Alice wouldn't take him home, but she did give him directions so that he could walk. "But you have to stay all day tomorrow." She'd said.
Ciel scowled at his feet. He hated walking. He quickly became aware that the shoes Alice had forced him to wear were more durable than those he was used to.
He walked past houses that were squished together, then past ones with large front lawns. When he reached homes with gated driveways, he started paying attention to the numbers plastered beside them.
Number 4093. He remembered Alice telling him.
As he passed a gate numbered in the 3000s, Ciel sensed something strange. Sebastian had told him that demons could feel when other demons were nearby.
Over the past century, Ciel had grown accustomed to the small feeling he got whenever his butler was around, to the point where he just didn't notice anymore. But this feeling was stronger, a demon he wasn't used to.
He looked through the gates and saw two men standing by a car. The older man was washing the vehicle while the younger man talked to him. Ciel recognised the younger man from the game the previous night. Alice had called him Bruce Wayne.
Ciel felt his lips turn up in a rare smile. So, he thought, one of them is a demon.
"Why not both?" Alice suggested.
Ciel tried not to let his shock show on his face. "Really?" He'd just told her about the feeling he'd had while passing that house. Now, he was regretting it. "Please explain."
"Well, you said the feeling was strong." Alice jabbered on. "Couldn't it have been a combination from the two of them? I mean, this is the first time you've encountered another demon besides Sebastian after becoming one yourself. How would you know?"
"I just do." Ciel scowled. "It's a demon thing."
Alice nodded. "Then it's probably the butler. The Wayne family has lived in Gotham for generations. Like I said before, they were the wealthiest family here before you showed up."
"Another demon butler?" Sebastian murmured to himself as he poured their evening tea. He didn't seem happy, and Ciel knew why. The last demon butler they'd encountered had been Claude.
Ciel blocked the memory, not wanting to relive the events that had led up to him becoming a demon.
Alice puller her cell phone from her pocket and tapped the screen a number of times. "His name's Alfred." She smirked and looked up at Ciel. "Seems he started working for the Wayne household shortly after Bruce's parents were murdered."
"That's not funny." Ciel responded flatly. "How did you get that information?"
"Internet." She showed him the screen of her phone. A lot of words swam before his eyes in front of a bright light. "Oh, you probably aren't used to the backlight." She pulled the phone away. "Basically, I can look up virtually any information within seconds."
"So can Sebastian." Ciel countered.
Alice smirked. "Yes, but I'm not a demon."
The next morning, Ciel noticed a long, red hair clinging to Alice's back. When he asked her about it, she laughed. "It's not a hair. It's thread. I make dolls in my spare time." She pulled a clump of fabric from her bag and showed it to him. "This one's not done."
"I can see that." He responded, noting the sewing needle sticking out of the dolls forehead. "What's it supposed to be?"
Alice smiled. "Death." She said cheerfully. "It's gonna be a Grim Reaper."
With red thread? Ciel forced the thoughts from his mind. If Grell had visited Alice, Sebastian would have known.
Right?
"Remember to stay the whole day, Ciel." Alice reminded him when they got to his first class.
"And what makes you think I'll listen to you?" Ciel said defiantly. "I am a demon. You are a mere human."
Alice forced a smile. "I wouldn't say a mere human. But, you are right, I can't force you to stay." She pulled her phone from her pocket. "But I can call Sebastian and request a certain tea for this afternoon."
Ciel wasn't sure if she was serious or not, but he didn't want to take that chance. Alice was always tricking him into trying strange tea combinations.
"Alright." He conceded.
"Good." The phone disappeared back into her pocket. "I'll meet up with you at lunch. Be good." She waved and walked down the hall.
How long must I endure this?
Ciel's thoughts were interrupted by a gentle buzzing sound coming from his own pocket. Puzzled, he reached in and found his phone. The small screen had lit up and was showing a series of numbers.
Remembering what Alice had told him about the technology, he hit a button with a green symbol on it and held the device up to his ear. "Hello?"
"Young Master." Sebastian's voice came through the receiver. "I have concluded my investigation into Miss Alice's past."
Ciel smirked. "And?"
"Ciel!" Alice's voice carried across the courtyard easily. "Just being in the building isn't enough! You have to attend classes!"
When he turned to face her, Ciel was met with a familiar, yet unwelcome vision. Alice's hair was styled like Lizzies, complete with a ribbon wrapping around her forehead. This has to stop.
"I know you aren't used to this, but at least try." Alice continued. "What kind of Earl runs away from challenges?"
"What kind of Lady lies to relatives?" Ciel smirked when the bravado drained from her face. "You didn't bring us here out of curiosity, did you?"
"I told you, Ciel." Alice tried to sound cheerful, but her voice betrayed her nervousness. "I think there might be demons in this city."
"Anyone in particular that you suspect?" Ciel crossed his arms over his chest. "Sebastian checked your phone records."
Alice gave him an amused smile. "Well then, he must be better with technology. That's pretty advanced."
Ciel's cheeks burned with his anger. "You've been receiving calls from a number that doesn't exist! Who has been calling you?!"
"You know who." She said calmly. "You've guessed, haven't you? And you know him." She chuckled, her friendly demeanor dissolving into condescendence. "He's the one who pointed me in the right direction to find you. In return, I brought you here at his request."
"Why does he want us here?"
"Someone should be dead." She explained. "He wants you here because your circumstances are similar. Parents are dead. You should have died, but something intervened." She smirked. "A butler who's too good to be true. You've felt his presence."
The butler.
"And he wants us to investigate?" Ciel asked.
"You're catching on." Alice nodded. "He can't intervene since no one's going to die. But you are in a unique position."
"Why would I help him?"
"Because if you don't, he'll come for a visit." She smiled sweetly. "Isn't it better not to have him over?"
Ok, I know Alfred was working for the Wayne family before Bruce's parents died, but I had to change that for the story. Sorry.
Finally, the story is going somewhere. I got chills writing that last exchange between Ciel and Alice.
