AN: Okay, so now I'm going to be writing in alternating POVs, not just one per chapter, and the NNaE (if you don't know what that is, shame on you!) will be the one whose POV it is. Oh, and, in case this wasn't clear (it wasn't, I know), when Alex was calling Carol and she had to leave for Zamaron, it was in the episode Love is a Battlefield, so it's not a totally random thing I came up with. In other news, I have to draw a Canadian landscape for art class, and I'm failing miserably. I should probably be working on that... Oh well! This world is much more interesting than the real one!
Chapter 6: Rings
Alex (Jordan) POV
Previously, on In Blackest Day, our heroes had just received magic power rings from five different Lantern Corps (what the hell is the plural for that anyways?) and have no idea what to do next!
I stare in shock at the ring and pray to God that it isn't Hal's. I hold my hand up and the ring slides onto my finger, a perfect fit, and suddenly I feel the fabric on my skin change and my vision turns green.
When the green glow fades, I'm wearing a Green Lantern uniform identical to Hal's. I lift my hands up to my face and feel a mask, but it's not covering my eyes like Hal's does. I turn and run to the hallway, where a mirror is hanging on the wall. My eyes are an unnatural green, even though they're supposed to be blue.
Then the ring on my finger flashes. I touch it and a holographic image of a little blue guy with hair like my grandfather's is emitted from it. "Alexander Jordan? I can't believe the ring chose another Jordan. Oh well. Report to Oa at once!" He yells at me, and then the image shuts down.
"Wait! Where's Oa? What's going on?" I yell at the ring, but nothing happens. Then the ring gives another holographic image, this time of a map that I barely understand. "What?" I ask, but the ring seems to have a mind of its own and I lift off the ground and fly out the window.
Alex (Walker) POV
I step forward and grab the ring out of the sky, expecting one of my siblings to be behind such a stupid prank. After all, we had all heard the rumors. We all know that Uncle Saint is a Blue Lantern. "Noah! That is not funny!" I call out, my youngest brother coming to mind. No response. "Mary? David? Johanna?" I ask. Thomas? Was it you? I ask my brother. Was what me? He asks. I shut him out.
I stare down at the ring in my hand. It's still glowing. Then it starts to float. It floats out of my hand and slides itself onto my finger. My vision is suddenly completely taken up by a bright blue glow.
Soon, the blue fades, and I look down at myself. I'm wearing a black and blue, skin-tight jumpsuit. The body is blue and the legs and arms are black. There are knee-high blue boots replacing my green Converse, and fingerless, elbow-length blue gloves are replacing my woolly red mittens.
A holographic image appears, emitted from the ring. When I see who it is, I immediately morph back into my real self, the suit morphing with me. It's Uncle Saint. "Xanilia? The ring chose you?" He asks. I nod. "Xanilia? Your niece?" A voice asks. My uncle nods to the voice.
He moves whatever is showing him to me to show a small blue man wearing a white robe with the same symbol that adorns my chest on his. "Hello Xanilia. I am Ganthet, the... Saint Walker, what is my title?" He begins to introduce himself.
"Advisor!" My uncle suggests. "I believe I'm a bit more than your advisor, but I suppose that's the closest to the truth that there is. Anyways, Xanilia, I am the advisor of the Blue Lantern Corps, which means that now, I am your advisor as well. I would like you to come to the planet Mogo as soon as possible. Would that be alright?" He asks me.
"I must clarify with my parents." I tell him, not realizing that I accidentally said it in Astonian until my uncle approaches the small man and translates what I said for him. Making sure I'm speaking in English this time, I tell him, "I'm sorry Mr. Ganthet. The shock of the situation must have-" "It's quite alright, Xanilia. I should've understood, but my Astonian is a bit rusty. Perhaps you can help me regain some of my skill once you arrive." He tells me, smiling.
"Of course, sir." I say. "Don't call me sir. Please, call me Ganthet. Now, could you please go and speak with your parents, Xanilia?" He asks me. I nod. "Of course, Ganthet." I say, and then fly back into my house.
Johnny POV
"What do you mean? What? What does avarice even mean?" I ask the now dead ring lying on the ground. I pick up the ring and shake it vigorously, then shove it in my pocket, climb the stairs back down to our apartment, grab my phone, and look up the word avarice.
It means greed. But how am I supposed to save a dead ring from some greedy guy named Ophidian? I pull the ring out of my pocket and try putting it on. Everything turns orange as soon as it slides onto my finger.
I suddenly remember every time I was jealous of someone for something they have, and get the oddest urge to go and steal from them. I take a deep breath and try and push those thoughts out of my mind. I don't realize that I was yelling in concentration until my sister, Anastasia, runs into my room in a panic, demanding why I'm screaming.
My first thought when I see my little sister is the time when she got more allowance than me because she got 100 on a math test. I shove the thought from my mind and collapse to my knees, gripping my head, screaming.
And then I think of Silena. I was never envious of anything Silena had, never had any negative feelings towards her. And using the thought of the slender blonde as my rock in the river of greedy thoughts rushing through my brain, I begin to win over the orange glow that's still dominating my vision. Soon it's nearly gone and all greedy thoughts have disappeared.
"Yes. Yes! You did it! You are the strongest I have met in a long time." It takes me a moment to realize that the voice saying those things were coming from the ring on my finger. My sister is staring at me like I'm a rock star or something. "Johnny. Why are you Orange Lantern?" She asks me.
I look down at myself. I'm wearing a skin-tight orange and black jumpsuit and orange and black sneakers. "What the hell?" I breathe. "The young one is right. You are now an Orange Lantern. I am Antolian, the true Orange Lantern entity of power. I chose many Orange Lanterns to serve my purpose, defeating an evil alien race in an intergalactic war.
"I have long forgotten what we represented, and whom we were fighting, but I do remember the day I was usurped by Ophidian, who changed the Orange Lantern Corps. We became symbols of greed throughout the galaxy.
"When I was usurped, I lost all my power, but I was not killed. I transmitted my essence into a single ring, and have been gaining back as much power as I could over the past few centuries. I have also been scouring the galaxy for a pure heart, who would not be overtaken by greed when they put on the ring. When I found you, I had to use all of the power I had amassed over the centuries to travel here, which is why the ring died out. But you are now fueling the ring.
"For me to teach you to control this power, you must follow your friend Alexis Walker to Mogo, where I can properly train you, and then, when the time is right, we must travel to Okaara, the home planet of the Orange Lantern Corps, and take back the Orange power battery, because eventually, the power of this ring will fade away. Do you accept your mission?"
I stare at the little orange object on my finger. "Johnny?" Anastasia asks. I look at her. She looks genuinely scared. Of me. "Everything will be all right, Annie." I tell her, kneeling down in front of her. "I trust you Johnny." She says. I hug her tightly. "I... I have to go somewhere. I'm not sure when I'll be back, but I will be back. I promise." I whisper to her. She nods.
I grab my phone and dial Alex's number. "Um, Alex, are you by chance traveling to a planet called Mogo for your family vacation?" I ask her nervously. "Not on vacation. I got a Blue Lantern power ring and I was told by the advisor to the Corps to go to that planet. Why?" She asks.
"Um, my new Orange Lantern power ring told me that I have to go there to be trained." I tell her. "Ah. I see. Be at my place by eleven and we'll get going." She says, then hangs up. "Well, this'll be an adventure." I mutter.
Silena POV
I step forward and take a deep breath when I see what's through the shimmery pink portal. A crowd of tall blue-skinned women is waiting for me. I glance around my room and make a decision. I step through the portal.
My vision flashes pink for a moment and then I am somewhere else. I notice that I am wearing a pink ring. I am also wearing completely different clothes from the ones I was wearing when I was back home. I'm wearing a strapless pink bodysuit and tall darker pink boots. Long, fingerless pink gloves go up past my elbows, and a pink mask is plastered on my face, but shows my eyes, which are at the moment glowing pink.
"What is this? What's going on?" I ask the blue women. They look at each other. "A battle is taking place, but some of us left to come here because we were alerted that the ring that we sent out to find a host several weeks ago under Guardian order had found someone." One of the women tells me.
"Who are you? Where am I?" I ask. "We are the Star Sapphires, and you are on the planet Zamaron. You come from Earth, do you not?" I nod in shock. I'm not even on Earth.
Suddenly, another blue woman flies up to us. "Dr. Lania! We need you! Now!" She yells as she's still flying towards our little group. The woman who was talking to me nods dutifully and flies away. "What? What's going on?" I ask, but my voice is drowned out by another of the women asking the same thing.
"Have we won the battle?" Anther woman asks. "We won the battle, but we're about to lose Gieta." The woman pants. And then she turns to me. "Who is this?" She asks. "I'm Silena Anderson." I say, stepping forward. "Well, I am Queen Aga'po of Zamaron. I would welcome you properly, but my niece is dying." She tells me, and flies back in the direction she came.
All the other women follow their queen. The portal is still open. I can go home if I really want to. I can leave this place behind. I can forget about this planet, and never think about this place again. I turn away from the portal and follow the Zamaronians.
Roy POV
I look down at myself. I'm wearing a red and black jumpsuit that looks really similar to Green Lantern's. "Come, Roy McEntire. I will show you the way to the remains of the planet Ysmault, where the home city of the Red Lanterns, Shard, is located." The ring is speaking to me in my mind. I find that I don't even have a say in the matter, the ring just flies me away.
I look around. The city looks beautiful at night, but all I can think about is my mom. What if she wakes up while I'm gone? Or worse, if she... she... no. I can't afford to think like that.
I wonder about the other colored rings I saw in the sky. I wonder who they went to. I wonder if any of them went to my friends. We're moving incredibly fast. As we leave Earth's atmosphere, I wonder if maybe one of my friends has also been forcefully transported to a distant planet.
"If they are, it does not matter. Your friends don't exist for you anymore, Roy McEntire. Only duty and service to the Red Lanterns exists for you now." The ring speaks in my mind again. "Shut up." I tell it. It doesn't seem to acknowledge what I said.
Suddenly, we come into range of a planet that looks so similar to Earth, but there is one difference. There is a glowing green band of light encompassing it in the form of a Green Lantern ring.
"Agh!" My ring screeches in my head. I take it as a chance to gain control over it and try to direct us towards the planet. "No! How could you?" The ring groans. I ignore it and enter the planet's atmosphere, bypassing the green ring.
Soon I've landed right near a cave. Inside the cave a holographic image of Alexis and Johnny, both dressed in Lantern uniforms, is floating from a blue device resting on a crude stone table. "Come on Xanilia." A very, very strange looking man sitting near the table whispers.
Suddenly I collapse to the ground, a blue light flashing in my eyes. "Argh!" I screech, matching my ring's screams of agony. "Who is that?" The strange man's voice comes from somewhere. "A Red Lantern." Another voice says coldly. And then I black out.
