Well this has been a long time coming.
Really - I can't even apologize because of the stupidness of how late its been. Work has been killing me and the fact it literally has been my longest chapter, ever - on any of my stories - it took whatever spare hour had to write parts it.
Also it's been cut into two parts. I didn't want t keep dragging it out but it was far to big near enough 35,000 words, I would have put them up together but I have no time now so the second part will be up possibly in a few hours after I get back.
But for now enjoy reading, I hope people are still interested and as always, I don't own OUAT...But whose looking forward to the Queen's of darkness? Cannot wait for Regina's meeting with Maleficent again.
Happy reading. D
She followed them out by keeping a track of their scent as she had to hide in the shadows and so at times lost them. Through the never-ending labyrinth they walked until finally they came to a well-lit opening at the far end and the clod breeze that followed told her she was coming to the end.
She waited for the last of the small men to exit before hanging back and then following as she had to squint on stepping out in to the sunlight once again. Once her eyes adjusted she glanced around to see where she had ended up and found to her surprise – she had come out on what looked to be the Dwarves home.
The small cottage just situated at the edge of the forest was the biggest clue as she stared at the homey looking thatched building; she nodded approvingly as she weirdly found it adorable before noting that they were heading into the woods and so had to hurry to catch up as she ventured after them she noticed as she looked around her, a rather unusual realization.
The forest – this forest, it seemed – was far nicer than the forest she and Ruby lived. Looking around she found it ludicrous at the notion and it seemed ridiculous but to her – it seemed… sweeter.
The air, cleaner - the trees seemed more alive – the birds seemed more irritatingly chipper as they sung around them. Shaking her head she didn't know whether to be amazed at the drastic change by a simple move in location or happy that she didn't have to listen to them each morning as she slowed just a few metres from them.
She watched as they conversed for a few minutes before apparently making their choice. One of them stepped away from the group and over to a large solid wall of greenery, she eyed them carefully as he took something from a small pouch at his side and her mood fell when she looked on at him.
He threw something glittery over the mass of shrubbery leaves and vines as they started to wriggle and twitch. Realizing with a little awe they were magical plants she watched on as they started to gently unwind and part from each other to reveal a door as soon he was joined by the rest before waiting.
The door, ever so slowly, began to open for them. Its hinges creaking as slowly it pulled away from the make shift wall to admit them to the other side. Regina watched as it opened far enough to allow them to walk through as one by one they filed in single line. She never made a move seemingly entranced by the scene until the last of them had gone through.
No sooner as the last dwarf entered, the door started to shut again. Its bolts pulling back once more to lock itself behind them – the sight had her moving as she quickly darted from her hiding space, she knew it she let it shut then only fairy dust would open it once more. She didn't have the time to go back and get some as who knew how far they would have gone in her delay and so ran as fast as she could mentally calculating the distance.
She dared not use magic for fear of getting caught and so had to bite her lip when she edged her way inside quickly just as it got to the point where she wouldn't have fitted and hit her side as a result but wriggled her way inside just as it slammed shut behind her,
Clutching her now aching side she bit back the urge to curse and rage at the inanimate object now locked in favour of crouching and muffling her words into her shirt before gingerly standing and holding the hurting side before carrying on after them. They walked down a small path which led even deeper into the woods until finally just when she was getting bored and was contemplating going back; they arrived at a small clearing.
Still making sure to hang back she crouched low and shuffled over to a hedge as they gathered at the other side of the open space. She peered up to see them standing around an elevated ledge of some kind all staring at something in front of them. Eyes narrowed she winced when she pulled too fast and sharp pain shot up her side but she mildly ignored it as one of them gave over the pink diamond to the first as he moved.
With the space free she could see it was a glass container. On leaning as far as she could she was horrified to see the person inside indeed was Snow. She looked so…
Still.
She was lying so motionless it was scary as he moved up the top and placed the stone in a small slot that had been made for its purpose before standing back with the other group, she cursed him blocking her vision once more but her attention was distracted by movement on the other side and turned only for her eyes to widen when she saw Ruby.
The other woman was standing with the dwarves… where she had come from Regina didn't know but the tears that had been pouring down her cheeks said she had been there for a while as a few of the small men started to speak. Knowing that only Ruby could give her answers she sat back deciding to wait until they had left before making her move.
She took the time to glance at her surroundings. It was as she thought… very much like a child's inner dream. How this place had been hidden was amazing to her, surely others had to have known about it, maybe that's why it was heavily protected, she could understand the need to guard an admittedly nice area.
She could still hear them talking but didn't bother to try hear what they said as soon the shuffling over grass had her tensing just as footsteps alerted to them moving. She crawled around the side as if they passed her by they would surely be able to see her and peeked across to see them once more after giving their condolences, had started to make their way back.
To the gate probably but she hid as one by one they passed her hiding spot as she held her breath. "Who will wake her now?"
She knitted her brow confused by the statement as soon their footsteps vanished leaving the clearing empty of sound save for the small, occasional sniffles she could hear coming from Ruby. Making sure that the coast was clear, she stood and not bothering to brush her clothes she hurried to where the coffin lay.
She got halfway when Ruby spun around. Her guarded expression turned to shock as she saw her friend moving towards them and she dropped her tense posture without warning, she rushed over to the other woman and threw herself into her arms.
Regina staggered back but kept a strong grip on the sobbing woman as she wrapped her arms around the shaking frame. She did her best to soothe Ruby's tears minding she had never really comforted another before. She did her best to help as she kept a tight grip on her friend.
A little while later and once drenched shirt. Ruby's sobs had died down to small sniffles until eventually she lifted her head. She looked up to the brown orbs staring at her with utter concern and she had never been so grateful to have someone she knew with her.
"You ok?"
She was a bit surprised that her first question wasn't what happened but she knew Regina would always look after her friends first as she nodded.
"Ok now tell me what happened."
Fighting the urge to cry again she glanced back to the motionless Snow and shook her head. "Regina it was horrible."
Looking around she spied a tree and a soft looking patch of grass as she gently tugged her over to the shady area and they sat down still in view of the coffin. There she began to tell her about what had happened a day after Regina had left. They had been on their way to Corona when they were visited by Cora.
Regina's eyes narrowed on hearing about the witch queen, she really was starting to get on her nerves but stayed silent as Ruby carried on. She met them on the open field taunting Snow about Charming how she had him locked up, she had spared him from execution only to use him as bait. She threatened she would torture him until the edge of death unless Snow gave in.
"Gave in to what?"
Ruby composed her breathing for a moment before continuing. "I don't know to be honest, she kind of knocked me and the Hunter to the side, we hit the trees pretty hard, and when we came to we found Snow like she is now."
"Cora?" Ruby shook her head. "Gone which I found weird as I thought she would have wanted to use her as an example or something, but I'm glad she didn't."
"So how did… you know, they come about." She gestured to the track that led to the way back as Ruby shrugged. "I don't know – I think the Hunter found them. He told them what had happened and the next thing I knew – they had built this for her, they said it was to keep her safe."
Regina tipped her head slightly as she eyed the protective coffin. "They said who would wake her now… what did they mean?" Ruby shrugged.
"I don't know – we were knocked out. When we came to Snow was like that and nothing we could do would wake her," Regina looked away from the horrid scene in front of her and back to her other friend.
"You said we, is the Hunter around here to?"
Ruby shook her head. "Once he saw Snow like this, he knew it was Cora and so he and his wolf went off – I think he went after her or to try to find what he could do . She mentioned Charming and how it was unfortunate he wasn't around to help."
"Do you know what she meant by that?" Once more the wolf woman shook her head. "No, but maybe he could help – maybe that's why she's taken him… to stop him from saving Snow."
Regina thought carefully on her response. Maybe there was truth to that, perhaps he was the key to saving the all but dead woman in the case. She wouldn't have come mocking if he wasn't at least a solution. She glanced at the young royal once more and hearing Ruby sniffle as she tried to keep her tears back.
It made her so angry that this bitch thought she could do what she liked without consequence all because she had magic and a power-hungry mission to ruin others' lives.
"Has the Hunter found a way to help her yet?" Ruby shook her head sadly, "No – he hasn't returned yet. I don't know where he went he just said he would find a way, but truthfully I don't think he can."
No neither did she – not without a lot of skill breaking people free from prison. But seeing as that prisoner was the centre focus of the other woman's plan. She doubted he would be coming back anytime soon.
If they wanted anyway to save Charming – and by proxy, if he was the way to save her – Snow, they needed a plan that was both awesome in its sneakiness and aided by magic.
"How did you get in here?"
She was brought out of her plotting when Ruby turned to her, looking down she stared at her friend who had asked the question. "Hmm?"
"Did the dwarves let you in? After they saw me and Snow they knew I was a friend and so allowed me to come with them. Did you tell them you are her friend to?"
Bugger.
Regina went to speak but found that she really had no answer. How to explain this as the wolf woman waited, on seeing her friends part sheepish expression her eyes narrowed as something else came to her,
"Wait a minute. How did you know what had happened to Snow? Weren't you back at home."
Regina grinned. Her smile coy and almost innocent that Ruby nearly waved whatever response she was going to give. Until she remembered that Regina was nowhere near the portrait of holiness she was trying to pass off as now and so arched a brow waiting.
Seeing her friend morph into a face that eerily reminded her of Granny. Regina winced and frowned before biting the inside of her cheek. She really didn't want to say how she came to be in the mines in the first place, the magic may have been easy to overcome… eventually, but that didn't mean the lesson didn't stick.
She could swear when she passed certain points within the caves her whole body twitched.
"Regina."
Looking to the ground she resisted meeting her gaze for long enough until finally a step forward had her holding up her hands in surrender before she heard the very reluctant answer.
"Let's just say… it wasn't as simple as having some midget's allowing me to walk with them. Twice as hard and undoubtedly far more painful."
"Huh?"
Cocking her head Ruby knitted her brows together in confusion as Regina finally deigned to look up and sighed on seeing her face, she wasn't in any mod to repeat her experience and so waved her away.
"Maybe I'll tell you later, right now we have to save our friend."
Her diversion worked. As soon as Snow was mentioned Ruby once again fell sombre as she nodded sorrowfully. "What can we do?"
Turning her attention to Snow once more. Regina allowed her mind to wander once more, it was going to be near impossible to wake her by any other means if indeed Ruby said she was merely sleeping, if Charming was the key that saving him would be no easy feat either. They would need all the help they could get as she wasn't too sure she could just go and ask her nicely to undo what she did to Snow without getting into a fight.
By some misfortune she did kill the other woman, not being cocky but she doubted the woman had the power to beat her, than she could just undo the enchantments like that – but on the other hand.
If the queen, declaring Snow to be her biggest enemy, was petty enough then she most likely would have placed a failsafe on the spell she used, it was what she would have done. So if by chance something did happen to her, Snow would still end up like she was now until the end of time. She had to think on this but right now Ruby needed her and so she stayed. They stayed until the sun went over the tops of the trees and they knew it was time to leave, casting one last glance at the woman in the coffin Ruby vowed to stay close as they made their way to the gate.
"Are you meeting the Hunter?"
The wolf woman shook her head. "No…I don't know where he is so it's just me." Regina frowned as they walked the small track.
"Well, where is it you are staying, do you have the tent still?" Once again she shook her head. With all that happened she had forgotten it in the midst of panic, now she was sorry for that.
"I' am not leaving you to stick it out in the forest without anything to sleep in, it's getting colder," She shook her head and pulled her friend to a stop. "Come home with me tonight, I can bring you back first thing tomorrow if you want."
Ruby went to open her mouth – mostly to protest but seemed to think better of it and so nodded. It Regina was talking about going home then it meant she wasn't staying with her, as much as she had been on her own before, she liked company now and especially this night.
"Thank you,"
Regina smiled as they carried on their way up near the exit she slows down once more a look of consternation as she peeked at the mouth of the gate.
"What's wrong?" She didn't respond but her furrowed brows and chewed lip told her enough. "Do those dwarves stay in the mines… until everyone goes? Or do they have closing hours?"
Ruby pulled her head back at the innocent question posed as such by the other woman. Regina was trying to act casual but the little look of hesitation in her eyes had her smiling.
"I'm not sure… I think they go home after a certain time. But since I' am here they might just be waiting to see if I leave."
Wasn't what she wanted to hear, she let out a small sigh as she now tried to think of a way to leave the mines without being spotted by the diminutive men. She didn't think they could do much harm but she did see those pick axes and didn't fancy getting skewed for trespassing; out of them all Grumpy looked like he would have no problem doing the deed.
"Just how did you manage to get in?"
"With a lot of trial and error" She grumbled before turning to see the mirthful look on her friends face. "What you looking so bloody cheerful about?"
"Just you and your devil may care ways, never fails to make me smile." Regina frowned harder making Ruby giggle before she pulled her along to the gate as it seemed to know they were coming and slowly unwound the long vines keeping it shut as they creaked open allowing them to leave. For the next ten minutes Ruby casually walked through the long narrowing tunnels closely followed by Regina, using much more covert tactics to travel down the dark path.
Ruby shook her head still highly amused but allowed her friend to go about her less than conventional ways of getting about until they finally got to the entrance of the mines.
"See, no one here." They get to the end as Regina looks both ways quickly before diving from the darkness and past Ruby whose still smiling as she takes off for the trees on the other side and hides. Rolling her eyes and walking at a much casual pace Ruby joins her as they walk away from the mines and from Snow.
Jumping a tree root she comes to stand next to Regina who gives her a smile. Now that it's getting closer she finds herself a little apprehensive about going to the other woman's home.
It was after all, the home of the witch, the great beast of the realm. Of course she knew now she wasn't just the only witch that lived there but she had been for a long time and her reputation for guests was less than savoury, would she even allow her to stay? Apparently she was known to like her peace.
But if that was the case then she never would have taken Regina, the other woman was… an acquired taste to some and she didn't think the blonde was one of those who enjoyed behaviour that Regina daily exhibited.
If crass, loud, rude and foul mouthed could be re-written in the dictionary, it would all point to her friend at the side of her.
"What about Mal?"
"What about her" Ruby shrugged. Won't she be annoyed that you're bringing another person back—"
She was cut off with a wave as Regina pulled a face and shook her head. "Nope – as long as nothing bothers her than I could be hiding wanted criminals and she wouldn't care, well not unless it's for entertainment then."
With a single pull she yanked Ruby closer to her as the purple cloud quickly enveloped them.
Ruby's eyes widened on seeing the castle up close, the looming building towered over them both and looked so much more menacing then it did in daylight… and from others detailed account, if they got out alive that was as a tug had her stumbling lightly as the trekked up the steps and inside.
The hall was the biggest thing Ruby had ever seen. Her mouth dropped in awe as she walked staring at the high ceiling a small chuckle had her looking to find Regina staring at her with a smirk.
"This is where you live?" To her surprise the other woman shook her head. "No? Then, where do—"
Again her question made her laugh as she turned to the rest of the castle. "This is the hall, Ruby. I know Mal can be a witch sometimes – pardon the horrid pun. But she did give me a room of my own, it's upstairs."
It took her a few seconds but in the end she got that Regina was teasing her and scowled. "Oh, ha –ha" Regina shrugged but held her smirk as she tugged on her hand and they quickly made their way upstairs, getting to her room which was on the left side of the castle Regina pushed on her door stepping inside as Ruby followed.
Being only ever really the first guest she ever had in her room Regina looked about the mess and frowned that would not do and so with a sweep of her hand the mess that had been strewn about her desk and some parts of the floor vanished. She smiled happy and turned to Ruby who had been looking around the quarters.
"Well come in- make yourself at home or whatever it is people are supposed to do," She shrugged again and turned to her wardrobe leaving Ruby who made sit on the spacious bed tucked in the corner. It was far larger than anything she had ever slept on and was staring at it awe until something covered her vision.
"Nightclothes,"
Reaching up she pulled the offending item from her head gaining back her sight as she glanced down to see it was a pair of pants which was followed by a shirt that once again landed on her head. Sighing she too pulled that down and frowned over her shoulder at Regina who was rummaging through her draws.
"Thanks."
Regina lifted her head and smiled. Not hearing the slight sarcasm in her tone or ignoring it as Ruby rolled her eyes before getting changed. She didn't go hide as she took off her shirt, why would she? It wasn't like she any place to go and change, also Granny had told her that they all had the same – only if the boys were about should she than had to go hide.
Other than that it was ok and so Regina turned only to stop on seeing the bare expanse of her friends back. Brow cocked she stood in silence watching before shaking her head, once Ruby had changed she turned to find the other woman already in her own sleep pants and shirt. Must have used magic to change.
Smiling Regina moved past her and Ruby watched as she pulled back the covers and patting the bed and the space next to her Ruby made her way slowly over and followed suit. Resisting the urge to moan at the luxury that was the bed as it threatened to swallow her whole.
Regina looked on smirking at the facial expression. She loved the bed; she could see it in the slightly lazy smile Ruby gave off as she settled back against the pillows. She really did have the best stuff as another little whimper told her Ruby had set her head on the goose down pillows.
"Try getting some sleep, tomorrow is going to be a long day." Ruby turned to her, she doubted that wouldn't be a problem for this was the best bed she had ever lay in Regina lifting her hand, lazily waved it as every candle that had been lit snuffed out bathing the room in darkness.
It was at that moment a certain dark one was paying a visit to an imprisoned Prince Charming. He jumped on seeing the reptilian man emerge from the shadows. Standing he eyed the newcomer as Rumpelstiltskin smiled gleefully at Cora's captive silently before speaking.
David – unable to do nothing but stand, listened to the glittery skinned man as he spoke. He was torn when he heard about his love having been attacked by his prisoner and the urge to escape that had dwindled came back with a vengeance. The odd man promised him that he would, but would do something for him in favour of the information. Soon a deal was in place as a reluctant prince shook hands with the enchanted forest's dark devil who giggled manically before bidding him farewell with a smile and three of the shepherd princes hairs in his grasp.
Ruby very carefully cracked open one eye as slowly as she could. The sun was making itself known by sending beams of light through the window signalling the start of a new day. Yawning, she emitted a little body shudder as she felt something solid pressing against her chest. Frowning she opened her eyes blearily to see that something was Regina.
She also found that her hands had wrapped around the other woman's body and was spooning her as she had tucked the smaller woman into her body, curling it around as they slept, must have happened sometime in the night as she heaved a sigh and looked up only to yelp with fright.
Regina had been having such sweet dreams. She had entered one of those tavern contests to see who could eat the most and currently she was in the middle of roasted venison when the startled scream happened. Now that wasn't part of her dream, it was right near her ear and she scowled pulling herself more in as if to try ward off the shrill voice.
Just than a small dig to her side had her grunting, twisting her body she kept her eyes shut still worming away from the offending pokes which were getting harder until finally a hard pinch had her eyes shooting open. Growling she shot up into a sitting position holding her injured side as she turned to the culprit.
"What the hell, Ruby? She grumpily looked at the wolf woman only to find that she wasn't staring at her, she was looking past her and so turning, she were greeted with the sight of Maleficent - the Fae was standing at the foot of her bed looking at the pair with a mixture of amusement and curiosity.
Having been used to this more than once she rolled her eyes instead of staying silent and still like the other woman had before she proceeded to stretch her muscles now she was awake.
"You know in some cases watching others sleep is a sign of stalking, you weirdo" Before pushing Ruby's hand off her as the wolf woman slapped her side again at the insult levelled at the blonde who still had mirth in her eyes.
"Why Regina. I thought you by now too old to be sleeping with cuddly toys." Her eyes moved to Ruby who swallowed uncomfortably. "Had I known you to fall back on old comforts I would have happily replaced the bed in favour of your cot."
Sneering Regina brought one hand down and flipped her off, once more shaking off the patting from the slightly scared wolf that had been as still as she could, eyes never leaving the blonde who had appeared before them. She hadn't heard her arrive; normally she would be able to hear anyone coming from ten feet away.
If that wasn't enough to scare her than the fact that she was in the presence alone of the fearsome dragon witch of the realm was enough to suffice. The stories she heard hasn't been in jest or done her justice. The older woman was intimidating; she emitted an aura that screamed power, her stance was regal and her face striking and sharp.
Regina for all her quirks could be scary in her own right but not even she could make a person tremble on command. Once they got to know her perhaps but this was the 'Mistress of all evil' rightly a legend and tales of her exploits had left a vivid picture which was enough to garner that well-earned fear.
Maleficent smiled at the sweet tasting terror emitting from the wolf in front of her, she was remiss to say Regina no longer feared her and she had lamented the loss of her once advantage. But now knowing that she had the young mutt petrified was enough to put her in a good mood.
It was nice to know Regina hadn't completely thrown her over the hill just yet.
"Was there a reason you felt the need to watch us sleep, or was you missing me that much you couldn't wait until breakfast." Turning her attention back to Regina, the older woman scoffed.
"Dreams. My little cretin, in your dreams." Shaking her body after her stretch Regina slid from her bed, coming to stand by the older witch and were pleased with the look of displeasure as she had to lift her head a little. Regina wasn't by any means the tallest of people but she was still taller than the blonde.
"Trust me my dreams held a far better atmosphere than the one I' am in now, so what's up?" Resisting the express desire to hit her over the head the blonde instead breathed in deeply before speaking.
"Something of mine has gone missing. I was wondering if you have perhaps seen it." Rolling her shoulder the younger woman shook her head.
"Going to need more than that," At this the Fae turned to the wolf that was still in bed, still watching as Regina followed her sight and raised a hand dismissing her concerns.
"Ruby's cool. She won't say anything. Will you, Rubes?"
At seeing both their gazes focused on her. Ruby shook her head quickly earning a smile from Regina who turned back to the blonde. "See, if not out of loyalty then at least by fear of you, you're not as past it as you think."
Glaring at the smiling face she fought down the urge to go past hitting and contemplating throwing something heavy at her head. She focused on the conversation before opening her eyes.
"Fine – something, as I have said, is missing, something rather important and dangerous."
At this the smile fell from her lips as Regina regarded her carefully. Eyes narrowed she tilted her head a bit with her chin up, "What sort of 'dangerous' thing."
"My sleeping curse"
Silence washed over them as Regina tried to think of something to say, Ruby whoever, who had heard the words scrambled from her bed now fully alert.
"When."
The blonde turned to Ruby who was now kneeled at the foot of the bed. Her eyes alert and her whole body stiff. Far cry from the scared little wolf from before as Maleficent eyed her in silence for a few minutes before replying.
"I can't be certain as I have said I haven't been to my dungeon for a while but if I had to guess, than at least four days – maybe up to a week."
Ruby sat back on her haunches, her brow furrowed before spinning around to Regina. "Cora,"
"What?"
"Cora, it has to be. You were there Regina, you saw how Snow is." For her part Regina didn't outright wave it off as her own mind went to working on her theory, the blonde eyed them in silence before speaking.
"Seeing as you two know more than me on this – whatever, can someone please explain?" The raven haired woman turned to the expectant blonde and began to talk.
"Those days I came back here trying to find a way to get fairy dust. It seemed that Cora managed to find them on their way to Corona; she was going to meet up with her little Prince but was apprehended. Ruby said she was knocked out and came around only to find Snow on the floor looking as dead as the day she eventually will be, Cora had done something to her,"
The other woman tilted her head as she listened intently. "It was only when I managed to take down those blasted wards that I heard the little dwarves speak of Snow. I followed them to a hidden clearing on the other side where I found Ruby; she was at Snow's side who is right now in a coffin. At first I thought she was dead as it didn't look like at all she was breathing,"
She paused looking thoughtful for a moment. "But if what you've just said is true then maybe what Ruby suggested perhaps hold's reliance to it."
Maleficent didn't look happy on hearing all of that, not for the fact that the exiled princess was in a coffin. That she could care less about, but that it did sound more and more like her sleeping curse had been used as the cause.
That was her curse. She made it and no one else had the right unless she gave it so, she was also the only one within the realm to have made such a thing as Rumple hadn't, he told her so on applauding her for a job well done when it came to Briar Rose. Now only to find it had been used on the fair princess?
She was seething inside. Who the hell did this 'Cora' think she was? If she had indeed had the audacity to use her curse then she was going to show her exactly why people with half a brain cell knew they couldn't steal her possessions and get away with it.
Regina saw the look of simmering anger in the blondes blue eyes and took a step closer. "Mal, look at me." Carefully the blonde turned to her,
"You know what happens to those who take things of mine." Regina nodded trying to calm her down. She knew the blonde sorceress took her work very seriously and her curses, spells and potions. Having people who would dare take them with permission was a huge pet peeve for the Fae and more often than not people got hurt.
Regina sighed. She was getting more pissed with this woman who was causing more trouble than one should who she had never met before. Running a hand through her hair she had to think of a way from stopping the blonde going on a tirade and end up doing something she might end up regretting.
Not a lot in that sense but there was a lot of people around that might get in the way, if she couldn't go to the source than whatever was in front of her would do. Sensing the change in air pressure she quickly turned back to the older woman.
"Go calm down. I'll sort it,"
The blonde slowly turned her head and gifted the younger witch with a look she hadn't in many years, sceptical disdain. "Really, tell me how you profess to do such a thing."
Ignoring the tone and look Regina clenched her teeth. "I'll think if something, just go fix that temper of yours before someone gets hurt. Go drink wine if it helps but leave the queen to me."
Maleficent stared at her, still sceptically as her eyes bore into brown. None of them made a move or sound trying to back the other down first before finally she conceded and turned away.
"Fine-go and deal with that woman. Just get my curse back; otherwise George's kingdom won't be the only one to suffer." With that she stormed out leaving Regina staring at her retreating back and Ruby even more nervous at the small showing of just what she were famed for. Regina stood looking on after her before turning to Ruby.
The other woman was lying under the covers still staring at the door. She didn't need to know what she was thinking as it was on her face. First time meeting and her best friend was scared, fantastic. Unhappy at the prospect of leaving the warmth of her room at such an early time the other woman grumbled and turned to her wardrobe.
"Come on – I'll drop you off at the mines on my way."
Saying goodbye to Ruby who hurried back into the open cavern that led to the cut off area of the woods, Regina watched her go as she disappeared and frowned at how easy it was for her to walk through without getting zapped by the stupid wards. Shaking her head she waved her hand as the purple smog cloaked her body once more.
Standing at the foot of the long road that led to the large white… well what was the White's kingdom, now she wasn't so sure. She stared long and hard at the castle in the distance before tilting her chin. She wasn't sure if Cora would be here as she did have two kingdoms to run – everyone knew she had usurped her husband,
But this was the closest she was to either and so chose to start at the place she at least knew. She focused her magic and transported herself closer before stopping at least a hundred feet away before waving her hand once more as her appearance changed into that one a kitchen maid.
Though having never seen the queen…ever, she was pretty confident that she could have just walked around unnoticed. But she wasn't taking any chances, if the other woman did happen to be around and could sense her magic, it would at least be cloaked by her disguise. Happy with her cover, she began her walk to the castle.
Reaching the gate she slows her walk on seeing the black guards stationed outside the large drawbridge. They glance at her as she gives them a small smile; something a maid might do she figures as they nod before looking forward once again letting her pass. Smiling wider she continued her walk up the path through the village until she got to the courtyard.
Entering the double doors she stops and takes a look around. It looked so welcoming like before – but not, Cora's influence had definitely taken over as the architecture was considerably different. The colourings a darker turn, the pictures and portraits not something that would have been hung up in the old king's time.
She shivered. The air seemed different to- like it knew a change had happened and not a good one so in order to adapt it too had taken a chillier turn, now it seemed as cold and hollow as the woman was herself from what she had heard. Her magic seemed to react, parts seemingly taken offense but another liking the atmosphere.
But she had a job to do and so set off to where she hadn't a clue but if she wandered around looking like she was actually doing something then maybe she would strike lucky.
Or knowing her come face to face with the woman herself.
Round she went. Through halls and casually looking through doors when she could, smiling at the other help who were scurrying around, all in all acting like a maid of the castle would do. She started from the third level as she didn't think a queen who also happened to be a witch would keep her nefarious work so close to the ground floor, so close to delegates and visiting parties.
So that only left her with two to work with. Sighing she began her climb to the next floor where she began the tiring process all over again. Making sure never to be seen before diving in an out of rooms, if she could have used her magic she would have just sensed for the section that housed the most magical energy,
Job done, get curse and be back in time for breakfast…. Ooh, breakfast.
Now that she thought about it the hungrier she got. Looking down the hall back to the steps she wondered if she had time to dash to the kitchens once her rescue mission was done. It wasn't as if anyone knew who she was and so nodded, it was a plan with a new bounce in her step wondering what kind of food would be served she kept up her search now with a goal at the end that wasn't just about a sleeping curse.
After what seemed like the seventeenth room she was pissed. Seriously all these rooms and not one of them happened to be a magical potions lab that contained a stolen sleeping curse from a vengeful angry dragon that was one negative remark away from setting the white kingdom alight, yeah she needed to try another route.
Not that it hadn't bothered her before as history had shown with George's Kingdom, she suddenly hadn't grown a moral conscious either, she was just making sure that no one decided to form a lynch mob and come after them since they all knew by now just what had happened at the battle of the wastelands.
If the blonde did come in retaliation of her missing curse then chances are the witch queen would want to take a pot shot in show of her reign. That was why she needed to find it before that happened. But so far she hadn't had any luck. Sighing she shut the last door of the floor and lifted her eyes to the ceiling, and the one above.
It was unlikely she would have based anything of importance up there. Hell the more she took the time to think about it, she hadn't at all felt any magical signature that indicated the presence of the other woman. Maybe she wasn't here, her real throne was after all the Merovingian Kingdom was where she truly sat and so wondered if that was where she was now.
She hurried back down the steps to the bottom floor. The more she pushed out the more she felt her hunch about the other woman was right. Finally getting to the ground floor she was about to head for the doors, if she wasn't here than chances are her side projects wouldn't be either.
Most likely the White castle was used for balls and grand events. A mockery to the spoils she usurped, it was no secret that the White Kingdom was the most prosperous in the realm and so even if she didn't use it for her important stuff – the lavish side she could hold here. Knowing that her time had been in vain here she was set to leave but stopped at the last minute.
Daniel.
He would still be here. He was after all, a stable hand and so would be working with the horses. Grinning at the prospect of seeing him again she wasted no time in rushing down the hall. She had been remiss in her actions that it had taken so long to come and see him. But with all that had happened she didn't think it safe or wise to attempt to contact when Cora was establishing her stronghold.
Plus she had other priorities that took her time. It kept her away and with the recent sleep induced incarceration of Snow, she was sad to say he hadn't been at the forefront of her mind. But now he was the only thing on it as she all but ran down the hall and to the door that led to the court stables.
She ignored the looks she got from the others who had been milling about and hurried over to the large barn where she knew he liked to stay with the horses, her smile was wider than it had ever been given it was early in the morning and her mood was as high and as bright as the sun, she went inside not caring what others thought, a young maid going in to the barns all on her own, what would they say?
She snorted. It wasn't as if they knew who she was or would see her again after this she just needed to see him and so searched the entirety of the barn only to come up empty. She pursed her lips wondering where he could be and so headed for the outside again. She stopped at the entrance as someone came out of a smaller side building attached to the barn.
It was Harold – the stable master, the other man looked older than the last she had seen of him. His face, lined before with crinkles around his eyes, they were put there by laughter and a graceful age, what she saw now though he was more haggard than before his face was unshaven and it seemed he hadn't had a good night's sleep in ages.
Frowning at the sight of him she started her way over to the older man. She knew that life mustn't have been good since the change in monarchy, but surely Cora couldn't have inflicted fear into a simple stable master? He tended the horses, something she doubted the other woman had much time or use for.
"Harold."
Stopping he turned to see the younger woman moving to him as his eyes narrowed on her appearance. He hadn't seen her before, had he? Trying to place her he took in her simple dress with its rough cut and guessed she must have worked in the kitchen. Why she would have a need to speak to him though?
Coming to a stop in front of him she smiled not taking in his still frowning face and silence until he finally broke it. "Can I help you?"
She met his eyes as they portrayed blankness to her person and a frustration as he still tried to work out her name… no he could definitely say he had never met her before.
Her smile never wavered as she nodded. "It's me, I know it's been a while but surely you haven't forgotten me already, have you?"
He kept his gaze on her, he really had no clue who she was and so shook his head. "I'm sorry miss. But you must have me mistaken for someone else, forgive me for saying but I have never seen you around before."
She pulled her head back a little. Finally her smile dimming as she narrowed her own gaze at his tall form. None of them spoke for a while until the realization came to her why; she glanced down to her glamour and fought the urge to hit herself in the head. No wonder he couldn't bloody remember her.
She really was shocked at her own laxness. This is what happened when she fought about the younger stable hand, all else goes out the window. She smiled apologetically before looking around. She knew it was a risky thing what she was about to reveal but she needed to if she were to find Daniel.
"If I show you something, you promise not to say a word to anyone?"
He stared at her still in silence for a moment before he must have figured her to be speaking of something else as his eyes widened, he quickly looked around the court before shaking his head madly.
"I really must not, you seem nice and all, pretty even. But if someone's sees then they will talk." Perplexed she cocked her head slightly to the side wondering why he looked so panicked. It came to her that he had obviously had his reigns crossed and so shook her head wildly in revulsion.
"Oh, no – no that you fool," She sighed and rolled her eyes. "Just, look - go back inside and I will show you." She kept her eyes on him as he seemed to deliberate on whether to believe her before grunting slightly as he nodded.
"Fine – just no funny stuff," He turned missing her scoff as she followed. "Trust me – no issue there."
Shutting the door behind her she turned to find him waiting. His face a mixture of curiosity and slight apprehension about something dastardly she was about to show. Smiling she tried to make light of the tension before taking a deep breath.
"First off, promise me what happens next won't get out."
He stood taller, he knew this was nothing good and moved to the door only to get pushed back. Alarmed he staggered at the force she used to make him step back, he narrowed his eyes again this time with suspicion.
"Say it or whatever you're thinking, I will make happen."
Threat taken he quickly nodded. She gave him a smile again before nodding more to herself. "Ok, well like I said. As I know you it's obvious that I have been here before. You have seen me before – just not in this form."
His suspicion turned into confusion. Knowing it was as good a time as any, she waved her hand over her body as the cloud of purple washed over her, Harold stumbled back nearly knocking over his chair he was that startled and looked on with wide and disbelieving eyes as the cloud fully engulfed her before receding and leaving her original form behind.
He said nothing once he realized who it was. He was still in shock, she kept up her smile to ease the air that had grown thick and keep him calm. He could either once they left – go running to find the nearest guard and alert them to her presence or actually keep her secret like she thought he could do.
Finally after the longest time and his breathing managing to slow to a normal beat, he blinked the water that had built up in his eyes as a result of having them trained on the younger woman who he had seen a sometime a year ago, he remembered her slightly cocky arrogant attitude and had made him smile with her acerbic remarks.
But never did he imagine her to be a magic user. He swallowed the lump in his throat. "So can I trust you to keep that to yourself?" Automatically he nodded, he knew no matter how much t scared him he wouldn't give away her secret.
"Yes,"
That was all she needed. With a beaming grin she nodded her thanks; he still never took his eyes from her as she moved to sit in the chair that had been pushed back.
"It had been a fair bit of time since I have been here I will admit." That seemed to have him alert again as he quickly hurried to the window and pulled the curtain shut.
"Why are you here? Surely you must have heard about the King? How this new queen has taken over and killed him. She pushed the Princess out." Nodding she held up her hand to stop him.
"I know all of that, I also know that Snow is… somewhat safe."
His shock is very easy to read on hearing her mention the exiled princess. "You have spoken to her?" Evidently the incredulous tone was also not easy to mask as she pursed her lips before nodding her head.
"I have."
"Is she safe? Is she alright?" Pausing at his question she ponders on what to say before finally tilting her head a little. "Somewhat"
At his confused look she expands her meaning. "It seems Cora got to her, placed her under a curse of some kind. It's actually the reason I 'am here. It turns out to have been a sleeping curse, one that was taken from a very good friend of mine and so I 'am simply here to get it back."
Taking a deep breath she carries on. "But it appears my time was wasted. As I don't think this is where she keeps anything pertaining to her magical projects, I fear those may be at her first castle."
He nodded not really understanding but it made sense he guessed now that he knew her to be a witch herself. He was horrified though at the thought of the Kingdoms once beloved Princess being cursed. Regina could tell his thoughts from his expressions and added.
"Do not worry – she is well looked after and is being protected by more than just her friends, trust me no one can get to her" He smiled mollified by her answer as he ran a hand over his face, this was more than what he imagined for this day as he spied her looking around.
"If you know now that the curse is not being held here. Why are you still around?" His question wasn't mean more curious as she faced him again, a hint of a smile crossing her lips.
"I came to see Daniel."
Her response made his heart stop. It had been a while since anyone had mentioned the former stable hand in his presence; they all knew how much the younger man meant to him. The family he never had and knew better or face his anger. But she hadn't been here and so didn't know. Instead he tried to bury the welling anger that rose instantly on the sound of the other man and closed his eyes.
Regina watched as his whole demeanour changed. She could feel his mixed emotions and were astonished to feel deep sorrow within the middle, all at once her joyous mood, little by little – started to fade the more she looked at him.
"Harold."
Fighting to keep what moisture had gathered in his eyes he sniffed and lifted his head to meet her gaze. Her face had dropped any semblance of a smile as she gazed at him.
"Where is Daniel?"
He looked to the floor for a moment gathering his thoughts before looking back at her, "When the Queen first took over. None of us were expecting it she came so fast, everything was chaos. Soldiers fighting, people screaming and the guards struggling to try and get the King and princess to safety, in the midst of the panic and rush it seemed on her orders a fire was lit."
She listened, her jaw firm and tensing the more he spoke on the day Cora took over. "We tried to move as many of the horses as we could. If we could get them to the King then he could use them to escape with his guard, we were close getting them all out but then a noise had us turning to see one of the new-born foals panicking, he had frozen within the doorway and of course when a fire is about you need to get out by what exit you can, the queen's guard knew this but the horse was in the way of the only door so they tried to move it by means of force.
Well Daniel as you know, loves horses more than he did humans I was sure. He rushed back, I tried to get him to stop but he ran up to the scared baby and the man beating him and pushed him off – he was only trying to help the horse but the other man saw it as an attack on his person and so—"
She held up her hand. Her own eyes had been collecting tears the further the story went on – she didn't need to hear anymore as he had dropped to her chest.
"He's dead"
She could feel his nod rather than look up and see it – she didn't want to, all that she knew was that the one person who she felt more deeply that wasn't family, the one person she could have seen herself loving, was gone.
She tried hard not to picture his smiling face or the way he laughed before hugging her, but now she could feel it all. It hurt and now she had wished more than ever she had come before now – if she had maybe he would have been saved. He watched as her body slumped in a little and her face scrunch slightly with a pain he had long ago felt,
He moved over to her and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. She turned her head so not to let him see the few tears sliding down her cheeks.
"If it helps, I do remember him saying about you, wouldn't shut up really. It was 'Regina this, Regina that' he was besotted by you."
She nodded. It didn't help; all it did was further the pain that was building rapidly in her chest that once again she had let him slide in her list. He should have been more important and she hated herself for it. Harold felt her shoulder stiffen – he knew this to, he had blamed himself for not stopping the younger lad when he had the chance.
He knew she would beat herself up over his death when it wasn't their fault. So bending, he lifted her face gently to see the silver tracks that had formed on her face as he used his thumb to wipe them away.
"It's is no one's fault my dear, he wouldn't want anyone to think that especially you." He smile was one of loving, a fatherly one as he aimed to make her feel better, she tried to smile she really did, but she couldn't get her muscles to work.
It was somebody's fault. It wasn't her own that much he had right. It wasn't his either, not even the man who had killed him though she did wish he was there to feel her wrath a thousand times the pain she would have liked. Though not knowing who he was she instead decided that the only person responsible for the death of what could have been her future.
Cora.
That really for her, was the last straw.
She bolted upright startling him into nearly falling back as he looked at her new posture – it was stiff but not with guilt – it was anger, her face mirrored her posture an ugly look that didn't belong on someone so pretty as the air grew thicker than ever before. It was almost harder to breathe thn before when it were filled with sadness.
"Oh I know it's not our fault. The only one to blame is that bitch! She did this, she killed him – and now she will pay." Without giving him a second to speak the door slammed open making him jump as she stormed out. Not caring about her cover he could only watch her go as she vanished back inside the castle.
He stared at her, a feeling of strange acceptance coming over him. He knew it would be the last he saw of her, he knew this place no longer had a draw to her and if he wasn't carrying on in the younger man's memory he too would have left.
She stormed down the halls not caring who was in her way, those smart enough to see an angry woman jumped and bolted out of her way as she passed. Those that didn't got a shock to find themselves pushed roughly to the side. They watched her go with wide eyes until she pushed on the double doors and left, once more not caring if there were any guard around.
She made it to the end of the road before disappearing. She really did not care if anyone saw her as she materialized outside the mines. She knew she should have gone home and tell the blonde of the change in plans but she couldn't do that – she was far too angry and sad and if she were honest, they were feelings she never really had at the same time.
Yes she could have been angry at one point and then sad, or vice versa. But never at the same time – it was unsettling and she found it brought about thoughts and wants that normally they wouldn't have before and she knows once again it's her fault. Caring little if she was caught she blasted her way through the wards that held strong around the entrance before making her way inside.
She knows it would have alerted someone. Either dwarves who would in turn rush to tell the fairies she didn't care; if they came she would deal with them. Right now she needed her friend.
She would have gone to the older woman but it was one of those things that the Faerie really had never talked to her much about. Plus she didn't know about Daniel, whereas the wolf woman did and so she was the only one who could help.
She didn't have to follow anyone this time. The scent showing her the way and soon she was standing at the doors that held the coffin on the other side. She held out her hand and like pulling on a handle she jerked back her arm as the creaking of the gates saw them wrench open seconds later.
The sound was enough to alert Ruby who whipped around. Her gaze trained on the door half fearing that Cora had found her location and was coming to finish the job, she tensed her body waiting, she didn't know how much she could defend her friend but she was going to and so braced herself only to stare as Regina walked through.
At first she smiled on seeing the other woman. She had not been gone long but probably it didn't take her that much to find the curse; she did have a better nose then her after all. But her first thought quickly vanished on seeing the state of her on a second look. Her friend looked…
The redness around her eyes had told her she had been crying. That was something that startled her seeing as she had never seen her cry before Regina was the most infallible person she knew – always there when she needed her, risked her life so many times to save her and her family, and really was everything the other woman secretly envied.
But now she looked like a wreck. Her hair was in messed, her face streaked with dried tears and her eyes were slightly puffy, her shirt was ripped in some places but most of all she looked so defeated. The brunette could only stare in stunned silence as Regina moved trance like to where she stood. Her eyes never leaving the ground and almost looked like she was going to walk right passed her, when it looked like she wasn't going to stop Ruby reached out her hand.
"Regina."
She slowed the other woman's movements as the raven haired witch seemed to be lost. She called her name again and watched as she lifted her head, only seeming to see her when their eyes met. She gave the other woman a once over, baffled by the change when not that morning she was joking with a fallen Fae.
"Regina please, tell me what's wrong?"
She stared at her though her eyes never really seem to focus, they looked still blurred at times looked like she was staring behind her until eventually she replied, in such a timid way it scared the wolf woman to hear as she spoke.
"He's dead."
Ruby cocked her head a little wondering who it was she was on about. Regina gave no more explanation leaving her to try work it out as she ran her mind back, she had gone to the White Kingdom and so she went over all who they might have met on their trips there as her face paled when she finally focused on the one face that came to mind.
"Daniel."
Regina nodded. Her tears returning on hearing his name as Ruby pulled her into a crushing hug, the sobs that rocked her body shook the taller brunette who was holding her friend tight soothing her, and trying to calm her tears. The nails that were digging into her arms threatened blood but she ignored the pinching in favour of the distraught woman.
Lifting her head so their faces were near each other, Ruby tried to stem her tears as she ran her hands over her face in a bid to remove the hair and wetness that covered before she spoke.
"Oh Regina, how"
Unable to speak due to her voice having been choked off by her heaving tears, it took the other woman a few minutes to reply but she did so with heavy words.
"He died trying to save a young horse from harm. On the day Cora sacked the castle and ordered a fire. He was getting the horses out when he heard one in the barn, where the fire had spread and he looked to see it panicking. There were people inside, her guards who caused the blaze, they tried to escape but it was blocking the way and so they were hitting it, trying to make it move."
She stopped as her words cut off as she pictured what only could have happened on that day as Ruby rubbed her arm in comfort. "He ran back and pushed the man who was hitting the horse, all he wanted to do was save him but the man… he killed him Ruby, stabbed him because he thought he was attacking."
She lifted her head in a bid to stop more tears from falling but she failed. Ruby could do nothing but help, her own eyes wetting as she looked on at her friend who was in pain. She knew how Regina felt about the stable hand, she had spoken of him fondly – she was greatly but pleasantly surprised to hear her speak in a tone that held affection as it was something rare from the dragon woman.
She couldn't say she knew the pain she felt as she had yet to meet someone she felt so strongly about, she also didn't know just how far in regards to those feelings ran as she had never truly asked. But they must have been deep if she was in such a state that it unnerved her to see.
After a while of leaning on her shoulder, Regina finally stopped crying. She wiped her face rubbing away what tears stains remained as she tried to make sense of her jumbled thoughts, but no matter what she tried to work out ignore, the one fact that burst through - the one name that kept coming to her, scorching across her brain like wildfire was that of the Queens.
"She did this"
Her voice had the other woman looking down as she saw the sudden shift in mood. She allowed her to sit up as she looked at the way Regina's eyes darkened as her thought took her to the woman she felt was personally responsible for the death of the stable hand.
"Who"
"Who else - the one who has been a plague on this land, the one who had caused nothing but misery to all and has attacked Snow and hurt you,"
Ruby figured now it was the queen she was talking about and so moved a little so she could better see the other woman. "Cora?"
Regina nodded silently. "She might not have been the one with the sword. But she did give the order for the fire. If she hadn't there would have been no need to get the horses out. He wouldn't have had to save the baby horse. She did this she killed him and now she has hurt us all for the last time."
Ruby's stomach gave a small lurch at the underlying meaning in the slightly menacing tone as she looked to her friend. "What do you mean?"
She didn't speak right away, but then took a deep breath and without any hesitation replied. "I'm going to get rid of her,"
Shocked, Ruby was about to respond but noise had her turning her head. It came from the gates and they bolted up just in time to see the small dwarves. Both women watched as they charged through like they were going to war, one with a pick axe raised and the rest with small weapons.
They ran right into the middle – two splitting off as they moved to the coffin. All the while keeping a watch out for intruders who might have been there for the princess as the rest turned to Ruby who still looked on in surprise
"What's happening?"
Grumpy, the small ring leader it seemed moved over to her with two others as he spoke. "Was told that something had breached the wards, the fairies are in a panic as whatever it was had torn them right down. Destroyed them completely and so they are out front trying to find out what could have done it, we're here to make sure the princess is safe, we—"
It was only then he noticed Regina standing next to the tree. His face looked a little confused at seeing her there but then it turned into realization and lifted his axe prompting the others to follow both wondering what was happening.
"Who are you?"
His tone wasn't pleasant or friendly which wasn't surprising given his name as he kept his eyes on her, suspicion clear throughout as she smiled a little in amusement.
"I'm a friend of Snow's" She was cut off by his small scoff as he shook his head both standing as tall as he could and reaffirming his grip on the axe.
"Don't think so, sister. Would have seen you before now, wolfy here has been only one keeping watch on Snow no one else… you did this; you broke the wards didn't you? How"
In spite of her earlier sorrow and anger his stance served to cheer her up as she arched a brow at his instant questioning, she went to reply but looked to the clearing as a small distortion in the air had her bracing for seconds later to see a small glittering cloud form.
It was blue – just like the blondes which confused her as when it finally receded, it left behind a small fairy in its wake. Her eyes trained on the miniature creature with rapt interest, it was the first time she had ever seen a fairy up close that wasn't fallen. The fairy looked around before spotting Grumpy.
She took a small step back as it flew rather fast and was next to them before she could really blink and she watched from the shade.
Though small, the voice that came from the tiny fairy was strong and authoritative. Regina eyed the little bug wondering whether all fairies were like that or was this in a position of leadership perhaps as she observed them speak.
"Blue,"
The dwarfs greeted her with a small bow as Grump turned around, "They had to call you down here?" She nodded a little stiffly at hearing his tone of voice but nevertheless replied.
"They had to. For whatever it was that broke through to the mines completely obliterated our wards, damaging the spells placed around. The others were wary and so rightly so which was why I was informed. I hope to recreate the barriers with stronger enchantments and quickly, before the perpetrator returns."
She kept her flight at a steady level before lowering her head. "Have you found anything that might look out of place? Is the Princess safe?"
He nodded, his face still a picture of annoyance before he jerked his head to the tree by the right of them. She frowned and turned to look only to flitter back as the wave of magic that pulsed around had her nervous.
But still she had her duty and even though she was apprehensive she faced the shadows the tree offered and spoke loudly. "Whoever you are, I warn you, if you are here to hurt the Princess, we have dust that can render you incapable of doing so until the proper authority get here if you come out now we might go lenient on you."
Regina snorted. From the sounds of it this bug didn't do fair, if she did it was one sided but still she mused on the idea for a few seconds before deciding to make an appearance. Rounding the tree she slunk from underneath the branches and out into the open coming to a stop next to Ruby.
Blue reared back when Regina stepped into the light. The little fairies horror on feeling such magic as it crashed into her made her scared for everyone around, even more so when she recognized a scent of magic that could only belong to one kind of person. One who she hadn't seen in years and was determined to never allow anyone to go in the direction she had taken.
She saw her stopping next to the brunette. A nice girl who had arrived tear stricken when Snow had first been cursed, she knew what she was but she could so see the goodness in her, the fierce friendship she had with the younger woman and the drive to protect her at all costs which was why she never did anything to prevent her from staying.
But this was different. So far different from a wolf. She knew that fairy dust could only do some much against a magic this raw, the stench was potent and the power was threatening to engulf her own, along with the Fae's own magic she could detect another – this other was distinctively darker which didn't make her any less relaxed as she faced the newcomer.
It was then she saw her stand next to the other woman and her fear for the sweet wolf rose. "Good lord girl, get away from her – quickly!"
Ruby frowned not understanding as she turned to face Regina who was still doing her best to hide her smirk. "Why?"
Blues tiny eyes widened as she stared at the blank look being given. "Why? She's full of magic,"
"Yeah – I know."
"Dark magic- wait, you know?" Suddenly the fear she had for Ruby fast turned into suspicion. Just like Regina she eyed the brunette with shrewd eyes as Grumpy looked from one to the other,
"What do you mean you know? Are you to say you know this woman? That you know she is a witch of the darkest arts." At the side of her Regina scoffed earning a glare from all across. Ruby frowned deeper at the accusations against her friend, sure she knew Regina had magic – a lot of it, she also knew that the other woman wasn't exactly a model example when it came to moral upstanding, she knew that when Georges son was presented to him dead at his feet.
But she also knew Regina would never hurt anyone she cared about. No matter how angry she got the one thing she never dared do was strike at those she held in regard. The wolf woman was thankful she was one of them. And the rest of her family as she shook her head.
"Yes she has magic, but she isn't evil. I know because she has helped me before. She saved my life and those of my family," Blue still stared, distrust in her eyes but it was aimed more at the witch who smiled and waved, she knew she would love pissing this fairy off and she was right.
"Are you aware that she might have been tricking you? Lulling you into giving her your trust until the time was right and when you didn't expect it, she would strike."
"Oh, have you even heard yourself, you jumped up little bug." Regina finally chimed in as she looked over to the hovering fairy, Blue drew herself up, her face a picture of disbelief at having been insult and half justified at being right in her thinking's she replied to the witch her voice less than friendly.
"If you haven't come here to harm what have you come for?"
Finally deigning to turn back to her, Regina eyed the fairy with a slow once over. Her face boarding her irritancy and boredom before she replied.
"My friends,"
"Likely stories, those who deal in the dark don't have friends. They merely have tools they use until they no longer have a purpose." Fighting the urge to snap and do exactly what the blue midget feared. She schooled her face into a look of indifference before responding.
"Contrary to what you believe, you narrowed minded, mosquito. I do have friends, case in point Ruby here and snoozing beauty over there."
Blue looked to the cursed princess on her remark as she glanced between them. "You, friends with the fairest of them all?" Her tone was sceptical and almost mocking which made the raven haired woman clench her first in a sudden overwhelming desire to roast her wings off her little body but nodded all the same.
"Well I wouldn't exactly say the fairest of them all, not when you see her in the mornings but yes, we are friends," She held up her hand when it looked like the fairy was about to say something else, no doubt dismissing her claims.
"Well alright then oh virtuous one, tell me this? Where have you been when coming to find a solution into helping Snow? Because I've been here twice now and not once did I see any sign of little glittery wings flapping about if you're so honour bound to follow a rule that states you help those in great need, how come I'm the only one who has been looking for a dam answer to our problem!"
Her voice was sharp and a little high as she shot a dark glare at the stammering fairy who for the most part looked like she had been slapped in the face. Regina knew that only a real slap would make her feel better but settled for making her look bad as she waited for her to reply. Of course she should have known that she would gloss over the part about helping and go straight for the admittance she had let loose.
"You've been in here twice? How" Tilting her head to the side, she allowed a lazy smile to cross her lips showing a bit of white which looked menacing to the diminutive creature.
"Because I'm just that good - I know it and so do you, that's why you have a problem with me… well that and the fact I know your old friend."
She arched her brows in a taunt to the silent mentioning of the blonde as she smirked once more at the affronted and hateful look both she and if she had been there – Maleficent would have been getting.
"She is no longer my or any friend to the fairies. What she did was a disgrace to our community and quite frankly everything that befell her she deserved."
Blue had to dodge the fireball that flew her way. Regina snarled angrily and had to be stopped from walking as she murderously glared at the small creature.
"Don't you, EVER call her that. Maleficent is twice the person you will ever be, considering what happened I'm surprised she hasn't burnt your pathetic coven into the ground where it belongs."
Ruby looked from one to the other confused as the rest who was staring. Blue, once over her fright lifted herself higher and sniffed a little before calmly responding.
"I suppose she told you the story of what happened?" Regina nodded "Then I can say that she only told you half the story. Her half - anything to make us look bad."
"She didn't need to. I can tell by looking at you, just what a two faced, backstabbing traitorous bitch she said - no story needed. Is it any wonder she hates you? I dislike you already and if it weren't for Ruby, I would have gladly ripped those wings from your back and forced you to eat them."
"See. This is what living with that… half breed does. She messes with people – twists them from good to evil. But I don't believe you at all in anyway have ever been so; given you are the same after all."
The three dwarves lifted their heads to stare at her on those words. Grumpy, who had been confused since the first insult spoke for all of them.
"What do you mean?"
Regina watched as Blue, now gaining control back of the conversation placed her hands in front of her and looked at them all like one would a recalcitrant child before speaking, her tone all sorts of patronizing.
"This witch also happens to the second Dragon that has been seen with the fallen one, the one who helped slaughter innocents all for the show of their power."
Regina spat back ignoring the wide eyes staring at her on Blue's revelation "Please, they came after us first; we only did what any other would have done to defend their home. But I guess a sanctimonious firefly like you wouldn't call it that would you? How anyone can stand to be around such loathsome little pests like you, I'll never know"
"The same reason why anyone with a right mind would have run as fast as they could in the other direction when faced with such dangerous and vile committers to evil is a thought beyond this realm."
Her statement – though never taking her eyes off the angry witch was clearly aimed at Ruby who turned to look at her, their eyes met for the briefest of seconds before the wolf woman shrugged.
"Never been known for my logical thinking" She threw out casually gifting the fairy with a wolfish grin making her bristle at the rub off but she says no more afterwards.
The air was filled with strained tension that promised a messy break should they stay around each other even more. Regina, having had enough of the company and finally coming up with a way to her problem she shrugs the taller woman off.
Ruby lifted her hands from Regina's shoulders as soon as she felt the brush off. Seconds later, she steps away as they watched her move.
"Where you going?"
Regina glanced to the brunette before replying. "I've found a way to get rid of the queen. I'm going to see if it's still there."
"Queen Cora?"
Regina turned to look at Blue who has spoken this time as she sneered. "No, the queen of Dido – of course Cora you stupid midget. That bitch has lived for too long, its time someone did something about that."
She gave a nod in the direction of her friend to show she wasn't being ignorant as Ruby smiled back. "If you do fancy yourself being useful, then find a way to help Snow's prince out of his prison. I'm sure he'll be needed, right now I have a meeting to keep."
With that she threw up her hand and once more they took a step back as they watched the purple cloud encircle around the body before she vanished from the clearing.
She arrived in the small village west of the mountains. She hurried from the forest and into the secluded town, jumping the steps and knocking loudly on the door; she waited anxiously for a few moments hoping that he was still in and hadn't decided to move. It had been a while since she had last been here and so wanted him badly to still be here.
The sound of a latch being undone had her standing upright as soon the door was pulled back and Archibald poked his head out. He squinted a little in the sunlight but opened his eyes wider on recognizing the person standing in front of him.
"Regina?"
She nodded giving him a terse smile. "Hello, Archibald. I have a question only you can answer."
Once she was inside. Made quicker by his eagerness to have her company, they sat on the sofa with tea in hand as he smiled jovially at her, "You look good. The north been keeping you?"
She nodded, "It's been…always has been, an experience let's just say." He laughed gruffly and sipped his tea. She had always wondered why a man such as himself drank tea and never alcohol as he placed the cup on the side and looked at her.
"From the way your sat my dear, I can tell this is no social call." Her smile faded as she recalled the reason for her visit, and nodded almost guiltily.
"I'm afraid not. Something has happened recently that has made me no longer able to sit around and idly watch as other dither on whether to take action. If that needs to be done then it has to be so by ones capable of performing such a task and not leave it to the weak willed."
"I take it you mean it's a magical task." Again she nodded. She lifted her cup to her lips thinking about the reality of what she is going to ask, if she does manage to then that means she would be taking her on, no backing out. It wasn't like she was ever one for running from a fight anyway but what the after effects could mean should she succeed.
Rumple was watching his daughter get lost in her thoughts. He knew a day like this would come. Had been waiting for a long time now and was looking forward to it, not because he got to spend time with her though it had been a long time since he had. But it was the beginnings of the countdown to the curse.
He had long ago perfected the final formula. All he needed was for her to return. Whilst she did he made busy by obtaining the hairs needed for the true loves potion and finding a person with enough power and resilience who could enact the curse – that was easier said than found. For months he searched.
Every one that came by who had magical talent he put through rigorous tasks in order to prove their worth. But most failed after the first maybe second round. He had despaired, was there nobody within this stupid realm that had enough power to perform a curse? Granted it was complex and masterfully crafted.
It was he after all who made it so why wouldn't it be but the fact that barely anyone had enough power to sustain a telekinetic hold never mind a spell such as this, he sighed. He knew at least three others who had the capacity and the tenacity but he didn't want Regina doing it, he wasn't going anywhere near Zelena, the crazy red head who he had finally gotten rid of - another story for another time he decided.
Lastly the Faerie. But he knew that was a stickler. He knew that the blonde hated all and cared for no one so wouldn't mind sending them all to another land, well that wasn't entirely true, he knew she did care for the younger woman and probably the only one which also meant she would have to give her up if he tried to persuade her to perform the task.
Again not going to happen. So he was left with simple tricksters and whiny people who couldn't sustain a fireball. It really did make him weep (Metaphorically) about the lack of adequate magic holders in the enchanted forest. So he searched further a field and luckily found someone with at least enough strength to cast the curse.
He was the court sorcerer of Agrabah, and as per the deal. Once he cast the curse Rumple would give him a far better position in the royal court then the one he had, as much as being the sorcerer was good, it came with far too much burden and chores he had to do for the monarchy.
The man fancied himself a Duke or a Baron and so Rumple smiled and said he could make him just that.
Fool, if the curse reached far enough then he would be a lord of sand and empty houses. If he insisted of not being effected by the curse then he would be the only one in a deserted realm. He gave him two weeks before he went mad.
But he now had his fool. Next he needed to make sure that the loves potion was stored somewhere safe and who better really then a temperamental dragon that was feared by all. Of course he had no time to go ask her and so he enlisted the gullible prince with him out the way it left him free to tie up any loose ends.
The biggest loop in the rope was the Queen who had been extending her claws like an un-domesticated cat and scratching anyone within reach, he was just sad to see that the last person before her demise had to be the woman in front of him. But it was why he was here. He knew this day would come so once more he donned his disguise he also knew just what it was she would be asking for and so had made sure to keep it well looked after until she did.
He placed his now empty cup on the side once more if he wanted to set this curse off before the limit he set then he needed to push her, looking he coughed gently which seemed to bring her out of her train of thoughts to see him staring.
"So my dear, you said you wanted to ask me something."
On leaving his small house she stopped on the porch and inhaled deeply. She wasn't going home, she knew that if she did then the anger would die down leaving her with more thoughts then she wanted. Right now the hate and fury was giving her the adrenaline she needed. Item safely in her pocket, she moved down the steps and back into the woods.
Hitting the first sign of cover she let her magic take her. She was going to see this through to the end, so she moved on to her last and final destination. Hopefully to stop her once and for all.
Rumple felt her magic leaving the area which he took as his cue to also leave as he wiped the room once more of any magical signature before changing back to his normal self and set off back to his home once more. He could feel in the air a shift – like the winds had turned and for once not in Cora's favour.
"Change is coming, little Millers daughter," He muttered on looking out his window. "And it's coming for you."
