As Castle and Beckett drove into the City of Algonac the next morning, they were both kind of shocked at how small the city really was. It looked more like a town than a city. It wasn't small to the point where there were miles and miles in between neighbors, but it also wasn't anything like being in Manhattan at all. Castle looked over at Beckett, "You don't think it is going to smell do you?"
Kate looked over at him, "Uh... no? It's the middle of winter Castle. What could it possibly smell like?"
Castle shrugged a little as they pulled into the Sheriff Department. Kate turned to look at Castle, She was already in 'Detective Beckett mode', before she could even speak Castle held a hand up, "I know, I know. Behave." Beckett smirked but nodded as they got out and went inside the building.
A Sheriff's Deputy was working inside and she looked up, "Hi, I'm Deputy Evans. May I help you?" She had long blonde hair and brown eyes and looked like she was about 5'7 if she was standing.
Beckett held up her shield, "Yes, please. I'm Detective Kate Beckett, N.Y.P.D." She gestured towards Castle, "This is Rick Castle, We're here to see Sheriff Reynolds please."
Deputy Evans nodded and stood up, "One moment please, "Detective. Mr. Castle." She disappeared behind a door into another room and a few minutes later, she came out with an older gentleman. He had a thinning hair line and looked to be a little over weight and he was about 6' even.
He shook Beckett's hand and then Castle's, "Detective Beckett. Mr. Castle. It's a pleasure to meet you both. I'm Sheriff Reynolds. Now what brings you two from New York to Algonac? I'm sure you're not here for the water recreation considering the waterways are all frozen."
Beckett looked around the room, "Actually this is an open investigation, is there somewhere we could talk privately?"
"Of course, Detective. Right this way." He lead them to a small conference room and gently shut the door, "Coffee?" Beckett and Castle both agreed and thanked him.
Kate opened her folder, "Sheriff, we were hoping you could help us." She pulled out some photos as she spoke, passing them to Reynolds, "This woman was found murdered a few days ago. We know her as Miranda Storme, which we also found out is an alias, and Ava Richardson."
Reynolds looked over the photos and nodded some, "Yes I remember of her. Of course that was Algonac Police Department when she went missing and the case was open." He pulled up a report on the computer in the room. "It says here that her parents filed a report that she was missing when she didn't go home after an outing with her boyfriend. The police questioned Mr. Wayne but, they couldn't prove that he did anything wrong and the case eventually went cold with no leads. Her parents still live in town." He wrote down the address on a sticky note. "They should be home, Mrs. Richardson usually is. Just go right out on the main road, which is M-29. Take that through town until you get to the stop light, and make a right there. That puts you on State St. Follow that down until you come to a street on the left, it isn't very far down and turn there, that puts you on Worfolk. Then follow that all the way to the end, there will be a curve just follow that around and that puts you on Edwards. The house will be the second house from the stop sign on the right hand side."
Beckett nodded and stood up, "Thank you for seeing us on such short notice. We'll be in touch soon." They all shook hands again and Beckett and Castle left.
The drive to the Richardson's house was very quiet. The house was a normal ranch style house. Castle parked in the driveway and they exited the car and made their way to the door and Kate knocked, "Castle please..."
"I will Kate. No messing around. I promise."
An older woman, who looked to be in her mid-sixties answered the door, "May I help you?"
Beckett held up her badge, "Ma'am, I'm Detective Kate Beckett, this is Mr. Castle. We were wondering if we could have a moment of your time please?"
Mrs. Richardson looked at her for a minute, "You said Detective? Does Sheriff Reynolds know you guys are here?"
"Yes ma'am, he does."
Mrs. Richardson nodded some and let them in, " My husband isn't home. Can I ask what this is about?"
Castle and Beckett exchanged a glance then Beckett looked back at Mrs. Richardson, "We uh... I'm sorry, there's no easy way to tell you this, but we found your daughter's body a few days ago."
"My daughter? Ava? Are you sure?" She was trying to contain her tears but a few slipped out. Castle handed her the box of tissues off the table. She smiled thankfully at him and wiped her face off.
Beckett nodded some, "Yes ma'am. I'm sorry."
Mrs. Richardson wiped her face again and slumped back into the chair she was sitting in, "May I ask how?"
"She was apparently taking care of another woman's child. We we're wondering if you knew why she was in New York?"
"New York? You're from New York?"
Kate nodded, "Yes ma'am. We work at the 12th Precinct in Homicide."
"I have no idea why she was there. Ava was a sweet girl, an A student, then she met that Wayne boy. He was always into trouble, that one was. The last time we saw our daughter, she had been fighting with Mitchell, and he called and wanted to take her out and apologize and make is up to her, and she never came back home."
Beckett nodded a little, "Anything else?"
"Not that I can remember, no."
Beckett nodded some more and shook her hand, "Thank you so much for your time Mrs. Richardson." She and Castle got up and they exited the house. Back in the car Kate looked at Rick, "So... We have a suspect."
Rick nodded, "The same one we came here for; that we still have no idea where he is."
Kate sighed, "Right. So we have nothing."
"We'll find him Kate. You know we will."
Kate nodded, "Back to the Sheriff's Office. We'll call the boys on the way to update them." Rick nodded and they left the Richardson's house and they went back to the Sheriff's office. They still had more questions than they had answers and it was frustrating.
