Steve rubbed his brow as he took in what Danny had just said. Moving? He almost felt angry, not necessarily with Danny, just with all the bad luck he was having. He closed his eyes and got himself together, he hated feeling like a mess, he didn't feel strong. 'Just be grateful that you and Danny are back together, deal with the rest as it comes', he thought to himself. He opened his eyes, took a deep breath and approached Danny once again.
"When do you leave?" Steve asked, as he held hands with Danny.
"In 3 days," Danny said, almost unable to get the words out of his mouth. He looked so upset, so annoyed about the whole situation. Of course he was so happy that his aunt was getting better, but his life here was so great. Having Steve in his life was the best thing that could ever happen to him, if he went back to Jersey, everything would just fall to pieces again.
Steve's eyes widened as he heard the answer. That was so soon. He felt so relieved that they had patched things up now, because things could have been very different if Danny had left and they were still fighting.
Steve could see the angst in Danny's eyes and immediately reached in for tight hug. Danny rested his head comfortably on Steve's shoulder, and felt better as soon as he was close to Steve again.
"I don't want to go," Danny said, still wrapped up in the hug.
"I don't want you to go either. You have to stay…you could live with me."
Steve couldn't let Danny get away, not like this. He had just got him back in life. This time he fully trusted him, respected him, and loved him. He wasn't holding back this time round, he was going to do everything in his being to make sure they stayed together.
Danny pulled his head back so he could look Steve in the eyes, "How the hell would that even work?"
"There has to be some way, we can always try," Steve said with so much honesty in his eyes.
"I guess we could try, but I have no idea how the hell you expect it's going to work!" Danny replied and pulled away from Steve completely.
"I need you in my life, I love you."
Danny stared at Steve with his hands on hips, almost looking smug, "I like this."
Steve looked confused, "What?"
"You being all sentimental and loving, you don't do it very often. It's cute."
"Anytime, babe," Steve replied sarcastically.
Steve grinned and grabbed Danny back in for a hug and grabbed onto his ass. He nuzzled Danny's ear and slowly moved down and gently kissed the nape of Danny's neck.
"This you can do more often, I like this too," Danny replied, slowly lifting his chin up so Steve get in closer.
Steve pulled away and pulled Danny's head down so that he could look him in the eye. "Other than making sure that you stay here, this is all will be doing. I assure you."
"You assure me? I'd hope so."
Steve and Danny arrived back at Steve's house, fully aware that Doris was home. Steve was about to approach Doris, when Danny pulled him back and moved him into Steve's bedroom.
"What?" Steve asked.
"We need to get our story straight, we can't just bombard her with all this information. I mean do we tell her that we are together?" Danny said, seriously.
"No way!"
"I don't want to tell her either, but if we did, it might make our story stronger, she might have a heart."
Steve looked dumbfounded at Danny, there was no way his mother would be cool with any of this. Maybe this was going to be too hard after all. Steve sighed and though about it all for a bit.
"We can just try, and see what happens," Steve said, all too confidently.
Before Danny could stop him in his tracks, Doris walked past Steve's bedroom and noticed the both of them.
"What's up boys?" Doris asked.
All the confidence was struck out of Steve because she was there. Of course Steve was strong in many other ways, but he just couldn't tackle his mother. She always got her way, and that infuriated Steve.
"What? No, nothing," Steve managed to say.
"Oh well. It's nice to see that you boys are friends again," Doris said too sincerely, and continued to walk down the passage way.
Danny let out a deep breath and hit Steve hard on the stomach.
"Ow!"
"Look, this isn't going to work, it's not going to happen."
Steve rubbed his chin, he knew Danny was right.
"Wait, we could ask your mother first. Get her on our side. Would you be able to tell your mother about us?" Steve asked, gently.
Danny shivered at the thought of telling his mother, but Steve was probably right. She would probably take it better than Doris would. She would just want Danny to be safe and happy, and she knew that being with Steve did that. He didn't want to make a big deal about his relationship with Steve, not like last time, it cost him too much.
"Yeah, you're right. We'll tell my mother."
"You sure?" Steve said and rubbed Danny's shoulder.
"No, it's the right thing to do. We can see what she says and go from there," Danny said, growing braver by the second.
They both went to Danny's house, and found Marie packing away things into boxes. The two of them stood there, staring at her. Steve was waiting for Danny to say something, but could see that he was nervous.
"You want me to be here for this?" Steve whispered to Danny.
Danny nodded and took a deep breath, as he approached Marie.
"Mom?" Danny said.
"Oh hi honey. Hi Steve," Marie said casually.
"Mom, I have something I need to tell you," Danny said, serious as ever.
Marie stopped packing and gave Danny and Steve her full attention. Danny prompted for her to sit on the couch, with he and Steve following her in to the lounge room. Steve sat on the sofa near the corner with Marie sitting in the chair in the center. Danny didn't want to sit, he couldn't, so he paced back and forth staring at the floor.
"What is it hon? I'm kind of busy," Marie asked.
Danny stopped pacing and looked up to Steve. Steve nodded, which gave Danny the final courage he needed.
"Mom, I'm gay. Well I'm not really, I'm in love with Steven and we are together. I don't really like other guys, well I don't think so. No, no I don't. Just Steven. Yep. So there you go. Oh and I can't not be with him, so I want to stay in Hawaii and not move back to Jersey. And stay with him. What do you think? I really could have said that more clearly but there it is," Danny said in one breath.
Steve couldn't help but smiling at Danny, he was so nervous and he was so cute. Steve had no idea how he was going to tell his own mother, he would just have to suck it up and do it.
Marie sat there with her hand over her mouth - it was hard to tell if she was covering shock or covering a smile. Either way she looked very confused, trying to say something but unable to get it out.
Steve could see Danny starting to freak out more than he was before. Neither of them knew how she would exactly take the news, but they never thought she wouldn't say anything. Steve panicked and decided to say something, to clear up what Danny meant.
"I'm in love with your son. And you might have noticed ever since we met Danny hasn't been getting into so much trouble. He has been good in school and making lots of friends. Do you agree?"
Marie nodded, fully listening to Steve.
"So what Danny is trying to say is that even though he loves you and his family, the best thing him for him right now is stay in Hawaii with me so he can stay on the right path. We haven't really figured out the rest of it yet, but we think that's what needs to happen. I know we haven't known each other for that long and you probably think it's a teenage romance or whatever, but you know how tough Danny had it back in Jersey and how great he is doing now. The last couple of weeks were different because we weren't together, but we have sorted everything out and are now stronger than ever. So what do you think Mrs Williams?"
Danny was so smitten with Steve after that speech, he was so glad he was there, he couldn't have explained it like that, but its exactly what he felt.
Marie relaxed back on the chair and struck a smile. That was a good start, both of the boys thought.
"I can talk now?" Marie asked.
Both of them nodded, and Danny sat down next to Steve to listen what she had to say.
"First of all, I don't care that you are gay or not, you are my son and I love you. Secondly, I can definitely see how much happier you are since you've meet Steve and it warms my heart to know that you doing well at school and not getting into trouble anymore. I will have to ask your father and you siblings and see what they think, and Steve, see what your family thinks - but I think it could work," Marie said.
The boys looked over the moon with happiness; their plan was starting to work. Before they could even think of celebrating Marie spoke up again.
"But, the only thing I'm not sure on is the teenage love you were talking about Steve. I was a teenager once and in love, and I know how it controls your life. I'm not wishing it but it might not work out between you two. All I'm saying is just look out for each other, and if things don't work out stay civil and stay friends. It will be much easier for the both of you, okay?"
Both Danny and Steve nodded, looking at her like they knew the consequences, but in their heads were thinking that that wouldn't happen to them.
"Thanks Mrs Williams," Steve said.
"You can call me Marie you know."
Steve laughed, "Yea I guess I can."
"Thanks Mom," Danny said and got up to go over and give her a hug.
Marie squeezed tight and let out a big sigh.
"So have you told your mother and father, Steve?" Marie said with a look of worry.
Steve shuffled his feet, "No, I don't know how. I'm not sure how it's going to go over."
"Well let me know how you go and I can help."
"Thank you."
"Let's go and see if we can get this over and done with," Danny said.
Steve sighed and thanked Marie once again. They went out to the front of the house, ready to go back into Steve's house. Steve stopped walking, and stood still in his tracks. He couldn't do it, but he so wanted to. He didn't want to feel weak because of his mother, he wanted to be strong. And he wanted to be strong for Danny, he would look like he didn't care about their relationship anymore. Steve closed his eyes and took a deep breath, and built up the courage.
"You alright babe?" Danny said, looking back at him.
Danny made him feel a hundred times better. His smile, those beautiful eyes and how sweet he was, that was more than enough for Steve to get over himself and man up to his mother.
He nodded and caught back up to Danny. They walked in the house, Steve feeling as strong as ever. His mother was reading a book by the window in the lounge room.
"Hi sweetie, back again?" Doris said casually as she put her book down.
"Yeah. Look Mom there is something I have to... We have to tell you," Steve said.
"What is it?" Doris said with a concerned look on her face.
Both Steve and Danny sat down opposite Doris. Steve looked at Danny a final time and received a knowing smile.
"Mom, Danny's Aunt is getting better and is moving to California for more treatment."
"Yes, I heard, that's such great news."
Steve couldn't tell if that had double meaning and Doris was actually glad in the possibility of Danny moving. He knew how much she didn't like Danny, which made this tougher than it already was. Though he knew that Danny didn't really know how much she didn't like him, though that might all change now.
"Yeah, well Danny and his Mom are moving from Hawaii back onto the main land. Danny and I were thinking because he is doing well in school and has made lots of friends, that maybe he should stay in Hawaii. And maybe stay with us."
"That's great that you are doing well Danny, but I think his mother and his family back home would miss him."
"We've already talked to Marie, she thinks it's a great idea, as long as you were on board."
Doris shot a stern look, directly at Danny. Steve half knew that mentioning that they had told Marie already would upset Doris, she hated knowing things last.
"Oh I see. Well no I don't think that will work out." Doris said with a very slight smirk.
Steve felt defeated ad he hadn't even told her everything yet. Danny could feel Steve's thigh shaking next to his. He looked at Steve to see if he could give it a go, maybe tell Doris more than she knew. Steve nodded and then looked away from everyone.
"Mrs McGarrett, your son and I are together. And we need to be together because we are good for each other. And I love him." Danny said and looked at Steve and smiled.
Doris put her book down and quickly stood up, looking angry. She shot a look at Steve before deciding she didn't want to look at either of them.
"There is no way I am letting you two live here together, okay? I can't believe you would even be telling me or asking me that. Danny, you are not a good influence on Steven, you are a trouble maker and I don't trust you. And Steven, I am so disappointed in you, I don't even know where to begin. I just don't want to look at you. Could you both please leave?"
Steve could hardly breathe, he hated that she could make him feel like that. But she had never talked to him like that before, it was strange. Danny grasped onto Steve's forearm and got him out off the couch. They walked out of the house together, without turning back.
"I need to get away from here, as far as possible." Steve said.
Sorry for the delay guys - my life is crazy. Have already started on the next chapter and I have a few weeks off so don't worry I will post more regularly. Probably only 2 or 3 chapters left to go anyways.
