Chapter 39! Here we finally are!
In this chappie, Fia reveals big plans for her future to Ray and Adam. Of course this won't be done without a song attached.
I've been pretty busy with school, but Chapter 40 will hopefully be written this weekend and posted ASAP.
Hope you enjoy! Get hyped!
Ray POV
Since Adam and Fia had the master suite in the TC house, a special perk was added to their room. Adam's room had a balcony. A nice white marble balcony gazing over onto the Los Angeles street house. Our house was in the high hills, so practically wherever you stood had a great view of certain areas of the city.
The day after the party, I wanted a place to relax without going down to the pool, where usually Mitch and Jerome hung out. As an alternative, I crept into Fia's room and outside onto the balcony. When my bare feet stepped onto the marble, I felt a ocean breeze run down my spine, cooling down my body. It was a very relaxing feeling. Even though the house was not even close to the ocean, I would close my eyes and imagine that we were near the ocean.
What I hadn't noticed when I first went out onto the balcony was Fia playing Minecraft in her room. She eyed me sneak through and quietly followed behind. Around 15 minutes after I'd finally settled into the air against my face, Fia tapped me on the back. I leapt back, almost crushing her feet with mine. Fortunately, she wore closed-toed shoes yet my feet weren't the bone-crushing type so it wouldn't have mattered too much.
"Fia! Didn't see you there!" I exclaimed, trying to make it seem like I wasn't frightened.
Fia fixed her shades before responding. "So… I need to tell you something. Something I haven't told the other girls yet. I want to tell them though, but I thought you would be the right person to tell first… cause you pretty much were the one who got me here in the first place… and together with Adam..."
I accidentally interrupted her comment. "Don't say that. You played a huge role in it."
"But you helped a lot on Adam's part."
"True." I nodded, but wiped away the thought physically with my hand. "That's not the point though… What do you wanna tell me so badly?"
"Ray…" Fia pressed her lips together, holding back a huge grin. "I'm going to NYU to study musical theater!"
I let my mouth hang open as I gave my friend a giant hug. "Fia! Congratulations! You so deserve it!"
When I let go, Fia continued. "It isn't as good as booking the role of Eponine in Les Miserables… but New York is gonna be awesome." I shook my head, seeing no way that New York could be less awesome than a part in a small musical production.
"Well, I've never been to New York, so you gotta get me a snow globe or something."
Fia placed a hand on her hip and the other on my shoulder, laughing, "Oh, my pineapple, I will. I promise you I will."
I crossed my arms and glanced away, realizing another factor to Fia's college plans. "Adam's going to New York too… Wonder how he'll like it."
"Adam's not leaving LA." My friend bit her lip.
I snapped my head back to face Fia. "What?! But have you told him you're leaving Cali?"
"Uh… no…" Fia scratched the back of her head, obviously not expecting me to bring up Adam into the conversation.
"Dude, you gotta tell him sooner or later. Of course before it's too late."
"I will…"
Since Fia seemed worked up from my slight argument with her, I decided to switch the topic. "Anyways, we have to sing something together before you leave."
"How about Better Together by R5… the one from your wedding party?"
"Nah. It doesn't really suit us anymore."
"Oh! I got the best one! Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson!"
I gasped, grasping onto Fia's arm. She eyed me as I gripped my hand around her skin. "Perfect!" I paused and lifted my hand, not thinking of the song by heart. "Wait… how does that go again?"
"Let me start and you can sing along," Fia replied confidently, determined that I would remember the song just by her singing it.
"Alright then." I chuckled and watched Fia slide her iPhone out of her pocket and flip to the music section. She pulled up the Breakaway karaoke and pressed play.
"Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window"
I spotted two muscular figures in the shrubs. Fia ignored them completely while she sang. She could block out anything unimportant. I wasn't quite sure if I could trust spying on the shadows, but I kept my gut instinct that they weren't there to hurt us.
"Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray"
I felt my eyelids close as my voice belted out and analyzed each word. My hands gripped onto the railing of the balcony.
"Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me"
My eyes popped open again and met Fia's friendly smile. I smirked back, thinking back to all of the great moments I'd had with Fia beside me. My wedding, all the fun times in LA, defending against enemies both in Washington and LA, middle school. Events with my friends outside of the popular high school group would be moments I'd never forget.
"Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away"
We sung together, smiling. Fia twirled me, forcing me to lean back against the railing. No matter what, I kept singing and trying to get into the music as much as Fia.
"I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly"
My hand reached up towards the sky and flew back down after the copied me as soon as realized what I had done.
"I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway'"
The two figures finally crept out from the bushes, revealing themselves to be Mitch and Adam. I smirked when my eyes met Mitch's sneaky grin. Fia paid more attention to the music than to the ground, so Adam had to improvise. He noticed a tressel l growing alongside the white exterior of the building, and motioned that he would climb it. I thought it was a crazy idea and they could get hurt. But Mitch and Adam were men, and I couldn't control their actions, good or bad.
"Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love"
I occasionally glanced over at Mitch and Adam pulling themselves onto the balcony while keeping Fia distracted. This Romeo and Juliet moment seemed to be Adam's surprise for Fia, so I chose to keep it that way. As for Mitch, I supposed he didn't notice I'd seen them and wanted to play along with Adam.
"I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway"
The boys finally reached the top of the balcony. Fia still paid no attention to Adam as he snuck up behind her. Instead of allowing us to sing the entire song by ourselves and be secretive and quiet, Mitch had to pop in and sing a verse himself.
"Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean"
Adam, the professional singer of the group, cut off Mitch by singing another verse. Mitch elbowed him, which caused Adam to sing even louder.
"Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away
And breakaway"
Fia noticed Adam behind her, which caused him to hug her from behind. She chuckled as Adam held the last note of way until the four of us began the chorus.
"I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway"
I sang as loud as I could with Mitch holding my hand. In most fictional stories, the author puts a fourth wall around the location so no neighbors aren't distracted or irritated, so I could sing as loud as I could. Wait… what am I saying?
"Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway"
Fia and I sang another short verse.
"Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway"
Mitch, Adam, Fia, and I finished off the song with the final chorus.
"I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Mitch lifted me up from my waist and spun me around. As the wind rushed through my long dark hair, all my troubles and fears drifted away because I knew that Mitch wouldn't let me fall. He would always be there for me, and I would be there for him. Getting Mitch to fall in love with me and never be hurt by my actions were my personal goals since the end of my senior year of high school.
"Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from"
He placed me back onto the floor of the marble balcony. Meanwhile, Fia and Adam twirled each other like the sporadic people I knew them to be.
"I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway."
Mitch and Adam gave us one last spin before kissing us on the cheek. It basically matched up so I wondered if they had that entire thing rehearsed. I wondered if they knew Fia and I would sing Breakaway. The things our boyfriends and husbands would do to make us happy in Los Angeles were insane.
I stared in Mitch's eyes for a good ten seconds before Fia cough, snapping me out of a daydream and into reality again. This reminded me of Fia's move to NYC. I looked over towards my friend, whose facial expression turned uncomfortable as soon as she met my glare. Adam titled his head, confused about Fia's sudden change.
"Fi, is there anything wrong?" Adam questioned, sincerely worried. Mitch and I watched as the conversation occurred.
"No… of course not…" Fia replied, her voice slightly shaking.
"You're not okay right now," Adam concluded, "Tell me what's wrong and we can solve this problem together."
"I don't think we can solve it together." Fia bowed down her head. I kinda felt bad for her, but I knew she had to handle the situation herself. She could handle it herself like she'd done with so many other problems.
"Then what's wrong? Why can't I help?"
"Cause I got accepted to NYU."
Adam stopped in his train of thought, attempting to think of a bad thing. "That's not bad! That's great, Fi!"
"But it means I have to move to New York."
"What?"
"There's no other school closer that offers the same exact options I need."
"How about University of Washington…?"
"Why are you doubting her choice of university?" I questioned Adam.
"Well… we haven't been together for too long of a time… I just don't want to lose you. Fia, I really am in love with you…" He took a deep breath and glanced directly at his girlfriend. "You know what?! I should've done this a long time ago."
That next moment was the most unexpected thing ever. Adam dropped onto one knee, and caught a little velvet box that Mitch dropped into his his hand. He looked back up at Fia, who slowly took off her sunglasses to show bright and colorful eyes, and opened up the little box to reveal a diamond ring. Fia sniffled to hold back tears. I had never seen her cry before, so this was a first yet a last. Fia never cried after that moment. It was the most emotional and romantic event that had happened in LA between Fia and Adam.
"Fiara Seraphina Guardian, will you marry me?"
Fia could only handle a quiet nod before dropping on her knees as well and taking the ring from the box.
Adam slid it onto the correct engagement finger, wiping tears off his cheeks too. "I love you so much, Fia. Promise me with this commitment that when you come back from college, we can officially get married and start a family together. I don't know what my life would have been like right now if I hadn't met you. Have as much fun as you can in New York."
"Don't worry," Fia told her fiancé in between soft sobbing, "I'm only there for six months until I come back for Ray's due date."
"Oh yeah," I thought to myself, "I almost forgot I was having a kid." Kick. "There it goes again." To end the romantic moment, I quickly pulled myself away from Mitch and rushed from the balcony into Fia's bathroom.
