Chapter 5

"Can I choose where we go next?"

"Where would that be?"

"Trenzalor."

The scene played on repeat in his head, ending with a slow motion image of his glass smashing to the floor, then repeating from the beginning.

The Doctor had remained seated where River had left him, staring at the now empty chair, trying to find something that would justify what Trevor had said to him earlier that morning.

"Trenzalor…." He growled.

Raising his voice as he went on "It doesn't make any sense…How would he know...how would anybody else know, only River and I know, none should know, it hasn't happened yet!"

His voice dropped back down as he mumbled "Sorry". He longed for River to tell him it was fine, but she wasn't there, none was there, he was unsure why he even bothered apologizing to an empty room.

The sound of the Tardis landing pulled the Doctor out of his trance. Jumping out of his chair he darted out of the room, hoping to catch his wife before she left with Trevor to spend time with his great grandfather. Running through the corridors, he nearly made it, standing fifty feet away from the consol room when he heard the door open and Trevor calling for his grandpa.

"River! River wait!"

Moving to stand under the pass through he caught sight of her pulling a lever before walking to the door.

He struggled to call out to her, his voice catching in his throat.

"River."

She turned, holding eye contact with him before closing the door behind her.

The sound of the Tardis materializing felt like a slap in the face as he slid down the wall leaning his head back and closing his eyes. His hearts were hurting but his mind was continuing to sift through any reasons to why Trevor knows what he knows. As a thought crossed his mind he jumped up.

"That just might work!"

Running up to the consol The Doctor began flipping several switches, staring up at the monitor as the Tardis's security footage was broadcasted onto the screen.

"Come on, come on, please work." He mumbled to himself. Pulling his sonic screwdriver out and flipping it in his hand.

Hour's worth of footage streaked across the screen in a matter of seconds until one clip caught his eye.

"Gotcha."

Backing the clip up a few seconds before pressing play, The Doctor re-watched the segment of Trevor running through the halls; only this time he wasn't watching Trevor. He was looking for what was behind him. Freezing the frame The Doctor stared at the picture.

"Now where's Waldo?" His eyes drawing to what looked like a silhouette of a woman entering the corner of the shot.

"And what do we have here?" he questioned as he moved closer to the screen, pulling a pair of glasses with circular frames out of his pocket and placing them onto his face. A small grin of satisfaction crept across his mouth.

Highlighting the silhouette, he sent it through the system to be analyzed. The minutes felt like hours as he waited. Then finally an answer; Unknown Species appeared on the screen.

"Damn. Well whatever you are, you seem to have quite the liking to Trevor." He pointed out as he looked at the other still shoots that appeared on the screen as a match to the "unknown species". The silhouette looked as if it followed his son everywhere, but what concerned The Doctor most was that it seemed Trevor could see and talk to whatever, or who ever, this thing was.

Suddenly a new security photo popped up on the screen, causing The Doctor to freeze. The picture was taken seconds ago showing the skinny man staring at the computer and a dim silhouette standing beside him.

Slowly turning, he drew his sonic.

"Well that's weird. Why is it when I look at the screen I can see a shadow…but when I look beside me….there's nothing there?" Scanning the area with his sonic he frowned. "Hmmm something's not right, it's reading unresponsive…..what are you?"

His eyes went wide as he jumped away from the consol. The keyboard was beginning to type on its own. S-O-U-F-F-L-E

"NO!" The Doctor gaped.

"It can't be! Clara? But how?"

His shock was interrupted by Rivers voice echoing through the Tardis: "Doctor! Doctor please!"

"River!" He gasped.

"Don't worry wife! I'm coming!"

Running over to the controls he banged the coordinates into the consol, tumbling to the floor as the Tardis lurched sideways. Pulling himself up, he slammed a lever down, anxiously waiting for the Tardis to land.

Sprinting out the door The Doctor frantically looked around the yard. There was no sign of anyone, except for a miniature sonic screwdriver lying in the grass. The Doctor began to panic. Trevor has always had his sonic screwdriver with him; he would never be as careless as to leave it lying around.

Looking up he noticed the back door ajar. Darting to it he shouted "RIVER! TREVOR!"

Entering the house he glanced around. Everything looked fairly normal except for an overturned chair and shattered teacup in the middle of the kitchen. Moving into the kitchen he was struck with a surprise.

"Oh River!" He cried out as he noticed her motionless body lay sprawled out in the corner of the kitchen.

Rushing over to her, he fell to his knees, taking her face in his hands.

"River! River! River dear please wake up! Oh River please!" He urgently called, feeling tears well up. Pulling her head into his lap, he stroked her cheek. His body shaking now as he continued to say her name.

"River! River please wake up! I'm so sorry River, just please wake…."

He felt the tears fall as her eyes slowly fluttered open. Bringing his forehead to hers, he held her close, now rocking her body.

"Oh River! Thank God!"

He felt her abruptly grab her wrist.

"Doctor the Great Intelligence was here! They took Trevor, and they might have Brian!"

The Doctor felt his face turn to stone.

"How?" He croaked.

"There was a Zygon; it seems they are working together for the time being. But..." She hesitated.

"But what? What is it River? Did they hurt you?" Sensing the fear in her hesitation.

"H-he wanted me to relay a message to you. He said "Trenzalor is waiting...and this time justice will be served". Doctor what do you think that means?"

Standing up, he moved to window, staring at the dark clouds that had developed.

"It means I will suffer for all that I have done, he failed to kill me the first time, so now he is going to kill the one thing that will destroy the both of us. He is going to kill Trevor….But I won't let that happen."

Pulling off his tweed jacket as he turned back to River.

"Here, let me help you love." Placing the coat around her shoulders. Ignoring her objections as he lifted River into his arms. Whispering into her messy golden hair "I am your husband and I have let you down, now Ill fix it…Ill fix everything." He held her close, carrying her out of the house and to the blue police box in the yard.

With a swift snap of his fingers, the doors of the Tardis opened, and The Doctor stepped in.

Walking past the consol he mumbled: "Old girl, take us to our son." He could hear the Tardis interjecting and without thinking growled "You will take us to Trenzalor or I will do it myself." Sighing as he felt Rivers body tense at the harshness used towards the Tardis, he placed a kiss on her forehead and walked up the stairs to the medical bay.

River looked up from his chest. "Sweetie where are we going?"

"I want to make sure they didn't hurt you."

"I'm fine."

"I just want to make sure."

River let out a sigh as they walked through the medical bay doors, she didn't want to admit to the pain she was feeling in her stomach.

The Doctor carefully laid River down on a white hospital bed before walking away to bring over the scanner.

"River… what did they do to you?"

She shook her head "He electrocuted me….twice."

The thought of those monsters hurting his wife and son sent flares of rage through him.

Walking back from a cabinet full of medical equipment, he turned on the little machine.

"Doctor….there's something you should know..." River stuttered.

He placed a kiss on her lips before starting the quick scan.

"You can tell me right after this. Now just lay still." He said, moving the scanner over her body. "See, nice and quick. Now what was it you….." The Doctor drifted off staring at the machine. Looking back and forth between the machine and River, feeling another surge of anger.

"Pregnant." They whispered together.

The Doctor could no longer hold his anger in, chucking the little machine across the room.

"Doctor!" River cried.

"Doctor Look at me!" Sitting up she took her husband's tear soaked face in her hands. "Sweetie" she begged "This is a good thing." But The Doctor just shook his head.

Taking her hands into his, he looked into her eyes. "I'm sorry."

With confusion in her eyes she furrowed her eyebrows "Wha-no." Shaking her head she placed a hand on her abdomen. "No you're lying. You're lying!"

He sat himself on the bed, grabbing her wrist as she tried to slap him across the face. Pulling her fighting body into his arms he rocked her back and forth stroking her hair. The couple shed tears for Trevor, and for their unborn child, that was taken away from them before River was able to tell The Doctor of the joyous news.

"I swear on the graves of Trenzalor that Trevor will be brought home safe. No more Time Lord blood will be spilt, especially of a child." The Doctor snarled. "None will dare to touch my family again."
