it was remorse.

She finally spoke..

"Thought I'd never hear those words from you.. of all people." She laughed quietly.

Huey shifted uncomfortably.. Yeah he knew he was notorious for being a little more on the asshole side, and he REALLY hoped she wasn't going to delve into that subject.. he was having a hard time already expressing how he really felt about her & being completely sincere.

Jazmine exhaled.. running her hands through her strawberry-blonde curls, & laughing into the uncomfortable silence that had fell in between them.

His eyes had the opportunity to gaze over his former flame..

She hadn't changed her natural beauty a bit.

"Thank God.."

She leaned back into the couch next to Huey, who noticed the space between them had enclosed, her arm was touching his side.. & her wild curls had found a familiar spot on his arm, that was casually draped across the head of the couch.

She probably didn't even notice she was laying against his arm.

Until she looked over at him.. they were face-to-face.

And she wasn't the slightest bit timid about it..

Huey felt himself move in closer.. it was a sub-conscious action.

And maybe, impulsive?

But honestly.. after being without her for so long..

Just being alone period.

This familiar feeling felt good again.

It felt great.

So he leaned into the couch even more.. his posture becoming more slouched, his forehead noticeably grazing hers.

She grinned a bit, looking down at his knees, settling more into his arm.. that instinctively wrapped around her small frame.

Huey's face held a slight wistful smile.

"The last time.."

He could tell she was feeling the same thing, she HAD to be..

The silence between them had fell into a more comfortable state.

...Even if they hadn't really resolved or even spoken on where they stood with each other.

"

Is this closure?.."

Whatever it was, Huey couldn't seem to let go. He hadn't realized how much little shit like this was important to him.

"I thought that things like this get better with time,

but I still need you..

Why is that..?"

It had been years. Years had pass. Two entirely different people, who were all the same deep down.

Why did they even try to escape it?

Each other?

"It don't matter who you are..

It is so simple..

...a feeling.."

Huey closed his eyes.. embracing her even more.

Jazmine grasped his hand, silently tracing the outline of his palm.

If he could remain like this.

He would..

"It is so simple..

...a feeling..

But it's everything."

He really missed her.

More than she could ever understand.

KNOCK. KNOCK.

His eyes still closed, Huey grimaced a little..

"Moment over much too soon."

He patted Jaz's lap for her to let him up.. She gently obliged, her feet sweeping off the hardwood floor & sitting them under her legs comfortably.

He looked back at her still making herself more at home, despite the moment being halted for now.

She only stared back in response.

He knew she understood they were unfinished & pretty much in a standstill.

They weren't quite ready to talk about the past.. in fears that they might relieve the pain.

& not quite ready to separate themselves from one another.

He hesitated before speaking again..

"I.. I know we're not together."

Jazmine squinted, looking down into her lap.

She only shrugged.

Another surprise, who knew she could be so vague?

In that moment, there was a complete understanding between them.

Being selfish maybe, but acting on impulse.

Living through feeling & not logic.

There'll be consequences most likely..

But no other choice seemed to make sense.

The two were purely acting on the way they felt.

"I'd be stupid to pretend I didn't care.."

It was clear to him that she was still important, & he needed her time and presence in his life..

It felt so foreign now.

He couldn't say that he wanted her back..

Because he wasn't sure if he actually did.

Hence, the slight guilt he felt.

He was only sure of one thing.

He missed her.

And up to this point, Jaz seemed to be in the exact place.

They hadn't had a proper conversation yet, so he didn't even know if she was spoken for now..(or not.)

Huey could feel the longing in her heart.

The feeling was mutual.

Their eyes never leaving each other's gaze.

What now?

KNOCK. KNOCK.

"Man open up, it's me!"

Til' next time..
