Chapter 9
*..*..*..*..*
Usui began to stir, regaining consciousness. He looked around; wondering why he was laying on an empty alley. A flurry of wind made him close his eyes due to the dust it carried.
He wondered what happened, and then the pain in the back of his neck told him the answer, bringing the memory of what happened back to him. in that instant, Misaki was all that clouded his mind.
Usui fished his smart phone out of his pocket, hoping that Misaki still had her hairpin on her hair.
Usui belongs to the walker family, a family that is targeted by many criminals for their tremendous wealth. Many criminals wanted to snatch an amount of their fortune. There have been kidnapping and threatening incidents repeatedly; therefore, they have their own gadgets, especially made for them.
The hairpin Usui gave to Misaki is equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System) function; such small devices would help at similar situations. Usui was intending to track it by his smart phone.
By a quick tap, he saw the location of the GPS mark and recognized the place. His smart phone rang before he could save any data. An unknown number appeared on the screen. Usui answered immediately, for the caller might be one of the criminals who had abducted his Misaki.
'Don't even think of calling the police. I'm watching you'
Alerted, Usui looked at his surroundings, searching for whoever is watching him.
"Where did you take her? What do you want from us?" Usui asked, still spinning round in order to spot the caller. All that surrounded him is buildings. There was no sign of any moving figure; it must be late at night.
Without getting any answer, the line went dead, much to Usui's irritation.
Seeing that Usui is being watched, there isn't any way for him to follow Misaki without exposing the existence of GPS equipment with her, which makes Usui lose his only advantage.
Usui's smart phone rang once more, and he answered instantly.
'you played a game with us and caused capturing three of us, I thought of killing you both, but then, I found out your identity, maybe you can make up for my loss"
"What do you want?" Usui asked sternly. His heart skipped beats; they are the same criminals that got them into that nightmare. Assassinates that took no second of hesitation before killing. Just what did he get Misaki into?
"Direct, aren't you? Walker Takumi'
'Walker? How does he…?' Usui wondered, trying to digest what this meant. Do they want money?
"Let's make a deal".
"First, Is Misaki alright?" Usui asked coldly. He had attempted to be as calm as possible in order to think rationally. Whoever that criminal is, he is ahead of Usui. Seeing what they did in that forest, Usui was terrified. Terrified of what they might do to Misaki.
However, Usui had to keep his rage in.
"Usui…" Misaki talked, giving Usui a bit of relief.
"Did they do anything to you?" It was amazing how in a split second Usui's voice changed from pure coldness into a gentle, concerned, and worried voice.
'I'm fine'
An uncertain smile appeared on Usui's face. Misaki's voice seemed alright, yet he was still worried; how long will she be alright?
'Enough of your lovers' chat. I want that hotel's worth of cash. You know what hotel I'm talking about. I want it in two days"
"Wait. There's no way I can bring that much of cash within two days. You know about that nature disaster. The hotel is under repair!" Usui objected, trying to buy time. That hotel's worth is millions of dollars. Talk about impossible. Even if he wanted to sell the hotel, it'll be impossible to find someone who would buy it within such a brief time.
. Usui's legacy is only that hotel along with scattered bank accounts. All what his accounts contained doesn't equal the wanted amount.
"I'll give you a hint: the diamond chandelier"
Hearing that, Usui's eyes widened. Is this really happening? He gritted his teeth in irritation.
'I'm being sincere by giving you choices. It's either you get me the diamond, or the cash'
The line went dead. Usui was about to throw his phone due to how he was fuming with rage, but figuring that it is the only contact way, he controlled him self.
There are rumors that the diamond chandelier is a chandelier which is filled with diamonds as a decoration. They say it exists in the ball room of the raven castle in Britain; The walker family's castle. Therefore, many thieves tried to burgle the castle in order to lay their hands on the diamonds.
However, no one saw the diamonds, mainly because the diamond chandelier is not a chandelier. It is a name given to a diamond necklace. Whenever anyone wears it, it shines in a way that is similar to the huge chandeliers in royal ball rooms.
And that necklace, was a property of the deceased mother of Usui; Patrica. It was handed down from her to Usui. Before she died, she ensured her butler; Usui's father, will find a way to give the necklace to him. Usui retrieved the necklace from his adoptive parents after he had moved out of their house.
The issue is… the value of the necklace is nothing compared to the hotel. The criminals will be disappointed if they found out it's a mere necklace instead of a bunch of diamonds on a chandelier. Usui didn't want to imagine them hurting Misaki due to their disappointment.
The location of the GPS mark felt familiar to Usui. A company, but what was delighting about it: The one who built the company is a talkative neighbor that Usui helped once.
That neighbor kept bragging about how perfectly built that company is and how he did a perfect job designing it.
That man was overly proud; he thought everyone likes engineering. He handed Usui a blue print of the building. Usui thought the man is totally out of mind, but now, he never felt more grateful.
It was as if fate led a crazy engineer to him just so he'll be beneficial in this situation.
As soon as Usui returned to his Condo, he began the searching process in order to find the blueprints, which god-only-knows where they were ditched. He dearly hoped he didn't throw them in the trash.
Usui breathed a sigh of relieve when he finally found them. What next?
Usui sat in bafflement. Even if he studied the building, and knew the exact location of Misaki, he can't take any step without endangering her; he is being watched.
There was a million thought in Usui's mind. It was clouded by the quandary he is in;
There is no chance of telling anyone about what is happening. It's a big risk. Usui wouldn't risk Misaki's well-being to seek help although he was sure the police will believe him and work with him; after that incident on the island, it isn't hard to believe they are targeted again.
On the other hand, complying with the criminals' wishes and giving them the necklace will also risk Misaki's life. They will certainly think Usui had fooled them, and he didn't want to think of the consequents.
Usui racked his brain all night long, and no solution came in order to aid him.
*..*..*..*..*
One in the afternoon. Eleven hours are left for the meeting between Usui and the criminals.
Murderous people… They are assassins. Usui couldn't guarantee they would return Misaki safe to him. They might as well kill them both.
Usui had to do something, to reach them before they reach him.
Usui knew Misaki's location, but only knowing it isn't going to bring her back safely. He had an idea in his mind, but nothing he could think of would work if he didn't get rid of the unseen accomplice who's observing him all the time.
If Usui didn't get rid of him, he won't be able to make any move with out endangering Misaki further.
Usui made his way towards an old, abandoned studio. He looked at the surroundings of the studio. It was a deserted area; no one was there.
Usui broke into the studio through a broken window, and then he shouted:"You hear me, don't you?!" Usui's voice echoed through the place. It was certain that his voice was audible to anyone who might be outside.
"You are a gang of criminals! It doesn't matter if I bring what you want or not. You'll kill us anyways!" Usui shouted angrily, but somehow, his voice sounded desperate.
"I… I can't take it anymore! I rather die before I witness her death!" due to how loud Usui shouted, his voice became hoarse. If anyone heard it, he would believe Usui is crying.
*Bang!* echoed through the place.
Usui fell on the parquet floor. A large pool of blood formed under his head.
A woman entered the studio hastily. She looked at Usui in order to check if he is dead or not; she certainly heard a voice of a gun shot. Usui was lying on his abdomen; one side of his face was obvious, and it didn't seem hurt.
She bent down to roll Usui's body over in order to enable a better sight of him, that's exactly when a smirk appeared on Usui's face.
Usui instantly headbut the woman, making her sway. In reaction, she shot randomly in the air.
Usui held her wrist, disarmed her, and then by a swift movement, he turned her over, fixing her face on the floor while seizing her by the arms.
"Since I couldn't reach you, I had to make you reach me" Usui said, and then he threw her into an old locket after he had gagged her mouth.
"I never thought you are a woman though. You used a gadget in order to alter your voice, didn't you?" Usui said as he brushed his cloth.
Usui abandoned the gun he used to shoot himself in the same closet he left the woman at. The gun wasn't considered a danger threat; it's the 'toy' Yuichi gave him; the child he and Misaki met at the amusement park.
Usui took the real gun from the woman, allowed her to talk and then asked:" where are they? If you dare to lie, I'll make sure to return and kill you"
"I don't know" the woman said timidly, afraid he might shoot her for her ignorance about Misaki's location.
Usui huffed and headed out. He wanted to find a car to borrow.
Everything in the street was strangely calm. However, to Usui, everything felt crazy; he is racing time; He had to reach Misaki before they try to contact the woman and find out they lost their contact with her. That wouldn't be so rewarding.
Usui saw a man standing besides what seemed to be his car. The man was hunting for something for a while, seemingly his key.
Usui observed silently. The moment the man found his keys and opened the car, Usui hit him strong enough to push him aside. Usui entered the car, and then aimed the gun at the peeved owner of the car.
"The keys!"
The man threw the keys to Usui, his anger was replaced by the fear of being killed. Usui switched on the car's ignition, and then drove off.
Usui arrived at the company's building in record time; the location of the GPS mark. He entered the company quietly, trying to look as normal as possible. He was lucky it's a big company. There was no way any employee would know all the employees there. Therefore, no one doubted his identity.
According to the blue prints, he figured the only suitable places to hide Misaki are either the roof or the storage. He headed towards the ground floor; the storage. Many employees entered it and left it, which meant it was frequently used and not suitable to hide anyone.
Usui went up in the elevator. After he had arrived at the top floor, he climbed the stairs in order to reach the roof.
Usui knitted his eyebrows; the door of the roof is open. What is that supposed to mean? If they had Misaki there, they would surely close the roof or at least make someone watch the entrance.
Usui stood in the middle of the empty roof, racking his brain. Where would she be? There isn't any other place in the company that would allow them to keep a hostage. He fished his smart phone out of his pocked and looked at the GPS mark. It pointed at the company without any doubt
He took a step towards the door, intending to leave the roof.
*squash*
Something smashed under Usui's shoe. He took a look, and it was the hair pin!
Usui cursed under his breath; if the hair pin is here, it means he have no idea where Misaki is! And since he can't reach her immediately, they might kill her as soon as they find out they lost their contact with their accomplice!
Panicking, Usui ran towards the elevator. He started the car and drove, weaving in and out of the traffic as fast as he could. He had to reach the tied accomplice and force her to answer any call she might receive while he thinks of another plan.
Usui's smart phone rang. He answered it while holding the steering wheel by one hand. He wished from the deepest of his heart that whoever the caller is wouldn't be the kidnappers, but his wish was short lived.
'Aaaah!'
A scream that shattered Usui's heart was heard, followed by: 'That's what she gets for your try to track us and your little tricks. Stick to the deal. Twelve at midnight, at the old factory of concrete'
'What did you do to Mi.."
*crash*
A crown congregated around two cars in order to see if the people inside each one were okay. A woman who seemed in her forties emerged from one of the cars. She swayed, but one of the citizens caught her in time.
'An ambulance is on its way' the citizen reassured the woman.
"Is he fine? It's my fault. I'm the one who hit him" She said. She didn't seem to care she would be blamed. She only hoped that whoever was driving the other car is fine.
'He's unconscious!' A voice shouted. Another voice shouted:"Don't move him! Let the paramedics do their job!'
'He seems young. Poor thing. I hope he becomes okay" an old lady said.
The unconscious Usui was laid on a stretcher. Seemingly he hit his head; a wound in his forehead was oozing blood. Although he is in an unconscious state, he was mumbling something.
'M..Misa…'
*..*..*..*..*
Usui knitted his eye brows; he began to stir. A sever pain in his head welcomed him as soon as he woke up. He wondered what happened. He was about to get up, but a hand was placed on his chest, making him return to his lying position.
"We're almost at the hospital. Stay still" the owner of the hand said; a paramedic.
"Hospital?" Usui wondered, why are they taking him to a hospital?
"You got involved in a car accident. Don't move 'till we make sure you're alright" The brown haired, paramedics said.
'Car accident?" Usui repeated calmly, trying to remember what had happened. Everything rushed into his memory in an instance.
"A cell phone… gives me a cell phone!"
Usui demanded as he rose. He didn't allow the paramedic to force him to lay down anymore.
The puzzled paramedic gave him his cell phone. Usui looked at the clock. It's still 11 in the evening, but the time was running out. He tapped on few numbers, made a call, and then deleted his call from the call log list.
"Stop the ambulance" Usui ordered sternly. The paramedic objected. He had enough of Usui's interruption. He only stopped the bleeding on Usui's forehead, he had to check if there was other injuries that needed immediate help.
Usui stood and opened the ambulance's door.
"Stop it or I'll jump!"
Alerted, the paramedic tried to grasp usui, only to have him self thrown at whatever equipments were in the ambulance.
Hearing the noise, the driver asked: "what's happening?"
"Stop the ambulance!" The paramedic said, afraid that Usui would jump; he seemed insane. And so, Usui headed to his destination.
