Scarlett Fitz POV
"We need to do something about A."
Charlotte and I looked at Avalon in surprise. "I know we do." Charlotte said. "But why the sudden urge for answers?"
Avalon started to fiddle with the hem on her dress. "A's going too far."
"What happened?" I asked worriedly.
"Nothing." Avalon muttered quickly. "Where's Brielle?" She quickly changed the subject.
"I'm not sure." Charlotte replied. "Maybe she's sick?"
"I assumed it was that, but she usually calls us when she's sick." Avalon responded, turning on her phone to check that Brielle hadn't messaged her.
"Guys this is Brielle we're talking about. She once came to school with the flu just so she could take that math test." I said.
"What if something bad happened to her?" Charlotte fretted. "With all that's going on right now how do we know that A didn't do something to her."
"We don't." Avalon responded bluntly.
"But I'm sure she's fine." I added quickly, attempting to calm Charlotte down. "She's probably just tired."
"Didn't you hear?" Winona Callen said, wheeling in front of our table. Avalon looked like she had swallowed a lemon, she had never had much patience for Winona. Charlotte on the other hand looked like she was about to have a nervous breakdown. "Little miss perfect took a trip to the slammer last night."
"What?!" Charlotte and I exclaimed simultaneously.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Avalon retorted, glaring at Winona like she was a pimple that had decided to appear on the end of her nose.
"I'm just saying that Brielle Cavanaugh isn't the perfect little role model everyone thinks she is. Deception is a powerful thing, and she had everyone fooled." Winona said. "You'd know a lot about that wouldn't you Charlotte?" She grinned nastily and started to wheel away, leaving a stunned Charlotte in her wake.
"I hate her." Avalon grumbled, stabbing her fork into her salad. "They say that when people have life threatening accidents it gives them a better sense of life. I think Winona just became a bigger bitch then she already was."
"What was that about?" I asked Charlotte. She still looked like someone had punched her in the face and was sitting there with a dazed almost scared expression on her face. "Charlotte?"
"I have absolutely no idea what she was talking about." Charlotte said abruptly, pulling herself out of her thoughts. Avalon and I exchanged an uncertain glance but didn't say anything.
"What did she mean about Brielle?" I questioned, changing the topic.
"I have absolutely no idea." Charlotte answered, looking extremely glad the spotlight had been shifted from her.
"This is Winona we're talking about." Avalon said. "We can't trust anything that comes out of her mouth. I'm sure Brielle is fine."
"We should go to her house tonight to check on her." I suggested. Avalon and Charlotte nodded in agreement.
Charlottes gaze suddenly focused on something across the courtyard. Avalon and I followed her line of sight. Jackson and his group on friends has just walked in and sat at one of the tables. Charlotte looked like she was trying to hold back tears. For some reason Avalon had gone very pale and looked like she was going to throw up the salad she had just eaten.
"Are you ok?" I asked Charlotte in concern. She nodded her head and gave me a small smile.
"Who does that to someone's motorbike?!" Jackson yelled suddenly to his friend, a few people turned around to see what the uproar was about. Jackson glowered at them and they quickly turned away.
"What's he so upset about?" I wondered.
"Someone set fire to his motorbike." Charlotte said.
"What?!" I exclaimed.
"Weird right." Avalon said, taking a sip of her drink. I looked at her guilt ridden expression and her gaze constantly shifting towards Jackson and his group of friends.
"You didn't." I said, hoping what I had been thinking wasn't true.
"What?" Avalon asked in surprise.
"You set fire to Jackson's motorbike. Didn't you?" I said softly. "That's what A's been threatening you about."
"You set fire to his motorbike?" Charlotte screeched.
"Keep your voice down." Avalon hissed. "It's true, I set fire to his motorbike." Ignoring the shocked looks on Charlotte and I's faces, she continued. "I wasn't going to let him get away with hurting my friend."
"I get that, but you can't just go around setting fire to people's motorbikes!" I reprimanded. "Do you know how much trouble you could be in if people found out?"
"I know." Avalon said. "I was being stupid and impulsive, besides A already had me paying for it."
"How?" Charlotte asked.
"Yesterday, after Griffin kissed me-"Avalon started just to be interrupted.
"What?!" Charlotte and I yelled.
"Long story." Avalon said. "Now can you let me finish?" Charlotte and I nodded. "Anyway so after Griffin kissed me, I went upstairs to my room and all over my walls there were poster sized pictures of all the bad things I've done."
"Like setting fire to Jackson's car." Charlotte added.
"Yeah, and kissing Griffin, and changing my grades." Avalon said.
Charlotte and I looked at Avalon in confusion when she mentioned changing her grades. "Another long story." Avalon muttered, and started to fiddle with the strap on her purse.
"Can we just back it up to the part where you kissed Griffin?" I said.
"It's not what you guys are thinking." Avalon said. "I didn't kiss him to get back at Sophia or anything like that. He kissed me, I pushed him away."
"Are you ok?" Charlotte asked.
"I'm fine." Avalon said. "Griffins a jerk. Maybe I'll set fire to his motorbike too."
Charlotte and I glared at her in disbelief. "Kidding." Avalon added.
Sophia and Griffin then walked into the courtyard. I expected them to be fighting but to my surprise they were walking hand in hand.
"They look awfully cushy, considering he just kissed her little sister." I murmured.
"I didn't exactly tell Sophia." Avalon said guilty.
"Avalon." Charlotte sighed.
"I wanted to." Avalon defended herself. "Griffin threatened me."
Charlotte's eyes widened. "Threatened you? How?"
"I think A must have informed him about me setting fire to Jackson's motorbike. Because somehow he knew, and he threatened to tell everyone if I told Sophia he kissed me."
"Oh my god." I breathed.
"Do you think he's A?" Charlotte asked. Avalon shrugged.
"I don't think so. What would his motive be, I mean why would he want to ruin the lives of four sixteen year old girls?" I said.
"You're right." Charlotte said, sounding slightly disappointed that we weren't any closer to finding out who A was.
The bell signifying the start of class sounded "We'll talk about this later with Brielle." Avalon said, grabbing her purse and standing up.
"After school." I said.
(Line Break)
Avalon, Charlotte and I walked towards to front door of the Cavanaugh's house. Charlotte reached forward and knocked lightly on the door.
A moment later the door swung open. "Hi girls. What are you doing here?" Spencer Hastings said, smiling at us.
"Hi Mrs Hastings." I said politely. "Brielle wasn't at school today, we were wondering if we could see her?"
Spencer's smile faded slightly. "I'm sorry girls but Brielle is grounded, she's not allowed to have any visitors right now."
"Oh ok." I replied, slightly confused as to why Brielle had been grounded.
"Brielle will be back at school on Monday, you can talk to her then." Spencer said. Her eyes softened a little. "I'll tell her you three stopped by."
"Thank you." Charlotte said.
We started to walk away from the house and stopped outside Brielle's front yard.
"What was that about?" Avalon asked. "Brielle's never been grounded in her life."
"You don't think what Winona said was true right?" Charlotte fretted.
"That Brielle got arrested?" I said. "It can't be, that's not like her at all."
Avalon opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted by the sound of our phones chiming concurrently.
We all exchanged scared looks and pulled out our phones to check the message.
Brielle's locked up, maybe it will be you next.
Remember I own you now
Kisses,
–A
