Chapter 15

The minute that Jenny had heard the fire alarm, she'd known she needed to find Gibbs, Abby and Tony and make sure they were out safe and sound.

She heard the fire had started on the floor of her classroom, so she was glad that she'd left early to see if Gibbs would like to get coffee with her, she'd been halfway to the bullpen when the fire alarm had sounded.

The smell of smoke began to fill her lungs just as she reached the exit, never had she been so grateful to be outside in November before in her life. The sun hurt her eyes and the sound of all the people talking and the sirens hurt her ears, it was worse than the corridors at lessons change when she used to work at school.

"Mummy" Jenny turned and saw Abby in Karen's arms, Tony stood next to Stan and Will, but where was Gibbs.

The redhead rushed over to them and took Abby from Karen and hugged her baby girl tight and with her free arm pulled Tony close to her , "Where's Jethro?" she asked the three adults who were all looking after you shocked.

"You mean you didn't meet him?" Karen asked, sounding shocked and worried.

"No, why?" Jenny asked putting Abby back on her feet, her heart was beginning to pound fast in her chest again.

"He went back for you, the fire was on your floor" Stan explained to her.

Jenny swore under her breath before letting go of her children and leaving them in the people who were fast becoming her friends and then went back to the NCIS building, cursing her boyfriend the whole time. Why did he always have to be a hero.

She pushed through the crowds of people and their voices telling her not to go back and telling her she was crazy, surely if they were in her position they would do the same thing.

Covering her mouth with her sleeve she pushed open the door with her foot. The redhead looked between the elevator and the stairs and knew it was smarter to use the stairs.

As fast as she could in her heels she ran up the stairs as fast as she could, the smoke in the air getting thicker the more she climbed and the hotter it got.

"Jethro" she called once she'd reached the floor where the fire had started, she took a breath which was a very bad thing to do as she began coughing everywhere, so much so she almost had tears rolling down her face.

Hearing a groan she headed down a corridor where her classroom usually was, she looked around the corner and what she saw made her panic.

Gibbs stood in the middle of what used to be the classroom for the Probie agents, his gun on the floor, while another gun was being aimed at his head.

"Put the gun down" Gibbs told the man opposite him, his heart was beating so fast in his chest, for many reasons one, he still didn't know if Jenny was okay, 2 the fire was getting worse, and if they didn't leave soon they would probably get trapped and die and three, he didn't want to go this way, not when he saw so close to finally being happy.

"If I put the gun down there is no way you're going to let me leave here" the man who'd started the fire told him, he was guilty for the murder that he'd been bought in for but he wouldn't be going to prison, he'd rather burn and if that meant this agent had to go down with him then so be it.

"We're both going to die if we don't get out of here now" Gibbs told him, going to take a step forward.

"Don't move any closer or I'll shoot" the gunman yelled at Gibbs. Jenny who was still hiding outside really didn't know what to do, she had to get Gibbs out, had to live, couldn't die in here.

"Okay" Gibbs told him, coughing a little from the smoke beginning to fill the room. "Don't you have a family?" Gibbs asked the man.

"Shut up" the gunman yelled at him, shaking his arms about.

"I have a family" Gibbs told him "I have a girlfriend who I want to spend the rest of my life with, wont you let me do that?" he asked "Won't you let me see her little girl grow up, to see her son at his first football game?"

Jenny's heart swelled, Gibbs really wanted to stay with her forever, he really wanted to be such a part in her children's life, he loved her that much.

"What part of shut up don't you understand, if I can't go home, if I can't see the people I love, why should I let you do the same" the gunman replied, his hand gripping his gun tighter "Now we are both going to die" he told Gibbs, pressing his gun to Gibbs' head, the agent closed his eyes and tried to think of Jenny, Abby and Tony, trying to think of their faces, of how much he loved them, of how he was never going to see them again.

Gibbs waiting but the bullet, the pain, the darkness, he heard the trigger being pulled and instead of the pain in his head it was in his chest, the sharp, seering pain of a bullet ripping through him.

His eyes flew open, he saw the gunman was on the floor and Jenny behind him holding a chair, "Jen" he mumbled just before he fell to the

Jenny threw the chair behind her and climbed over the limp body and rushed to Gibbs' side as he fell to the floor, she managed to grab his head before it hit the ground, "Jethro" she called to him gently, brushing his hair out of his face "Stay with me" she told him, knowing that he'd collapsed because of inhaling too much smoke and the gun shot to his chest, blood seeping onto his grey polo shirt.

"Jen" she heard him mumbled making her smile and tears spring to her eyes, she pressed her hands on his wound, hoping the pain would wake him up but no, hoping it would stop the bleeding, it didn't.

"I'm here" She told him, she herself could feel her lungs being to fill up with smoke, "I love you" she told him, pressing a kiss to his lips, before she herself passed out on top of Gibbs minding his wound, grabbing her now bloody hand and entwining it with his.
