Sophie holds the picture in her hand and sighs, 'I know it's your mum'
'Can you tell me something more? I need to know… is she alive?' I plead.
'I don't know much, Jamie' Sophie apologised, 'but I'll tell you what I know. Your mother was on the run for 13 years from us, ever since you escaped from the lair when you were five. She went on the run then and led us as far away from you as possible. She joined a group of people and they called themselves 'The Paladin Resistance' who were a group of humans and jumpers who fought to protect your species. Until, one day we – I mean the paladins found their hideout and everyone found was killed on the basis of paladin resistance or paladin resistance by association.'
My face fell, 'so she is dead?'
'That's the thing, everyone in there was reported dead but then I was in the control room, the room that you were in with the monitoring equipment and I saw her. She's not dead but she's a hard woman to catch or track down.'
'Do the others know that she's alive?' I asked with obvious desperation in my voice.
'No… I never reported seeing her. They all think she's dead' Sophie sighed; I can tell she has been sitting on this information for a while.
'So, does the paladin resistance still remain?' I ask.
'It does but there are various sightings of members that escaped the paladin attack and others; it's nearly worldwide. More and more people are finding out about jumpers and paladins and the war.'
'Should we be worried about that?' I ask concerned.
'Not today' Sophie smiled just passed me and I turned to see that Alice and Griffin had returned.
'Where's David and Millie?' Alice asked blowing into her hot Starbucks cup.
'Crap' it dawned on me, 'she's in a bed near yours, upstairs'
'So, where's David?' Sophie asked.
'Probably with her' I guessed.
'Alright, let's go' Alice motioned us in the direction of the stairs. We walked a few paces before realising that Sophie and Griffin hadn't followed us.
'Are you guys not coming?' I asked with a faint smile knowing the answer already.
'I think we need a bit of time to ourselves' Griffin suggests while holding Sophie's hand tightly resembling the way I hold Alice's.
'I understand' I smile, 'thank you for everything, both of you'
'No problem' Griffin smirks, 'you never would have done it without us, we know'
'Urgh, I gonna miss you two' Alice runs and hugs both of them. I hug them too and whisper 'thank you' into Sophie's ear because Sophie has given me hope. Hope that I can find my mother and that she's alive.
After our goodbyes Griffin and Sophie walked out of the hospital and disappeared. I'm going to miss those two but I'm happy that they are getting some alone time; I just wish I knew what happened between them.
'I wonder what happened between those two' I casually ask Alice as we make our way upstairs.
'I asked Griffin about it and all he said was that Sophie was the one person that made him feel that he lived a normal life. It has been a long time since he has felt love like that before but when he found out she was a paladin and didn't tell him; he was devastated. He met her again in secret and asked her to leave the organisation for him but she said that she was in too deep to leave. Apparently though, her mother knew about their relationship and said that if she left with him then they'd both be in danger but if she stayed then she would protect him. Griffin didn't know that before so he was hateful towards her until they finally talked it out in the reception, rekindling their love'
'Woah, you and Griffin talked about a lot' I laughed. 'I'm happy their story ended with them together'
'They're like us… inseparable. Oh so, what did Sophie say?' Alice asked remembering why I wanted to speak to her.
'My mother's alive! She was caught being part of a paladin resistance but she got out alive and she's still on the run' I said.
Alice's grip on my hand tightened, 'at least she's alive… don't worry, we'll find her'
I smiled at Alice as we entered Millie's room and David was next to her, they were laughing.
'Hey guys' I said to David and Millie.
'Jamie and Alice, hey' David said.
'Thank you Jamie, for bringing me here I mean' Millie smiled.
'No problem, David would have done the same for Alice' I said smiling.
We sat around talking for a while and it made me realise that I want nothing more than to spend time as a four. As much as I enjoyed spending time with Griffin; I always loved spending time with David and Millie, it was peaceful and right now, peaceful is what I want and need. It's what Alice needs and she's all I want.
'We should go' I said aloud which received puzzled faces so I continued. 'The paladins are momentarily defeated, we can go anywhere'
'We don't have anywhere to go?' Millie questioned.
'That's the beauty of it' I said, 'we can go anywhere and just live for a while before things get heated again'
'Who knows? They might never get heated again' David hoped while looking at Millie. I hope they don't heat up again but I'm not that naïve.
'Where you want to go?' I asked.
'I want to go back to Paris, it was before all this mess started' Millie said with a sigh.
'Then let's go' I said with a grin.
'What? Right now!?' Alice asked.
'Well what are we waiting for?' I asked them.
'What about your mother?' Alice whispered.
'I'll find her' I said with assurance, 'but until then, I want to travel the world with you, David and Millie'
Everyone smiled and nodded in agreement.
'So, where's the nearest airport?' David laughed.
A smile smoothed on my lips as I said, 'a couple streets from here, we could even walk but I think it would be easier to-' I grabbed Alice's hand and jumped us to the airport, a few moments later David and Millie arrived through my jump scar and our adventure begun. Again…
