There was an odd silence that surrounded our carriage to Hogwarts that I hadn't ever associated with the Cullens. Even the almighty Emmet was unusually silent, staring sulkily out of the window. They all knew what had happened with Harry and the others and, despite everything, I appreciated their silence.
I sat with my head pushed against the glass, watching as the green scenery blurred past until my eyes began to water. I could tell Edward was worried about me; every five minutes he would rub my shoulder. I didn't really want to talk about it though, the sooner we got there, the better it would be. That's what I told myself anyway.
We arrived in Hogwarts after several hours of awkwardness, and I couldn't have been gladder to see the old rusty platform. I remembered the time that I had met Cedric there and winced as though I had been punched in the gut.
Edward noticed.
"You ok?" I didn't answer, just nodded absent-mindedly, "I'm gonna go get our cases. You can go, I'll catch up with you." I nodded again and within a moment, he was gone with only a slight breeze to indicate his movement.
There had been a time when I would have done anything just to smell him, now there was such a sense of disattachment between us I wondered if I would ever feel like that again.
I began to walk through the crowds until I reached a carriage pulled by large majestic horse-like creatures and climbed aboard one. For one dreadful moment, I thought that no-one would get on with me, but then-to my surprise- Rosalie stepped on and shut the carriage door.
"We need to talk." She told me, her lips pursed. She sat on a velvet coach, it wasn't hard to imagine her on the cover of a 'vogue' magazine.
"What about?" I asked, genuinely curious. I sat back on my chair, and found myself nervously playing with my hands, a habit I had picked up over the summer.
"You're not happy." She told me, "Don't try to deny it, it's something I relate very closely with."
I took a deep breath, "Well, my friends aren't really speaking with me right now, so I guess I could see where you might have picked that up." I didn't mean to sound sarcastic, but I guess there was a part of me that was furious with Harry about ditching me.
"That's not what I meant." She replied, idly playing with her perfectly polished nails. Suddenly she sat up, her face frighteningly close to mine, "Look, I don't want my brother to get hurt."
It took me a second to reply, "I don't understand..." I started.
"You need to sort out your feeling because for Edward you're the endgame. He wants nothing more and you need to accept that." What she was saying wasn't making much sense, I knew how Edward felt. I felt that way too, didn't I?
I was about to question her when we reached the front gates and she had already climbed off, "Think about that." She left me with that.
I climbed out slowly watching as students milled out around us, I had only stood for a couple of seconds when I was suddenly greeted with a cold hand to my back. Edward,
"You alright?" He asked me, gazing down at me with his golden eyes.
"Yeah, I guess this place is just bringing up some memories." It wasn't exactly a lie.
"Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts!" Dumbledore finished his speech and with a cheer from the school, the plates filled with food. I watched as the goblets in front of the Cullens filled with blood.
"Awesome." Emmet said, "Though I will miss the chase." He winked at Rosalie who placed a hand on his chest and whispered something in his ear to make him grin widely.
"I think it's nice and civilized," Alice commented with her dainty voice, she lifted her goblet taking a neat sip. I also noted how much fuller Jasper's goblet was and smiled a little at the way he eyes it greedily.
I glanced around, my eyes scanning the room for my -old- friends. The Cullens and I had an area of bench that no-one dared enter, we weren't even split into houses. Finally I spotted Harry and Hermione in a crowd of gingers and smiled a little. They all seemed to be having fun. I looked down at my empty plate again. I wasn't hungry, my stomach was already filled with lead.
"Hey Bella!" I looked up to see Jake sprinting towards me with the rest of the pack at his heels.
"Oh god." Edward breathed, taking a large gulp of blood. Jacob and his pack sat next to the Cullen's, to the extreme distaste of Rosalie.
"There's so much food." Paul grinned, as they all filled their plates. I smiled a little at their enthusiasm.
"Sorry, we're late." Jake said to me as he grabbed a muffin, "Couldn't figure out the whole wall thing so had to sprint here." He spoke through a mouthful of muffing, I bit back the laugh at the reaction of the Cullens.
"You ran the entire way here from London?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, don't look so shocked. We are werewolves." He replied, turning back to the plate. I let out a short laugh.
I definitely had strange friends.
