Chapter 3
The next day, Dimitri woke up and jumped when he saw little-Rose kneeling at the end of his bed. She wasn't crying, so that was some progress. Still, Dimitri though she was there because she missed her Dimitri.
"Rose, are you okay?" He asked.
She didn't respond in any way. He sighed, got up and cleaned himself, and then came out from the bathroom and saw that little-Rose wasn't on the floor anymore, but instead she was on the bed hugging one of his pillows. He heard a sound and stopped walking.
Little-Rose was giggling.
Though Dimitri was unsure that actually was the case. Rose had her face completely buried on the pillow and he could hear noises that sounded like giggles. He listened more closely. Yep, giggles, definitely. Inevitably, Dimitri found himself smiling in spite of himself.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
Without invitation, the door opened itself a few seconds after, and a face peaked through the door.
It was Abe Mazur.
When he was that his daughter was in the room he smiled knowingly, as if he'd known little-Rose was going to appear at Dimitri's room in the morning. He came in without asking and – nodding briefly to Dimitri – sat on the end of the bed, about 6 feet apart from the girl.
"Rose?" He said.
Little-Rose stopped giggling – which disappointed Dimitri a little – and dropped the pillow. Then she turned slowly until she was facing Abe.
The man opened his arms and Rose moved slowly until she was in Abe's chest.
"Daddy." Rose said – slowly – and Dimitri could hear the smile on Rose's face as she talked.
"Hello baby." Abe said as he hugged her daughter very tightly. When he released her he put a small kiss in her forehead. Dimitri turned away, feeling like he was invading their privacy. Then he saw as Abe picked Rose in his arms, and he took the now smiling girl downstairs. And Dimitri too – after a few seconds of standing like a fool – followed them downstairs.
On the first floor he saw that Janine was awake and preparing breakfast. Abe, quietly, put Rose on the floor in front of the right side of a white wall, and the little girl grabbed some colors and started to draw on the wall. Meanwhile, Abe had reached Janine – who was distracted with whatever it was she was doing – and put his arms around her waist from behind, and bend over to kiss her on the neck. Janine jumped and gasped in surprise and then started laughing. She then turned to face her husband – or boyfriend, Dimitri didn't really knew if they were actually married – and they started kissing.
Dimitri cleared his throat – very, very quietly – and then looked away once more. His gaze found itself searching for Rose. When he found her he stopped for a few seconds, focusing on her face. The little girl apparently wasn't bothered by her parents' activities. When he started remembering his Rose, he noticed various differences. Little-Rose's cheeks were more rounded than his Rose, and a small blush was always covering them. Her eyes were a lighter shade of brown also, and there was a gleam in them he couldn't identify, as if she had a big secret only she would ever know.
His thoughts were interrupted by Abe clearing his throat.
"Hey Dimitri, why don't you take Rose to the park for a while? You know she likes it… there." Abe said without losing sight of Janine. Both of them were panting a little and had a special look in their eyes.
Dimitri hurriedly kneeled at Rose's side and warned her he was about to touch her. Rose dropped the crayon she was using and turned to "look" at him – but her eyes never actually met his. Then she pointed her tiny finger to the wall.
In there he saw that she had drawn a picture of a clock. Then he realized it was the clock they had on their living room. He wondered why Rose had bothered in doing what she did. Leaving those thoughts behind, he grabbed the girl in his arms and sighed in relief when she didn't scream, yell or cry.
Without a word they left the house.
Outside of Rose's home, on the porch, Dimitri stopped walking. Where the heck was he supposed to go?
Rose seemed to notice he had no idea where he was headed, because she started pointing where to go. It was quite entertaining actually, and they got lost. Dimitri's fault. He took a wrong turn – Rose got mad when he did, because he had received a slap on his arm as a punishment for the mistake – that had gotten them to arrive at the park a few minutes later than when they were supposed to.
At the park, he saw many children playing and running. He put Rose on the floor, but the little girl only put her arms around Dimitri's left leg. Dimitri didn't know what to do so he grabbed the girl in his arms again and walked towards a bench. There he sat Rose down next to him, but the girl got off of the bench and started moving and playing with the dirt. Dimitri relaxed for a good 15 minutes.
He closed his eyes, and his mind started to wonder off.
He could feel the sun on his skin, could even feel the life in it. He breathed and could smell of pines and dirt. He sighed, happy he was alive. Wait a second – he was dead, in a sense, just no longer strigoi.
But still he was grateful he was allowed to feel like this again.
He opened his eyes and saw that Rose was looking at him. Looking at him. He could actually see her eyes. He stopped breathing.
Her eyes were beautiful, and he didn't know what but there was something in them that could have kept him watching those windows if what had happened next hadn't happened. Rose realized what had happened and she didn't react well.
Dimitri saw her eyes widening at the same time she inhaled fast. The she turned her eyes to the ground as she gave a small scream, and like that she threw a rock at him.
Dimitri was shocked. The rock never hit its destiny (one of Dimitri's eyes), obviously, but he was still surprised.
Very surprised.
And a little hurt.
He held the rock in his right hand for a long time.
Then he turned to look back as he heard steps coming towards them.
Before he could look at the person he heard the voice. It was a girl. And the voice was very familiar.
Then he saw her.
Tall, skinny, green-eyed, blond, and with a kind smile on her face.
"Hello Dimitri" Said a 17 year – old girl.
In front of him he recognized the Vasilisa Dragomir.
From his world.
