I guess this end part was inspired by those countless flying scenes you see in the Maximum Ride series…and also by that fic (The Sky's the Limit) which I'll have to get back to someday.
It turns out that it hurt, and the detective of the east was reduced to biting his tongue until it bled by the sheer pain of it all. The painkillers just made his mind all foggy so to stay awake he had to concentrate on the pain, making it much worse.
However, there was one pair of tentacles that he wanted to keep – the wings. Although they would be more of a hindrance than a help to him, if the two could create something to help him with the high altitude he could probably do without transportation.
Haibara shook her head at this, and slid in a snarky response, "Since when were you such an environmentalist?"
The atmosphere created by the two arguing somehow put Generic at ease about the detective and also made him jealous, but he didn't care about the jealousy. He had finally reunited with Sherry after it seemed like they could never meet again.

A few days later…
Shinichi was finally – after almost a year or two, everyone had noted – back at school, albeit with some strange slashes in his uniform. (After getting some cells from Shinichi's head, the scientists were able to repair what had been done without the use of any more metal.)
"Hey, lover boy. Where have you been? Ran's been despairing about you," Sonoko snarked after she and Ran were pulled away from anyone else's sight. Hearing this comment from her friend, Ran protested but she was ignored.
"I can't tell you because there were too many cases to solve and in too many locations," Shinichi told her. "But there was one thing I got as a souvenir of all my detective work which you'll never believe." He unfolded his wings. "What do you think?"
Sonoko gave no response, as she had fainted.
Meanwhile, Shinichi fiddled with the pill, safely stored in a plastic container. He still couldn't make up his mind, but it seemed that Ran was coping with it all.

The high-altitude mask was almost complete, so Shinichi dropped by Agasa's place and poked his head into the basement. There he met Ladrafiefr, who had pretty much been turned into Agasa's and Haibara's assistant. Without his tentacles, he was no threat.
"Here you go," the alien told him, shoving a surgical mask – at least what appeared to be one – towards him. "Since my shuttle really is ruined this time and that girl's confiscated it, I can't get back to doing my job so…it's your fault."
Shinichi had already gone to attempt flying by the time the last three words were said, so he never heard them.
