A/N - Hi again everyone. This is from episode 13 "Hit and Run" and there are a few short things. I did deviate a little and put a small Abby/McGee scene in there, that I felt was not quite enough in the episode (I am not a typical McAbby writer so I am not sure if it is going anywhere or not, just wanted to let y'all know). Thanks again for reading and following the story! Leave a review and let me know what you think!
Chapter 17 – Hit and Run
Before the episode
Ziva woke first. She smiled a little and inhaled deeply as she felt Tony's arms clench a little around her. They were tangled certainly. One of her legs was over the top of his and the other between. Her arm was draped around him and her other one under his side. His arms were encircling her and keeping her safe and warm. Tangled was a good thing right then. She snuggled deeper into him and he lightly kissed her forehead, waking a little as she snuggled him.
"How's my ninja?" he asked sleepily, without opening his eyes and scattering kisses on her forehead and face in between his words.
"Better, I think," she said honestly and found his lips with hers.
Suddenly her skin felt a little heated, though it had been touching Tony's skin the whole time. There was the softest of moans that escaped her lips as Tony found the pulse point on her neck. She inhaled and pressed her body into his and he got the message, though he knew they would probably be late for work; but that didn't matter to either of them.
Crime Scene
Ziva and Tony were late and had to arrive at the crime scene in one car. Ziva was nearly laughing about it and Tony was staring at her, distracted as he was by her presence.
"DiNozzo, David, nice of you to join us, come down here," Gibbs called, sounding impatient and angry.
They exchanged a look at went down and were thoroughly surprised that Gibbs said nothing about their tardiness and were sure that something was coming to them before the end of the day or case.
In the Squad Room
Ziva, Tony, and McGee were in the middle of discussing Abby and her sorrowful mood. It was clear that Ziva and Tony were a little tense at the moment, but McGee already understood that it was because Tony had gone to Israel with Ziva and they had shown up late to work already that day with smiles on their faces. McGee knew that it was now more than obvious what was going on and he knew, without asking that they were waiting for their boss to comment on it openly.
"You got something against dogs, DiNozzo?" Gibbs said, interrupting their conversation.
Tony and Ziva flinched and turned to look at their boss. "No, boss. I love all canine beings… especially the dogs that you love," Tony said, trying not to irritate his boss at all, especially today, after so much was very obvious.
"Good," he said with a hard glance at Tony and then he turned to McGee without another word. "Give me an update, go."
Tony and Ziva exchanged another nervous, yet relieved look, since their boss was still clearly not bringing it up.
While McGee and Gibbs Are Out
"Tony," Ziva said, walking up to him and leaning on his desk.
"Ziva," he replied quietly.
"Don't you think that Gibbs will say something?" Ziva asked. "I mean… a lot has changed…."
"But in reality nothing has changed and he knows it… but I did think Gibbs would say something by now," Tony said with a frown. "It makes me worry."
"Say something about what?" Abby asked, coming into the squad room. "What would Gibbs comment on?"
"Nothing, Abby," Ziva said with a slight smile as she stood up from leaning on Tony's desk. Abby's eyes were scrutinizing them, even though she wasn't on her best today.
"Something about you two going to Israel together? Something about you two showing up late together? Something about you two sharing a car ride this morning together? Or something about you two spending an awful lot of time together outside of the office? Or perhaps something else that I don't know about?" Abby asked.
Tony shrugged but didn't respond. Ziva just went back to her desk and began working again, suddenly quite able to focus on the case now that someone was questioning her about her personal life. Abby's eyes narrowed, but Ziva, even though Abby felt like a sister to her, wasn't willing to talk about it with Abby until Gibbs had approached them or they had approached Gibbs and there was just too much going on with the cases coming in and the Bodnar case still active.
"Ziva, Tony, don't just me out!" she demanded. "I'm not in a good mood today. Would you just appease me and tell me what is going on?"
"No," Tony said quietly. "There's nothing to tell anyway."
"There's something to tell," Abby said. "A year ago, do you think Ziva would have invited you to go to Israel with her? Or if it was the other way around, do you think she would have let you live after suggesting something like that? No, I don't think so! That means that something big has changed with the two of you! And you do seem to be spending an awful lot of time together! I might not know what is going on, but I have a pretty good idea, I would just rather hear it from you two than hear it through the grapevine or be left to my guesses."
Neither of them replied to her and she left the office space angrily and went back down to her lab. There was nothing more she could say and she was fuming at these two. They were both a little nervous for what Abby might have planned next, because they knew she would plan something to figure this out for sure.
At the Bingo Game with Abby and McGee
Abby told him the entire story, everything that there was to tell about her first case, which was, of course, unofficial. There were tears in Abby's eyes as she told the story, but McGee listened to the whole thing, despite her tears, because he knew that she needed to get through this story and tell the whole thing to its end, whatever that end was.
"Have the bad things been outweighing the good things all these years and I just never noticed?" Abby asked, her voice filled with emotions and tears filling her eyes.
"What do you mean?" McGee asked.
"Well, all I ever wanted was to help people… with the truth…. And I've done that, but then bad still won sometimes and then… I just want to file it away… like it never happened… so I can go back to being happy," Abby tried to explain.
"There's nothing wrong with that," McGee insisted.
"Yes, there is, McGee" Abby argued, "because then sometimes the Cutrights and the Dunns they keep fighting and no matter what the truth is and sometimes Ricky never gets to see her grandpa again… if the bad outweighs the good, then that means that I'm not enough."
"Abby, listen to me," McGee tried, but Abby cut him off.
"No, I'm… and if I'm not enough McGee, then… then why even try? I'm…." She threw her hand up and turned to walk away.
"Wait! Abby!" McGee said. "Abby!"
McGee went after her and caught her, pulling her into a hug and holding the crying Abby tightly, wishing to find some words to say to her. He wondered what he would write in a book, but nothing came to his head just then and he just continued to hold her close.
Ziva and Gibbs Before Arrest
"How are you?" Gibbs asked.
"I am fine," Ziva said, which was her normal response.
"Don't give me crap, Ziva," Gibbs said shaking his head. "Give me the truth. How are you?"
"I am fine, Gibbs, really," Ziva said.
Gibbs parked the car outside of their suspect's house and looked at her. She was looking away.
"Your father was killed just over a week ago," Gibbs said to her.
"Yes, he was," Ziva agreed.
"You buried him," he said.
"Yes, I did."
"You went to Israel."
"Yes, I did."
"You came home and were late to work," Gibbs said.
"That was a small mistake," Ziva admitted. "But I am fine, I promise you Gibbs. I am really alright."
He nodded his head, seeing that either she was fine or she was just trying to end the conversation before Gibbs could go deeper. He wasn't going to push if she wasn't going to offer information. It wasn't fair to her to force her to say something that she wasn't ready to say on her own.
"Let's get our suspect."
