Chapter 8

"Trevor, RUN!" Brian breathed, pushing the child away from him, shouting "GO! GO TREVOR! RUN!"

Panic fueled the small boy as he pumped his arms, sprinting across the pale sand. His jacket flapping against his back as his hearts pounded through his tiny chest.

"YOU IDIOT! What kind of solider loads their gun with blanks?!" Simeon spat.

"I'm sor..."

"DON'T APOLOGIZE! Catch the brat and chain him. GO!"

Clara's voice echoed through his skull. "Trevor! Don't stop! We're almost there; past that hill! WAIT, STOP!"

Trevor's foot caught a gap in the ground, sending him face first into the sand. Scrambling to stand, he froze. Slowly looking up, his gaze was met with a pair of tan army boots.

"Get up." Commanded an American accented voice.

Responding with a gulp, Trevor remained still.

"Trevor! What are you doing? Do what he says!" Clara begged.

"No."

Gasping at his interjection she hissed his name.

"Did you just tell me no?" Crouching down to the child's level, the pale blue eyes pierced through him. "If you know what's good for you, I suggest doing everything that is asked of you. Understood?"The solider inched closer to his face, straining to hear Trevor's inaudible response. "Speak up kid, I can't hear you."

He looked into the man's piercing stare. "I said you should cover your eyes."

"TREVOR, NO!"

The solider furrowed his brows "What?"

Hesitating no longer, Trevor threw a handful of sand into the young man's face, then darting between his legs, ran for the hill.

"AAHH! You little!" The man screamed, angrily rubbing at his eyes. Breaking into a sprint, he chased after the little boy. Hot on his tail he stuck his hand out. "Nice try…"

Before Trevor knew what had happened, his feet were thrown in front of him while his body was pulled back. "No!" he panicked, his breathing becoming labored as he tried to struggle his way out of his jacket.

Whipping the kid around, they faced the direction that they originally came from. In the distance Brian Williams figure could be seen kneeling in the wet sand. Standing over him was Doctor Simeon and a faceless white figure. "You see that?" he angrily growled. At that moment they watched as a right hook was thrown at Brian's jaw. He felt Trevor tense at the sight. "Does that scare you? Does it alarm you that they have no problem hurting your grandpa? Well does it?" his voice rising with each sentence. He could sense that he was frightening the child, but it had to be done. "If you keep trying to run this is what's going to happen. Your grandfather's blood will be on your hands. Do you want that?"

"No."

"Then I suggest you stop throwing sand and start following commands."

"Why do you care?" the child croaked.

Dropping his voice as he placed handcuffs on the boy. "Because I've promised to keep you alive...My heads on the line to kid, and if you keep trying to run, neither of us is going to make it very far."

"So then you're a good guy?"

He responded with a quiet chuckle, "Far from it. I'm merely an ex time agent...but that remains between the two of us."

The small child nodded, understanding that it was better to not ask any more questions.

"Good. Now squeeze out some tears, and act like I threatened to kill you."

Carefully taking a step forward, Clara took in her surroundings. Managing to enter yet another dream, she found herself standing in a backyard lined with bushes and a large stone wall covered with vines. A giant tree was planted in the middle of the yard and beneath it were a table and two chairs. River was seated in one, looking off into the night sky.

Hello my wonderful readers! I apologize for the long delay but I've had to make a few slight changes to this chapter, because things are not panning out how I originally intend for it. While barely noticeable, the changes should make writing the following chapters easier on myself. I appreciate the ongoing support and patience!

As always, please leave any comments, questions, or suggestions in the review section!

Thank you!
