Zander's POV
Why am I looking at myself passing through the door? That is not supposed to happen!
"Hey Zander." Stevie smiles at him.
Why is Charlie wearing my clothes? And why do I have the feeling he looks better in them than I do? We are literally identical and he looks more handsome! How does he know I was here?
"Hey baby. Whatcha two doing?" he asks her, attempting to seduce her with my smile.
"Playing a song," she replies. "Anyways, Charlie, I finished your song. Do you like it?" she asks.
I look over to... Zander. His eyes widen in surprise and his lips twitch slightly upwards.
"You finished my- Charlie's song?" Charlie asks awkwardly, getting confused as much as me.
"Well, yeah. It's not really good, but oh well."
"Do you have lyrics?" he asks skeptically.
"Yeah, but it's sort of cheesy." she says sheepishly.
"Can I listen to it?" he asks.
"Sure thing darling." she says and starts to play the piano.
It's been a bad day
A really really bad day
"I'll kick you in your balls" kinda day
I lied
I cried
I was paralyzed
Defied
Denied
I realized
Confide
I tried
Traumatised
You think you had a bad day? 'think you had it rough?
Taken all I can take, now I''ve had enough
You think you had a bad day? 'think you've had it rough?
Taken all I can take, now I''ve had enough
Enough
It's too late now to tell them
Why I'd rather jump than feel the fall
Feel the love oh
You guys are so lame
But I'm not to blame
At least I'm awake
And playing the game
You lie each night pretend you're alright
Read my tattoo it says "screw you"
'Just give it up' I learnt it from you
From me?
From you, from you, from you!
You think you had a bad day? 'think you had it rough?
Taken all I can take, now I''ve had enough
You think you had a bad day? 'think you've had it rough?
Taken all I can take, now I''ve had enough
Enough
Charlie and I just stay still as the music quickly dissolves into the lemon scented air of the pawn shop.
"I know it's sort of weird, but-"
"I like it." Charlie interrupts bluntly, smiling at her.
"Really? Thanks Zander." she smiles at him.
SHE'S SUPPOSED TO SMILE AT ME.
"Were you... Sad? You know, when you came up with this?" I ask her, trying to get her attention away from Charlie.
"I wasn't sad Charlie. I just remembered the way your song sounded, and it sounded pretty sad. I guess I just had to add to it," she replies casually, then looks down at her lap for a few seconds. She then looks back up at me. "Charlie?"
"Yeah Steves?" I say to her.
"Why is your song so sad?" she asks me.
Now that I think about it, I don't know how to answer Stevie's question. Charlie never really told me anything. What am I supposed to say? Do I lie to her? Do I tell her I forgot the reason why?
"Charlie told me why his song is so depressing," Charlie says, clearing his throat with an unreadable look in his eyes. "He wrote it a long time ago. Around the time his mother passed away." he says, and I think his eyes start to look a bit... Shiny.
"Oh. Charlie, I'm so sorry." she says resting her hand on my shoulder.
Biologically, Charlie's mom is my mom. I never really got to know her. I'll assume she was a good person. I wonder if I should cry. Is it bad not to care? Is it bad not to have any feelings towards the person who gave birth to me? I wonder what she was like. Was my mother a great person? Was she into music as much as I was? Was she cunning and beautiful as I am today?
"It's fine Stevie." I say.
"Charlie, can I have a moment with you?" Charlie asks me, a a nervous tone in his voice.
"Sure, Zander." I say as we two head out the door. Stevie just shrugs as and starts to play the piano randomly as we exit.
"Charlie, I know you're mad-"
"You bet I'm mad. Seriously? You stole my identity!? That's stealing! That's a crime! Why the hell would you do this, Zander?" he yells, glaring at me.
"You would do the same thing too if someone you loved liked someone that looked exactly like you." I whisper as I cup my hands over my face, lean my back against the brick wall, and slide down to the floor. I sigh as my body goes limp from stress. I'm so happy I have this fedora.
"Dude, are you crying?" Charlie asks me.
Okay, I hate this fedora.
"I'm not crying. I'm just sweating from my eyeballs." I say as I pull the fedora over my face.
I'm so pathetic. Am I really in love with Stevie? Was I that desperate that I had the nerve to steal my brothers's identity? I'm pathetic, and I hate myself for that.
Charlie sits down next to me and puts his arm around my shoulders.
"What's wrong Zander? Tell me what's wrong."
"I like Stevie, but she doesn't like me." I say abruptly, drying my eyes.
"What do you mean?" he asks.
"Don't you see? Stevie likes YOU. Haven't you noticed how much you've been making her smile lately?" I snap.
"Zander, don't worry. I don't like her back. I like Kadee. She's just a friend-"
"That's the whole point! Sooner or later, Stevie will confess her feelings for you and you'll reject her. She'll be left with a broken heart, and... I won't be able to comfort her."
"Why?" he asks me curiously.
"I'll just remind her of you! And she'll cry even more."
"Dude. You sound like a heartbroken narrator in a movie or something. You're thinking too much. Stevie doesn't like me. She likes you. I wasn't her best friend for who knows how long. I just met her a few weeks ago."
"I know you're trying to make me feel better, but I'm just being realistic. You've been making her happy for these past few weeks. You two played the piano at the pawn shop. She even finished your song for you!"
"Now you're making this sound like a bad thing. I know she wrote a great song for me, but what about you two? Don't you two write songs for the band?" Charlie asks me.
"Yeah, but... She never wrote a song for me. She hasn't laughed or smiled like that in years-"
"That's because of the Perfs. Duh. Don't worry dude, you still have a chance!"
"As much a chance as you have with Kadee-" I mutter under my breath, hoping he doesn't hear me. Unfortunately, he does.
"What did you just say?"
"Nothing."
"WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?"
"I'm sorry Charlie. I'm just really frustrated." I sigh.
"Just because you're sad, it doesn't mean you can be a dick."
"I know, I know," I apologize. "Yeah right. Tell Stevie I had to go back to the hotel or something. I'm sorry."
"Zander-"
"Bye." I say as I get up and walk away.
