Getting better at this uploading thing. Only took me six years to get the hang of it. Unfortunately, now that I have chapters to upload I will be without internet. Will this story get done!? Oh well, here is a new chapter for now. Enjoy!
Sitting at her desk, head down, Kagura was beginning to fall asleep. She sleepily raised her head in hopes of waking herself up a bit more, but it was no use the poor girl was dog tired. She stayed up later than usual working on her homework, and she woke up early to hopefully catch Emi, Rin, or Kaiya before school started to double check her work. It had been twenty minutes since she arrived and there was no sign of any of the girls. Well chances are Rin and Emi will get here together. Who knows when that will be? And Kaiya will show up around her usual time I guess. Tired of sitting, she stood up and did some stretches. The sudden blood flow energized her a bit, just in time too because Emi and Rin walked through the door together as she suspected.
She gave a big wave, which the other girls returned. "Oi," Kagura said excitedly.
"Good morning, Kagura-san," Emi and Rin said in unison as they approached Kagura's desk.
"Can you guys help me out with last night's homework," she asked as she reached into her backpack and took out her notebook.
"Well, that's a sentence you don't hear every day," Rin said with much amusement in her voice. "Kagura-san asking for help instead of asking to copy."
The young athlete chuckled a bit and scratched her head. "Yeah, well, my mom's pressuring me to get serious about school. Copying isn't really serious is it?"
Rin nodded in conformation. "I suppose not," she said with a smile.
Emi grabbed the notebook out of Kagura's hand. She looked over the work Kagura had done and was pleasantly surprised. "Looks like you don't need much help."
Kagura beamed with pride. "Really? I did it right?"
"Well, there are some you did wrong. But there's only about three or four that I notice, and they're simple mistakes," Emi said as she flipped the pages over and skimmed what was written. The other tall girl grabbed the notebook and looked it over as well.
"Wow. Good work. Are you sure you didn't copy?"
"No, I swear I didn't." Kagura couldn't help but let out a goofy smile. She was filled with excitement because as she worked on the practice problems she felt like she understood them, though she wasn't sure if she was tricking herself. It seemed as though she was making progress after all. Kaiya walked in at that moment, glanced at the group of girls gathered around Kagura's desk. "Good morning, Kaiya," Kagura said happily. Kaiya looked as if she was about to say something, but instead she just shook her head and made a beeline to her desk. The athlete was confused, she was certain that she had settled everything with Kaiya the day before. During the tutoring session, Kaiya seemed to be back to her normal self.
"Earth to Kagura," Rin said as she waved her hand in front of the girl in question.
"Huh? Oh, sorry." Kagura grabbed her notebook out of the other hand of Rin and walked over to Kaiya. Rin looked over to Emi, who gave a confused shrug. Turning her attention back to Kagura's destination, Rin sat down and stared intently at Kaiya, leaving Emi with nothing else to do but watch as well.
Kagura pulled up a chair, and sat down in front of Kaiya's desk which caused her to give the athlete a strange look as Kagura dropped her notebook down in front of her. "Can you help me?"
There was a moment before Kaiya picked up the notebook and looked it over. "Why is it you only come to me when you need help?"
"What?"
"You've been ignoring me for about two weeks and you finally talk to me because you need help," she said, not taking her eyes off of Kagura's work. "Even before, you only really talked to me when you wanted to copy my homework."
"That's not true." Kagura tried thinking of times when she had interactions with the girl without needing her help. "We all used to eat lunch together on the roof sometimes."
"Yeah, well, you only did a few wrong here. Good job." She handed the notebook back to Kagura. "I guess you're going to leave now and go back to the other two."
Kagura sighed. "Kaiya, it's not like you're not getting anything out of tutoring me now. You're getting paid you know."
Kaiya looked away with anger, and said quietly, "I don't want your money."
"What do you want? I wouldn't feel right not paying you." She was at a loss. Kaiya was acting like all was forgiven and put behind them last night, even though really Kagura was the one who should've done most of the forgiving.
The girl in front of Kagura looked over to Rin. Her former best friend? Still her best friend? She didn't know what their relationship to each other was at the moment, and her guilt was overwhelming. Once Kaiya turned her head at the girl, Rin had to look away suddenly feeling guilty too. Kaiya couldn't remember the last time her and Rin went this long without talking, probably before they became friends in elementary school. They were always in the same class, but never really talked to each other until about the third year in. Since then, they seemed to talk to each other every day, until now that is. "Like I said yesterday, she still thinks of you as her best friend," Kagura said, earning a disbelieving glace from Kaiya.
"Would you go on a date with me?"
Kagura looked around, making sure no one heard what Kaiya had said. "No," was the stern answer.
Kaiya shrugged. "Thought I'd ask. I guess you can go back to your friends."
Feeling defeated, Kagura got up from the chair and walked back over to Emi and Rin. Rin was in the process of getting up. "Where are you going," the other two girls asked at the same time. There was no answer from her as she walked towards Kaiya.
Taking a seat at her desk, Kagura looked over at Emi who was sitting on the desk. "What is doing?"
"Putting Kaiya in her place, I think. Out of all of us, she knows how to handle that girl the best." Emi hopped off the desk and grabbed her backpack off the floor. She took out the homework she did the night before. "Ok, let's see if I can help you with the questions you missed."
Four desks down, Rin sat in the same chair Kagura had sat in when she was talking to Kaiya. "I'm popular this morning," Kaiya said. "You go two weeks without talking to me and now this."
"Can you blame me?"
There was a small pause before Kaiya answered. "No, and that's the upsetting part."
"You haven't talked to me either."
"I emailed you an apology…"
Rin furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "Really? I barely know how to use that thing. An actual apology would've been appreciated."
"Well I gave you one already. Learn to use your email," Kaiya said angrily.
The taller girl just stared at Kaiya. When eye contact was finally made, Rin spoke. "Can we stop being at odds with each other? We've been friends since elementary. Let's not ruin that over some…girl." Rin couldn't help but laugh. It sounded silly. Two best friends arguing over dating a person. A person who Rin determined she didn't even really have a crush on. She really didn't want to lose her best friend of five years for that reason.
"You left me alone, Rin. I didn't know if you were going to even speak to me again-"
"I was waiting for an apology from-"
"I gave you one!"
Rin threw her arms up in the arm. "I didn't know that!" She stood up. "Kai-chan." Kaiya couldn't help but feel on the verge of tears. Rin hadn't used that nickname since the start of junior high, when they met Kagura and their friendship was drastically changed. "You're still my best friend if you want to be. Even if you chose not to be, I'll still help you if you need me to. As already determined, I'm not good with email, so just come talk to me if you want. I'm only two desks behind you." She walked to her desk.
That's just the kind of person Rin was. She could hate every fiber of your being, but she'd always be willing to break her back for you. Kagura watched as Rin walked away from Kaiya, hoping the conversation turned out for the best. "They'll be fine," Emi said, catching Kagura's attention. "Best friends fight. That's why they're best friends because they overcome it." For all their sakes, she hoped Emi was right.
