Avalon River's POV

"Scarlett?" I called, as I knocked on the door to the Fitz's house. After waiting a few moments I started to pound on the door again.

"Scarlett!" I screeched. I raised my fist up to start the next outbreak of hammering, however I froze with my fist mid-air when the door swung open.

"Avalon?" Nickolas Fitz asked in an extremely confused voice. He was wearing a pair of flannel pyjama pants and his hair was a mess, "What are you doing here?" He stifled a yawn, and I desperately tried to ignore the fact that he wasn't wearing a shirt.

My face flushed bright pink and I quickly turned my head away, embarrassed by my reaction "I'm here to see Scarlett." I stuttered. "Is she home?"

"Sorry no." Nickolas said. "I'm the only one here. Scarlett told me she went to see Brielle."

"Oh." I replied. I knew that was a lie. Brielle was grounded so there was no way Scarlett was seeing her. I made a mental note to question Scarlett about this later. "That's a shame. I really needed to talk to her."

"If it's important you can wait for her inside." Nick offered. "I'm sure she won't be long."

"No, it wasn't that important. I'll just go home." I said, turning around to walk away.

"Wait." Nick called. He grabbed my hand and turned me around so I was facing him. "Seriously it's no trouble."

I thought for a few moments before finally giving in, "Alright, if you insist."

Nick gestured for me to walk inside. After entering the house he closed the door and followed me into the living room.

"So…" I murmured, slightly uncomfortable. I looked up at the ceiling.

Nick looks at me in confusion then glanced down and suddenly went bright red. "Oh…um…I'm just going to get changed." Nick announced. "I'll be back soon."

"Take your time." I called softly, half hoping he'd hear me half hoping he wouldn't.

I took a seat on the couch and anxiously started to rub my hands up and down my legs. I pulled out my phone and quickly sent Scarlett a text asking where she was.

I looked up as Nick re-entered the room, now fully clothed. He sat down on the couch opposite me and looked at me expectantly.

"You know you don't have to sit with me." I informed him.

"I know." Nick replied, leaning back into the couch. "I want to."

"Are you ok?" Nick asked suddenly.

"I'm fine." I replied curtly. "Why?"

"You look tired." He observed.

"I have a lot going on at the moment." I answered.

"Like what?" Nick asked.

Dealing with a stalker that wants to ruin my life, I thought. "Shopping." I blurted out, unable to think of anything else.

"Shopping?" Nick raised his eyebrow at me.

I defensively crossed my arms over my chest and nodded my head. I scanned the room until my gaze stopped on the grand piano that was sitting across the room. It had been there for years but I don't think I had ever seen anyone touch it.

"Do you play?" I asked suddenly.

"Yeah." Nick said, following my line of sight. "I've played both piano and guitar for twelve years."

"I didn't know that." I responded in surprise.

The corners of Nick's mouth turned upwards into a small smile, "There's a lot you don't know about me Avalon Rivers."

"Have you ever played an instrument?" Nick asked.

I kicked my feet up on the couch, "I played flute for three years but I quit."

"Why?" Nick questioned, looking at me curiously.

"Sophia beat me." I rolled my eyes.

"Was she better?" He asked.

"No. She literally hit me with the flute." I responded. Nick's eyes widened. "Are you in the school band?" I continued, changing the subject.

"No." Nick said. He looked slightly embarrassed and ran his hand through his messy dark brown curls. "It's not exactly the coolest thing to be involved in."

"You think it would ruin your reputation." I murmured.

"I know it would ruin my reputation." He agreed.

"But don't you love it?" I said.

"Of course I love it, but that doesn't matter, not to the people at our school. You of all people should know where I'm coming from." He responded.

I did, I had always tried so hard to be popular. For a while it was all that had mattered to me. I wasn't at all proud of some of the things I had done to gain my reputation.

"I do." I agreed. "But you're great Nick. I'm sure people would love you for who you are."

"I'm not so sure." He replied.

"Please." I scoffed. "You walk around the school drooling charm like some kind of oversized Labrador."

Nick chuckled slightly, "You know I can never tell if you're insulting me or not."

"I'm sorry." I murmured.

"I don't mind." Nick smiled. "It keeps things interesting. Enough about me, what about you? You're practically the poster child for popular."

"Yeah." I said softly. "But not for the right reasons."

Nick looked like he wanted to reply and he probably would have if his laptop hadn't started making sounds that vaguely reminded me of a dying whale.

"What the hell was that?" I asked.

"My computer is extremely messed up. I've been meaning to get it fixed." Nick replied.

"Can I take a look at it?" I requested.

Nick stared at me with an extremely puzzled look on his face, "Sure…"

I walked over to the desk where his laptop was. I sat down on the seat and pulled my golden blonde hair into a ponytail. After about five minutes I had found the problem and completely fixed the computer.

"That was easy, it was just a virus." I smiled. I hopped of the chair and moved back to the couch.

"Wow, I didn't know you were good with computers." Nick said, clearly impressed.

"There's a lot of things you don't know about me Nickolas Fitz." I responded, repeating our previous conversation.

Nick grinned at me but his smile faded when his phone beeped. He pulled out his phone and rolled his eyes when he read the message.

"Anyone important?" I asked, leaning my head back on the couch and closing my eyes.

"Not particularly. It's just my girlfriend." Nick replied.

My eyes shot open and I sat up. I know it sounds cliché but at that moment I literally felt my heart shatter, "You have a girlfriend?"

Nick nodded still eying his phone, "Yeah. Olivia Butler, you know her right."

"Yes." I muttered, trying to swallow the lump in my throat. "You two make a great couple."

I sucked a breath in and abruptly stood up, "I need to go."

"What?" Nick asked, throwing me a confused look. "I thought you were going to wait for Scarlett."

"It doesn't matter anymore. I can talk to her tomorrow." I said, walking towards the door.

"Do you need a ride?" Nick called out from behind me.

"No." I replied rudely, and walked out the front door slamming it behind me.

As soon as I left the house I broke into a run. I tore around the corner. I knew I should be furious at Nick, but I couldn't bring myself to be. I was more infuriated at myself. This is why I never stuck to one guy, because if you put your feelings out there you're giving someone a chance to hurt you.

After running a good block away from the Fitz's house I stopped sprinting and slowed into a brisk walk. I was annoyed when I felt tears prick my eyes and start to drip down my cheeks. I furiously rubbed at my eyes, to rid them of liquid. Feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket I pulled it out to check the message.

Ouch!
For once the slut of the school didn't get the guy
Kisses,
-A

I clenched my fists and using all my strength threw my phone against a nearby tree. The screen cracked and for a moment I felt a slight sense of satisfaction. However, it soon stopped as the meaning of the message really sunk in.

I collapsed on the sidewalk and buried my head in my hands. Perhaps A is right, maybe I am a slut. That would explain why Nickolas doesn't like me. I'm a bitch and I treat others terribly.

"Avalon?" I hear a voice call.

I lifted my head from my hands and brushed the tear stained strands of hair away from my face. Aria Fitz has pulled her car up beside me on the sidewalk. She got out of the car and started to walk towards me.

"Honey are you alright?" She asked in a concerned voice.

At her kind words I started to cry harder. She crouched down beside me and wrapped her arms around me.

"Do you want me to give you a ride home?" She asked kindly.

I shook my head vigorously, "That's the last place I want to go. My family hates me."

"Avalon that's not true." Aria said softly. "Your parents love you very much, they always have." I stayed silent. "Let me give you a ride home." She continued.

"Alright." I sighed, and followed her towards the car.

She shouldn't have been so nice to me, I didn't deserve that. I am selfish, stupid and a slut. I am out of control and I make too many mistakes.
I don't deserve Nickolas. I don't deserve anything.

What did you?
What do you think of Nickolas and Avalon? Do you think he lead her on?
