A/N: Wow, thanks Wide Eyed Beauty, "Guest" and AboveAvenue for the reviews! :) You guys are awesome!
I guess the fear hadn't come to me until then. When Carley had her gun pointed at Andy's head, I knew she probably wouldn't shoot me, but the reality of where I was came at full force. My whole body felt hot, and I started to sweat. And my stomach was aching, out of all the things that had to happen. I didn't want to get sick right then and there. Not when I had to get home.
"...in the bag?"
A voice interrupted my thoughts. I darted my eyes, trying to find the source.
"What's in the bag?" Lilly said again, with more force in her voice. She directed her gaze towards my duffel bag.
I almost forgot about it, and stupidly blurted out: what bag?
Lilly frowned. "Are you deaf?"
Carley, without easing her grip on her gun, glanced at Lilly. "Lilly, calm down."
"Why should I?" Lilly retorted. "She probably has a gun in there!"
"No," I said, hesitantly zipping open my bag. I tried showing her the contents, but it was a little tough with her behind the wall. "It's just my stuff, I swear." I zipped it close again.
"Listen," Andy said. "we came here to maybe get some gas."
"Why do you need gas?" Carley asked.
"For the generators," Andy replied. "Our farm is protected by an electric fence, which relies on the generators."
"Yeah. And how are y'all doing on food?" Danny asked. "We own a dairy farm up ahead. We've got plenty of food."
"So," Andy said. "Y'all wanna trade?"
Lee's group grew silent for a moment. Then, I saw Carley whisper something to Lee. Then Lee spoke up, "Okay. We'll give you some gas in return for some food. We'll see where it goes from there."
Andy smiled. "Sounds like a deal." Then, while Lee's group was getting ready to go, he looked at me. "So, you wanna come back with us to the farm?"
"Yeah, that would be great," I replied. "If that's okay with you guys."
"Hey, minus well," Andy said. "Can't let you wander around here by yourself."
"Well, I guess not." I adjusted my bag. "But, I'm not that vulnerable."
Andy raised an eyebrow. "Do you even have a gun?"
"Well, no," I said. "I don't know how to use a gun. I was supposed to learn before, well, this happened."
Andy was about to speak again when Lee's group walked towards us.
I offered my bag to Carley. "Here, you guys can have this."
Carley opened the bag and her eyes widened. "All of it? Are you sure you don't need anything?"
"Maybe some of it, I don't know," I replied. "But you all need it more than I do."
"Thanks," Lee said. I smiled, and looked up at him. He was a lot taller than me. "Why don't you give that bag to Lilly then?"
"Aren't you coming to the farm?" Andy asked.
"Well, I'll let everyone sort through my stuff first," I replied. "I'll go later. I'm worn out."
"All right, then," Andy said.
Lilly opened the gate, and I walked into the motel's parking lot. There was some truth to what I said: I was tired from all that traveling I did before. But, I couldn't tell everyone that. I just needed a few minutes to hang out. And I also didn't have a weapon. Fucking hell.
I gave Lilly my bag and she opened it, seeing the full contents inside. She put the bag on the ground and sifted through it, while everyone else gathered around her. She pulled out some maxi pads, tampons, a half eaten bag of potato chips and some beef jerky I got from a gas station. There were also a few other snacks in there, a book and my Nintendo DS. If I hadn't finished any of the food, I would have probably thrown it all away when I had gotten home.
"Just take all of it," I said as Duck took out my DS. "Except give that back to me when you're done, okay? I paid good money for that."
"That money doesn't matter anymore," Kenny said. " And why're you just giving all this to us?"
"Because, her dad already said she has food on their farm," Lilly answered.
"He's not my dad," I said. "We found each other in the woods."
Katjaa looked at me. "You're by yourself?"
"Well, I was with my family," the lie came out a little easier this time. "But we crashed our car."
Katjaa looked at me with sympathy. "Oh, no. I'm so sorry."
"Um, it's okay," I replied. I guess she thought they died. "Oh! I'm Gemma, by the way."
"It's nice meeting you," Katjaa said, smiling.
Lilly held the bag of maxi pads in her hands, turning towards me. "I guess I'll need some of those back," I said, gesturing towards the maxi pads."
"Thanks for all this stuff, but if you're looking for a place to stay, we already have more than enough people," Lilly said. "I'd let you in, but we can't afford it right now. I'm sorry."
"No, I understand," I replied. "It's hard enough as it is."
"Maybe we can live on the farm," Katjaa said. "Then we can support everyone."
"I don't know about that," Kenny responded. "We'll have to see when Lee and everyone else comes back." He looked at Duck and Clementine, who were busy playing with the DS. "I'm not taking any chances."
"They seem like nice enough guys," Larry said. "And I'm not going to sit here and starve another day!"
"I know, Dad," Lilly said. "We all want to trust them."
I sat down on the ground and stretched my legs, looking at Lilly. "I guess we'll have to wait."
Talking, talking, talking, blah blah blah in this chapter. Sorry about that!
