I am sorry it takes me so long to update but I appreciate those of you who continue to read my story. Thank you!
Twenty-four hours earlier…
Sophie had been pacing around the apartment for what felt like hours. The day had finally come for her little girl to take her driving test. Sophie had wanted to be there for support but Audrey, who was already anxious, had asked her mother to stay home knowing she would only make her more nervous. Sophie couldn't help but agree, so Nate took Audrey to her test. Sophie was about to try calling her husband for the tenth time in twenty minutes when the front door flew open and in walked Audrey. She was trying to keep a straight face but after a few seconds a huge smile spread across from ear to ear.
"I got it! I passed! I got my license!"
Audrey threw her arms around her mother, and Sophie wrapped her arms around her daughter right away.
"Congratulations darling! I am so proud of you. I knew you could do it."
"Thank you mum. Here, look. I think the picture came out okay."
Audrey let go of her mother and handed her the temporary copy of her license.
"Audrey, the picture came out beautifully."
"Thanks mum."
"What do you say your father takes us all out to dinner tonight at your favorite restaurant to celebrate?"
"I say that's a perfect idea. Wouldn't you agree dad?" "Like I would have a choice… Just kidding. It sounds perfect. But just the three of us."
Sophie and Audrey shared a knowing look before Sophie went to work her magic on her husband. Before long he had agreed that the team, as well as Sophie's sister and parents could attend the dinner as well. A few hours later Nate had finished getting ready so he went down to his office while Sophie and Audrey were finishing getting ready. Sophie was just about ready when she heard a small knock on her bedroom door. She smiled because she knew it could only be one person and went to open the door.
"Come on in my dear. I am almost ready." "Mum, may I ask you something? It's about Aunt Sonya." "Sure, you can ask me anything. Why don't we sit down?"
Sophie sat on the edge of the bed and Audrey sat besides her.
"Is Aunt Sonya married? Or has see ever been? I was wondering and I wanted to ask her about it but for some reason I thought it might make her sad."
"She was. He died about a year ago. I'm not sure how because Sonya won't talk about it and my mother said it is for Sonya to tell me what happened when she is ready. What I do know is that they were high school sweethearts. They were in love since the first moment they saw one another."
"Much like you and dad."
Sophie smiled at her daughter.
"I don't know about that. Your father was married when we first met. Speaking of your father, he is waiting for us."
As Sophie got up and started to gather her things when her daughter's words stopped her for a moment.
"I am not saying that he didn't love Maggie, but I am more than sure he did feel something for you when he first saw you. And in time I am sure Aunt Sonya will open up and tell you what happened to her husband. You may fight, but at the end of the day you know you love one another and you are there for each other."
Sophie walked up beside her daughter and kissed her on top of her head.
"How did you get so wise?"
"I got it from my mama."
Sophie just laughed and pulled her daughter from the bed, ushering her downstairs to find Nate so they could all leave for the restaurant. They had taken Sophie's car because Nate's was being detailed, and when they arrived at the restaurant everyone was there except Sonya.
"Mummy, where is Sonya?" "I just received a call from her before you arrived, Sophie. She was on her way to the restaurant when her rental car broke down. She is about fifteen miles away. Your father is going to retrieve her."
Audrey stepped out from behind her mother after overhearing the conversation.
"I'll go get her! As you know, I got my license today!" "Yes, I heard my sweet girl but perhaps it would be better if your grandfather goes." "Come on, please. Mummmm please."
Audrey gave her mother the eyes that she knew would make her mother agree to whatever she was saying. Yes, she was defiantly her mother's daughter.
"Oh, alright. But be safe! And call me once you have picked up your aunt so I know when you're on your way back. Do you understand?" "Yes mum!"
Audrey kissed her mother on the cheek, took the keys from her hand, and rushed out of the restaurant, almost knocking her father down in the process.
"Hey, where are you going? Sophie, where is she going?"
"She is going to go get Sonya. Her car broke down on the way here."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"Yes, she will be fine. She knows to drive safe."
"That's not what I mean Sophie."
Nate saw the fear come into his wife's eyes the moment she understood the meaning of his words. In the excitement she has forgotten, and he couldn't blame her because there has been brief moments when he had forgotten himself.
"It's okay. Everything will be fine. I'll go with her."
Nate gave his wife a quick kiss and ran outside to catch up with his daughter. But he was too late. As soon as Nate stepped out the door he saw his wife's car being rammed by a black SUV, right on the driver's side. No matter how hard he tried he would never get that imagine out of his head.
