Chapter 2

*..*..*..*..*

'Where am I? Is it a dream?'

Usui wondered as soon as he regained consciousness. The severe pain he felt instantly ended his wondering; he wasn't dreaming in the slightest. Why couldn't he move his body? Why was he on the floor? It's cold… and wet...

It was wet by a liquid that had a scent of... metal.

'Is that blood? My blood?'

Usui asked himself, which led him to remember what happened; he ran away from an armed murderer. He must have gotten shot. That explains the sharp pain in his abdomen.

' Misaki… what happened to Misaki?'

As soon as Usui wondered, he heard Misaki's voice. Not afar. Her voice seemed like a cry. Was she begging?

"Please help him, please! He bled a lot!" Misaki cried. The source of her voice was behind Usui. She was behind him.

The place echoed with a strong slap voice, indicating that whoever Misaki was begging, slapped her.

'I need to move!' Usui incited himself

"You'll shut up, or I'll rip your throat out" said a resonant voice of a man.

Usui felt anger boil within him. 'No, he can't hurt her!'

Usui barely crawled towards the source of voices. He saw a muscular, huge man. He couldn't see Misaki. The man's size blocked the sight of her. Usui lowered his gaze. He saw Misaki's legs behind the man's legs, and then, her legs were lifted into the air. Gasps voice was heard. Usui's eyes widened; the man was strangling her!

"Let go of her!" Usui shouted at the top of his voice.

Hearing the noise that came from the injured body, the man released Misaki. She fell on her knees, coughing badly.

The criminal made his way towards Usui, glaring at him without any hint of mercy on his face.

The criminal used his fist to bear down on the bullet wound slowly, and said: "well well, our dog here dares to bark at his master".

As if torturing was the criminal's best hobby, he pressed the wound harder, enjoying Usui's breathless yelps. The blood gushed from the wound

"Gaaah!" Usui yelped loudly when he couldn't bear it anymore, making Misaki shiver. Her worry became uncontrollable.

*Ring* *Ring*

*Ring* *Ring*

The pleasured facial expression of the criminal turned into an irritated one; the ringing of his cell phone interrupted his fun.

"This call saved you. Learn to be a good pet next time" The criminal said as he left the place in order to answer the call

"Are you okay?" Misaki asked anxiously, hoping to receive an answer.

" I didn't... get you into this. It's the… roller-skates" Usui answered, breathing heavily. His voice was surprisingly still although his whole body was trembling due to the pain

"Don't try to be funny at such a time!" She exclaimed.

"What's wrong with that?"

"Okay, you look awful, no fan girls will chase after you anymore, and your face is filled with bruises" She said indignantly, trying to bury her worry somewhere, but it wasn't possible.

Usui wheezed as he tried to suck the pain up, and then he said:"That wasn't...funny"

"No no! Don't close your eyes. I'll tell a funny joke. Just stay with me" Misaki cried, panicking as she saw him blacking out.

"Hehe, it's nice to know you care about me" Usui said, smiling after he had opened his eyes.

"You moron! If I wasn't chained to the wall, I would kill you!" Misaki rebuked. She couldn't maintain the frown she wanted to have; the relief of hearing him talking overcame her desire to kill.

"Don't... hit an injured person. That's bad "Usui murmured. His voice has become weaker. He began to feel numb.

"Stop joking. Open your eyes..." She demanded although she could feel he wasn't joking. This time he seriously blacked out.

Footsteps were heard approaching.

The owner of the steps appeared. He was the same man who was threatening Misaki a while ago. He's one of the assassins that kidnapped them. He bent down to check Usui's pulse. A smirk appeared on his face as he said:"His heart is barely pulsing. He'll die at any moment"

'He can't!`

Misaki thought frantically. She was disgusted by the smile of the criminal. He smiled as if people's lives were toys.

The criminal made his way towards Misaki. He held her chin up in order to make her look at him.

"Are these tears? Then is that brat your lover?"

Misaki didn't answer him. She shot anger and hate at him through her eyes. She wouldn't look at him if he wasn't forcing her to face him. She felt her stomach churn due to the disgust she felt.

"Don't give me this look. I'll grant you a favor; I'll give you something your dead lover can't ever give you" the criminal said slyly and turned his words into action.

The moment the heat of his breath brushed Misaki's neck, he received a knee on his abdomen, forcing him to recoil from her.

After recovering from the pain he received, he got steamed up and began to kick her ruthlessly against the wall, saying angrily: "You... Don't worth a thing!"

"Stop playing. Is this what you called me for?" A stern voice came from the entrance.

The criminal turned his attention to the man at the door, and said:"Yes. They witnessed killing that guy. Should I kill them?"

"Why didn't you get rid of them already?" The man at the door exclaimed, disbelieving his accomplice's rash behavior. After a second thought, he said:" Don't waste your bullets; you'll need them. Let nature do its work. Take what you need. We must catch the flight"

The accomplice at the door looked at Usui, and then said:"Chain this guy too. Ensure they'll never manage to flee" After stating his note, he left.

Usui was dragged across the floor, and then his wrist was chained to a cuff. The cuff was fixed in the wall opposite where Misaki was.

Misaki was trying to endure the pain she had due to the brutal kicks she received. Amidst her heavy breathes, she wondered what 'let the nature do its work' meant.

*..*..*..*..*

Fifteen slow, nerve-racking minutes elapsed. Misaki didn't know they were fifteen minutes; they felt like ages to her. Around her, there was nothing that could indicate the actual time. She didn't know what kind of place she is in, she didn't know why there was many chains fixed on the walls, she didn't know what will happen to them, but what scared her the most is: she didn't know if Usui is still alive or not.

She was dwelling on a world of confusion and quandary. She wanted to find a way to wriggle out of her cuff as soon as possible, for if she was free, she might be able to do something! To help Usui before it's too late, to escape from this predicament!

However, it seemed impossible.

The slight motion of the figure in front of Misaki attracted her full attention. Usui was stirring.

Usui opened his eyes slowly, his vision was blurry, but he could see Misaki sitting on the floor. She had an unreadable expression on her face.

"What are you thinking about?"

"You're alive!" Joy rushed into Misaki's heart.

"Apparently… despite the terrible pain in every inch of my body" Usui replied in a half joking manner.

"Listen, I heard people pass by warning each other from a typhoon. I heard them say it'll hit the area soon. They were evacuating the area" Misaki started informing. Although she was happy that Usui is alive, it wasn't the time to chat happily. She continued talking:"I tried to shout in order to get help, but they didn't hear me. We're chained. Next to you there is a hole which will only let water in. The door is locked and we'll drown" She stated the horrifying facts.

Misaki had no idea why there was a hole. It wasn't a break in the wall. It was designed to be there. It seemed similar to those holes in the doors of solitary prison cells, which are used to pass food. But the hole wasn't in the door. It was in the wall. Misaki didn't think of the place a lot. What mattered is: finding a way to escape.

"Then I need to get you out of here" Usui mumbled. Misaki couldn't hear his voice.

Usui's sight roamed around the place although his condition didn't allow much of flexibility. Misaki's sight wandered around too. They attempted to find a way to flee, but it seemed impossible. No matter how much they racked their brains, they couldn't find a solution.

'No, this can't be the end'

Usui told himself, refusing to give in. Not when giving in meant that Misaki might lose her life.

'There must be a way to get out!' Usui thought, and then he spotted something. There was an old metal, rusty closet. The door of it was broken. What attracted Usui's attention is what was on the top of the closet.

"There's a hammer above that closet. Can you reach it? I want it"

Misaki looked at where Usui was looking, and said: "It's next to me, but too high to reach"

Usui mustered his strength and kicked a wooden box, sending it from his side to hers across the room. The swift movement shot pain through his body, but he endured it. What kind of room they are in is a mystery. It seemed like an old storage, but the chains indicated it was used for other purposes.

Misaki climbed up the box, trying to reach the hammer using her free hand. She stood on her tiptoes, causing her chained wrist to be grazed by the handcuff as she tried to reach higher. She threw the hammer to Usui as soon as she got her hands on it, and asked:"What'll you do?"

"Promise me you'll close your eyes until I tell you to open them" Usui demanded calmly. He seemed to be thinking carefully about something.

"Huh?" Misaki uttered; not certain what he wants from her, or what he intends to do.

"Promise me!" Usui shouted as loud as he could. It wasn't the time to neither hesitate nor rethink about anything. He didn't know for how much longer strength would remain within his body; he had to do something this instant!

The water began to enter the place, wetting Usui's body, for he was lying on the floor next to the hole. The salty water got into Usui's wound, refreshing the pain he felt.

'God! It stings!'

Usui frowned, trembling with pain. The water's entrance aggravated the situation.

"I... promise... I closed them" Misaki obeyed. She didn't bear seeing Usui suffer anymore.

Usui held the hammer firmly. He tried his best to sit up. He ended up kneeling; the wound didn't allow enough flexibility to sit.

Usui tried to reach the chain that held his wrist captive. However, he couldn't bend his body enough to reach it. He thought of the box he sent to Misaki, but he figured it would be useless; he wouldn't be able to climb up the box, for he had only one free hand, and a deeply wounded body, let alone having to sit on the box in order to reach the chain. It was impossible for him.

Usui knew the option that was left for him is much more painful than trying to kneel, but that didn't matter now. Misaki is in danger, and he is the one who caused her to be endangered. He has to save her. He shouldn't have brought her to the forest to begin with. It was his entire fault and his alone.
