Blizzardstar was vaulted awake, her breath coming in gasps. She leaned to the side and half-flew, half-fell off of the tree branch. Feathersky darted forward and helped steady the new leader on her feet.
"Come on, let's get you back to the clan," Feathersky allowed her to lean on her.
Blizzardstar gladly did so as the prophecy tore through her mind. She stumbled and the medicine cat caught her. Mosskit stayed close by, his green eyes showing his worry.
I can do this. I'm the leader.
As they neared camp Blizzardstar took a deep breath and shoved away from the medicine cat, sending the world spinning around her. She stiffened, regained her balance, and entered the camp, hauling herself up to the top of the largest boulder.
"All cats old enough help their clan gather around the leader's stone!" her voice was soft at first but quickly grew in strength. She watched for the first time as a true leader as he clan gathered, "First of all I did get my nine lives and my name. Now we need to figure out a name for the clan. Any suggestions?"
Stormpaw waved her tail and Blizzardstar nodded for her to speak, "Why don't we call the clan StoneClan, because we live in a stone camp?"
"Or ForestClan, because Forest hit his head against the stones to find the camp… and we do live in a forest!" Bonekit blurted out.
Several heads began to nod, but Sunkit, wanting to outdo her brother, squealed, "No, that's horrible! Why don't we call it PawClan because my paws are awesome!?"
Blizzardstar glared at her daughter, "I think ForestClan fits. Now we have three cats that need to be warriors. Bandana, Song, Forest, please come up here."
The two ex-kittypets and the rogue jumped up the rock and stood in front of the young leader.
"Bandana, Song, and Forest, do you both promise to honor StarClan and the warrior code and to protect and defend ForestClan with your life?" Blizzardstar asked.
"I do," Bandana's voice boomed.
Song replied with a quieter, "I do."
Forest nodded, his warm amber eyes glowing, "I do."
"Then from now on Bandana you will be known as Dovetalon. Song, you shall be known as Songheart. Forest from now on you shall be known as Forestpath. May StarClan bless you in your life here."
Blizzardstar touched all of their noses with her own and the three new warriors joined the others.
Feathersky began the chant and everybody quickly joined in, "Dovetalon, Songheart, Forestpath, Dovetalon, Songheart, Forestpath!"
"Now I know that you are new here and to life in a clan, but I trust that you will all know enough to train three of our young apprentices. Forestpath, you will mentor Wolfpaw. Please teach him your determination and quiet strength. Dovetalon, you will mentor Emberpaw. Please teach her your fighting skills. Hazelpaw, your mentor will be Songheart. Songheart, please teach Hazelpaw your way with words. For the other apprentices Cloudwhisker will mentor Graypaw. Please teach Graypaw your great hunting talents. Breezeheart, you share Bouncepaw's enthusiasm and therefore you will mentor him. Stormpaw, for now we don't have a warrior available so I and any other available warrior will teach you until another cat joins the clan," Blizzardstar smiled, "And the deputy of ForestClan will be Breezeheart," Blizzardstar sighed, all of her strength gone, "Clan meeting dismissed."
She jumped down and curled up in her nest in the nursery.
Breezeheart woke her up, "Blizzardstar, would you like me to organize some patrols?"
"Could you wake me up any sooner?" Blizzardstar got to her paws, "Yes, of course. Have Cloudwhisker lead a border patrol with Graypaw, Songheart, and Hazelpaw. Ban- Dovetalon can lead a hunting patrol with Emberpaw, and Wolfpaw. Could you train Bouncepaw today in camp and keep an eye on the kits? Forestpath, Stormpaw and I can go on another hunting patrol."
Breezeheart nodded and exited the den; Blizzardstar heard her give the orders as the white leader quickly groomed her pelt and exited the den. The rest of the patrols had already left; Stormpaw was busy talking with Rainkit and Sunkit while Mosskit was busy asking Feathersky questions about her herbs. Bonekit and Crystalkit watched eagerly as Breezeheart taught Bouncepaw how to aim his paw-swipe and make it faster. The two were practicing in a sandy area of the clearing just below the medicine den. It had quickly become the preferred place for the mentors and apprentices. Forestpath sat to the side of the camp, his expression guarded.
"Stormpaw," Blizzardstar called.
The dark gray apprentice rushed over to her leader's side. Forestpath waited for a second before following the patrol out of camp. The autumn leaves rustled, creating a brilliant contrast with the blue sky. Stormpaw scented the air.
"I think I smell mouse," she whispered.
"A whole nest of them, do you smell the milky scent on the trail?" Forestpath asked.
Blizzardstar was impressed, now that the warrior mentioned it there was an unusual scent.
"Okay Stormpaw, what do you think we should do?" the white leader asked.
The apprentice paused, rehearsing a plan in her mind, "Forestpath's pelt can blend into the forest so he can track it until he finds the border, we'll follow his scent trail and then surround the burrow, finding all the exits in the process."
"Good job," Blizzardstar grinned, "Forestpath?"
The dark tabby nodded and soundlessly slipped into the undergrowth. Blizzardstar waited until his scent faded into the distance before flicking her tail for Stormpaw to follow her. His scent trail weaved through the forest until it stopped around a bend. Blizzardstar had to dig her claws into the ground to keep from running into him.
He nodded to a strange-looking twoleg den.
"It's a barn, a place where twolegs store some of their larger animals. Sometimes there are barn cats, sort of a rogue kittypet mix. They get fat on the rich helpings of mice that live in the barn," Forestpath explained, "But this one looks abandoned, a nice place for the animals to shelter but I doubt there will be too many mice."
Blizzardstar sniffed the air warily, "No scent of twolegs, I guess it would be safe to go in."
She stepped over the broken down fence and peered into the barn. Forestpath was correct, the barn was clearly abandoned. Small spots of golden grass were showered in certain corners but several timber beams that stretched below the roof had fallen. And the pitter-patter of foot beats made Blizzardstar's mouth water. She opened her mouth to call her companions, but realized that they had followed her in.
"Free for all?" Blizzardstar mrrowed, "Whoever comes back with the most wins!"
Stormpaw was the first to rush away, following the pitter-patter of little mouse feet. Blizzardstar grinned at Forestpath before running in the opposite direction. The white she-cat dropped down into a hunting crouch and stalked after a mouse until it had scampered into a small pile of the golden grass in the corner of the barn. Blizzardstar pounced on it and another mouse when scampering out of the pile. Without a moment's hesitation she sent the first mouse flying into the wall, hoping to stun it, and leaped after the other one. She gave it the killing bite as it let out a shrill squeal. As she spun around to take care of the first mouse she came face-to-face with Forestpath, the given prey hanging from his mouth.
"Hey! That's mine," Blizzardstar attempted to snag it out of his mouth with an unsheathed paw.
He jumped back, "Finders keepers!"
A growl sounded from behind Blizzardstar.
"You two just made enough racket to scare off all the prey from here to the camp!" Stormpaw hissed.
Blizzardstar self-consciously licked her chest fur, aware that she had acted like a kit fresh out of the nursery instead of the leader that she was.
"Maybe we should head over to the pond?" Forestpath suggested.
"Look at the huge mouse I caught, does it count as two?" Stormpaw asked.
A creature three times the size of an ordinary mouse hung from her jaws. Forestpath's fur quickly rose.
"That's no mouse, that's a rat. Luckily I don't smell any around here so hopefully there is only a couple. But still, we need to go," Forestpath shivered.
Blizzardstar quickly nodded and jumped back over the fence, glad to once again be in the forest. Forestpath with 'his' mouse and Stormpaw with her rat and other mouse halted behind her.
"Okay, the pond would be east of here near the birch border," Blizzardstar grinned before taking off.
Forestpath suddenly pulled ahead, dodging the trees in front of her. Blizzardstar stretched out her legs, reaching to take bigger strides. She bolted forward, the pond appearing in the distance. Suddenly the dark brown tabby was infront of her as her endurance wavered. He dipped his paw into the water and splashed her face.
Blizzardstar snorted, "Hey!"
Suddenly it seemed as if the brown tabby had opened up to her, his shy outer shell revealing his rather feisty, joking, and friendly nature.
"I thought leaders were suppost to be fast," he purred, "Didn't you get a life for speed?"
"I got no such thing," Blizzardstar snorted.
Stormpaw rolled her eyes, finally joining them, "Here you both go again, acting like kits."
Blizzardstar turned on her, "I am your leader!" Suddenly she burst out laughing, "Okay, fine, you've got a point. Who's up for water vole?"
"I think we scarred them all away," Forestpath said mournfully.
"Oh," Blizzardstar's smile fell.
Forestpath dipped his paw once again into the water, but this time did not shower the other cats. Suddenly he dived in, the murky water engulfing him.
"Forestpath!" Blizzardstar yowled, pacing the shore.
His head broke out of the water and he steadily swam to shore, spitting out a large gray fish at her paws, "But it didn't scare the fish away."
Her crystal blue eyes narrowed, "Couldn't you tell us where you were going?"
He put on a kit-like expression, making Blizzardstar's expression soften.
"Does it taste good?" Stormpaw asked.
A purr sounded in Forestpath's throat, "Some cats think so, others don't, I personally, am the only cat I know that likes it. Grayson- excuse me, Graypaw and Hazelpaw never quite acquired my taste."
Blizzardstar stepped forward, "Mind if I try it?"
Forestpath dipped his head.
She took a nibble, "Wow! That's good!"
"Really?" Forestpath asked.
"I mean, it's different, but it has a nice flavor."
Stormpaw stepped forward and took a bit but then reeled back, "Yuck! How can any cat like that!?"
Forestpath laughed, "Don't say I didn't warn you."
"Can you teach us to swim?" Blizzardstar asked.
He nodded and walked back into the water. For now the dark tabby warrior was out of his shell, and Blizzardstar was truly happy as she plunged in after him.
A/N: So LOTS happened in this chapter. Bandana, Song, and Forest got their warrior names and all the apprentices finally got mentors! Keep watch for the next addition... I have a feeling it will come sooner than usual! OOh... and who thinks that some kitty's in love XP
Q: This is more of a question for the next book, one of the main characters warrior name. What do you think a good warrior name would be for a russet she-cat named Wildpaw?
a) Wildcreek
b) Wildspirit
c) Wildshadow
Any other suggestions just send in a review! You'll probably see it as a poll soon!
Remember to review and head over to my forum! :D
