The world brightened as her words reached my ears. It was, to put it metaphorically, like a cloud full of rain had been hanging over my head my whole life and with those words the sun had cleared it away.
Her face glowed scarlet as she looked away, her green eyes focusing on something else, anything else except for me.
"Kayla…" my words trailed away, but it was enough to catch her attention, those green eyes locking with mine.
My mouth moved but no words came out, nothing came out, I saw the slight surprise in her eyes, the surprise that I had nothing to say. The surprise was soon replaced with confusion;
"Derek…?" she said my name as a question, but there as noting I could do to reply.
"Ok, this is not going the way I thought it would…um, would you mind letting me go I want to get out of here before I make even more of a fool out of myself. Clearly I got the wr-" she hadn't gotten the wrong idea. I stopped her talking by putting a hand over her mouth.
"Look Kayla, you didn't get the wrong idea—" it was now my turn to be cut off,
"That's all I need to hear" she said, moving my hand to speak. That was when I realised that I was still on top of her, rolling off to the side I lay on my back, looking up at the rapidly darkening sky. A storm was coming.
And then the rain was falling, the large heavy drops landing on the unprotected wooden floor and us.
"So what did you do when it rained?" she asked, watching me as I stood up,
"I learned to love it" I replied, offering a hand to help her up. No matter how used to the rain I was, Kayla probably wasn't enjoying getting rained on. Taking my hand, I help her to stand. We'd have to leave the house and go back to the woods to get our stuff which we'd just left behind at the place we'd been training.
"Nice avoidance of answering a simple question the comment was said with a pointed look. One that challenged me to answer the question.
"Come on let's get out of the rain" once more I avoided the question, not because I didn't want to answer it, but because I loved the look of frustration on her face as she tried to work out why I wasn't answering such a simple question.
"You know I like the rain to" and as I looked back over my shoulder, I saw her standing there in the pouring rain, arms lifted out beside her and head thrown back.
"Certainly looks like it" I muttered, blinking water out of my eyes,
"You're such a downer Derek" Kayla said as she dropped her arms and looked at me.
"Come on" I sighed, knowing all too well that she would soon be freezing. Unlike me Kayla did not do well with the cold at all,
"Can't we just stay here?" Kayla asked as we got to the downstairs level. Rain was no longer pouring down on us, the floor of the upper-level protecting us.
"Why would you want to spend the night in an old, burnt down house that has most of the roof missing?"
"Because I am interested in the stories that it has to tell and also because I don't really want to go back yet" she replied with a one-shouldered shrug.
"I guess we could…" the words had come out before I knew it.
"Yay!" Kayla practically squealed, having a complete Lydia-like moment for that second. I had never known Kayla to actually squeal but there you go.
"You're very strange at times" once more I spoke without thinking, but my words got a laugh from her.
"Come on" I said, leading the way into the room on the left.
"Derek…Derek!" someone nudged me in the ribs, waking me from the dream I'd been having, not that it had been a good dream in the first place.
"Wha-" I trailed off as I opened my eyes,
"Lydia!?" scrambling to stand, I stared at the red-haired banshee who just stood there, staring back at me.
"Derek. It isn't Lydia" Kayla hissed as she stood as well,
"Angelique possessed her, remember?" and then I did remember how Kayla's sister had possessed Lydia and run off in her body. How I could have forgotten was a different matter entirely.
"….Interesting development" Angelique's young voice came out of Lydia's body.
"Interesting development?" Kayla repeated the words in a mutter, a frown forming over her face. I turned to look at Lydia – Angelique – again, but she was gone.
Once more she'd vanished in Lydia's body.
"Interesting development indeed" was all I could say.
"Oh shit." The sudden worry in Kayla's voice made my skin prickle,
"What?" I asked, not really wanting to know what bad thing as going to happen this time, for some reason I had a feeling that it was going to be the worst one yet.
"This is bad. Very bad." She muttered. Her eyes were wide and her skin had gone pale.
"What is it Kayla?"
"Someone's going to die. Soon." She said, for some reason I relaxed a little, that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Besides it was fairly easy to protect someone from getting killed if you had a good plan and a half decent team to protect whoever it was.
"But she isn't going to be the one that kills them" those words made me flinch, that was going to make it harder. If we knew who the killer was, it would be easy. But when you don't know who it is then it gets a hell of a lot harder.
"Who is going to kill them then?" I asked,
"I don't know"
"Do you know who's going to die? If we knew that it certainly would be a little easier for us to protect them.
"Yes…" Kayla's voice shook,
"Well who is then?" I tried to prepare myself for the answer, but it is sort of hard to prepare for something like that.
"The person we least expect."
