Chapter 17

Fionna grumbled to herself as she stomped away down the pink themed hallway. Those two just did not grasp the severity of the whole thing! The world was going to end! END! And they just wanted to waste their time searching for a book when they had a perfectly good anti evil sign to use?! She just couldn't take it.

The only thing she wanted to do now was talk with Cake and spend time with her. Her sister. How long had it been since she had gone adventuring with her? Since she had had a nice refreshing cup of tea with her? It felt like years, but Fionna knew it had only been a couple of hours.

What would Cake say when she found out that the Lich was back? That quite possibly, the world as they knew it was going to end? That they might never see each other again… Fionna wiped her mind blank. Not thinking helped her think. And right now, she wanted to think about not thinking.

It was a short walk home, and the different terrains flew by like wind over a field. Soon, Fionna was standing in front of the door, about to knock. The door flew open before she could get the chance, and Cake was wrapping her arms around Fiona over and over again. "Oh girl, it is good to see you! What happened?! What is it that Gumball had to tell you? Are you ok?"

Fionna nodded, "I'll explain Cake. I'll explain. Can you just," Fionna was at a loss for words. The world was suddenly crashing down, the full weight of everything crushing her. She started to cry, the tears flowing down her cheeks.

Cake hugged her even tighter, "Fi honey?" Fionna sniffed, "Please Cake, just go make some of your special tea. Please." Fionna looked at her sister's worried face, trying not to cry as much as she felt like she wanted to. Cake managed a small smile, "Ok Fi… ok."

She stretch them through the doorway, and into the living room, planting Fionna firmly onto the couch. "Be right back sugar." She disappeared into the kitchen. Fionna wiped at her eyes, trying to make herself stop, but failed miserably.

Even when Cake came back, Fionna was sniffling and tearing up. Cake handing Fionna her cup of tea, setting her own on the table. "So, Fi… what is the matter?" Fionna took a sip, and looked at her sister.

"Prince Gumball had found a sign in the forest… it was from the Lich." Cake, who was about to take a sip from her own cup, slammed it down, her eyes wide, "What?! But we kicked his butt! He should be dead!" Fionna nodded, "That's what I thought too Cake, but he's back. And he's threatened Aaa."

Cake jumped up, "Well, we can kill him this time! Just grab your sword and we'll go kick his buns!" Fionna shook her head, "Gumball says he's stronger. Like, undefeatable. He thinks that stupid book can save us, and so does Marshall, and," Fionna looked across at Cake, seeing her confusion. In a couple of sentences, she summed up the day before and that morning.

Cake pursed her lips, nodding, "So this anti Mark is supposed to defeat the Lich once and for all, but you guys don't know how it works and only the Book can decode it?" Fionna looked down into her cup, swirling the last bit of her tea.

"Pretty much. But, I think we can use the Karm without understanding all that language, but Gumball and Marshall Lee are too scared." She downed the rest of her tea, putting the cup down on the table.

Cake nodded, "I understand why they are scared. Fionna, you know you can't just go running into every situation blindfolded. Finding the book does sound like a good idea…" Fionna began to protest, but Cake held up a finger, "But I'm not saying it's the best solution." Fionna frowned, "Then what is?"

Cake shrugged, "I don't know. But I do know that you guys will stop the Lich at all costs. I know not to worry. I'll be fine, Aaa will be fine. You'll be fine." She smile, a comforting thing. But Fionna knew better. She folded her arms, clutching at her stomach as if that would relieve the pain.

"Cake, I had my croak dream."

She didn't know where it had come from, hadn't even been thinking about it at the time, but suddenly, it was out there. Cake's eyes grew, her mouth dropped open, and a small squeak came out. Everything was silent. And that was enough for both of them.

Fionna hugged Cake, sobbing into her sister's fur, while Cake held her close. She couldn't hear her crying, but felt her body shake with half concealed sobs. The tea was forgotten, the book was forgotten, everything was forgotten as the two cried. This was going to be the worst conversation ever.

Cake blew her nose, the last traces of tears already gone. "Are you sure baby cakes? Are you positive?" Fionna nodded, swallowing hard, "The Cosmic Owl was there and everything. It was my croak dream Cake. I'm going to die. And Marshall is going to watch." She didn't cry this time. She didn't have any tears left.

Cake sighed, looking sad, "I am so sorry Fi. Have you told Marshall?" Fionna shook her head, feeling numb. Cake sat close, holding onto Fionna hand, "Maybe it was just a Revolutionary dream. Maybe he was just trying to tell you something."

"Yeah, that I'm going to die," Fionna said sourly. Cake fell silent. It had been a while since Fionna had heard Cake silence by something. It didn't sit well with her. Cake fiddled with her fingers, her brow furrowed. "But, you can't die. You're my sister. I won't let it happen… you…"

Fionna nodded, squeezing her hand. Cake was fine with her demise when the dream came to her. But, Fionna didn't think she approved of her having the dream. Having that future event cast down in stone for her, Fionna only being fifteen.

Cake suddenly turned to Fionna, eyes wide, "You need to go tell Marshall." Fionna's breath caught in her throat. She couldn't! It would kill him. And it would only make him more protective of her. If the time came, she wouldn't be able to go near the Lich.

"No Cake, he… I can't do that to him." Fionna gulped, remembering, with a shiver, his screams. Cake saw her shake, and instantly dropped the subject. "Well, you could at least go and help them try and stop the Lich. Storming off wasn't the best thing for you to do."

Fionna shrugged, "I just really needed someone close to talk to. There is just so much going wrong." Cake put a hand on her shoulder, "Things are always going wrong honey. It's just how we deal with them that matters." Fionna closed her eyes, massaging her temples. She wasn't dealing well at all.

And Marshall must have been just as freaked as her to find that they couldn't do anything yet. He probably needed her just as much as she needed him. And if they were going down, they were going down together.

Fionna sighed, standing up. "Cake, no matter what happens, I want you to know that you are by bestest most closest friend in the entire world, and I love you dude." Cake smiled, tears springing to her eyes. All she could do was hug Fionna and ask, "So what are you going to do?"

Fionna smiled, "I'm going to defeat the Lich."
