Chapter 9
Carefully taking a step forward, Clara took in her surroundings. Managing to enter yet another dream, she found herself standing in a backyard lined with bushes and a large stone wall covered with vines. A giant tree was planted in the middle of the yard and beneath it were a table and two chairs. River was seated in one, looking off into the night sky.
"I've always loved this backyard. I used to meet my mum here and we would chat for hours over a bottle of wine…just the two of us." River smiled at the nostalgia. "Well don't just stand there darling, take a seat."
"River I…"
Raising a hand to interrupt the girl, River shook her head. "Please. Sit." Motioning to the adjacent chair "Clara darling, don't make me use my mum voice."
Laughing to herself, the young woman nodded and crossed the yard, sitting on the cool metal chair next to the Doctor's wife. Leaning across the table, she placed a reassuring hand on top of River's, making sure to give it a tight squeeze before saying "He's safe. Quite the fighter, I can imagine that he gives you a run for your money."
River breathed a sigh of relief followed by a slight chuckle. "Yes, well he has both of his parents to thank for that I suppose."
"Trevor may have more to thank you for than just his DNA…"
Turning her head to face Clara, River raised an eyebrow. "How so?"
"Do you know any retired time agents?"
Rivers eyes focused on her glass as she swirled the last of her wine. "As a matter of fact…I do. Why do you ask?"
"Well it seems that the Great Intelligence has a double agent on their hands."
Nodding at Clara's assumptions, River leaned back into her chair as she began to explain, "His name is Jack Harkness. He's a friend of the Doctor's, and I trust him almost as much as I trust my husband."
"But if he's a friend of the Doctor's, why didn't Trevor recognize him?"
"Well… I never said they've formally met. We have a few allies that owe some favors, so… when I was pregnant with Trevor, I paid Jack a visit." She responded with a shrug.
Raising an eyebrow and giving a smirk, Clara snickered. "Oh did you now?"
"Mmmm yes, well let's just say it took a little persuasion." River hid her cheeky gaze behind her wine glass.
"River! What would the Doctor think?"
"What? The Doctor doesn't mind a little gun wielding." The blond woman countered. "Although I will admit, Jack did seem to like it as well… Oh Clara darling, don't look so concerned, I would never be unfaithful to my Doctor. I can show you, if you like."
"Show me?" Clara gasped as the backyard disappeared around her, and leaving an underground laboratory in its place. "River…where are we?"
"Torchwood, October 6th 2010 to be exact. And look who it is, isn't he dashing?" The two women watched as the Doctor came rushing down the stairs.
"River!?" The Doctor called, sighing at a lack of response and began to mutter to himself. "I tell her to not wander and stay safe in the TARDIS, and she does the exact opposite…you think I would have learned by-…" The Doctor's head jerked to the left at the sound of crashing. "River!"
"In here sweetie!"
The Doctor groaned as he enter the room. "River, as much as I love you with a gun, must it be this way?"
Clara laughed at what she was seeing. The projection of River stood in the middle of the room, with a gun held towards Jack. Despite the situation at hand, Jack seemed perfectly content in the position he was standing.
"Quite the friend you got here, Doc. I like a woman with a strong grip." Being sure to end with a little wave of the eyebrow.
"Oh shut it." River snapped.
"It was merely just a compliment." Turning his attention to the Doctor, he smirked. "What can I do for ya?"
"Well first you can apologize to my wife. She normally loves a good compliment, but in her current state I wouldn't test her." The Doctor sent a wink towards River as she slowly lowered her gun.
"Really? You're married? Well how about that, congratulations! Oh, and I completely apologize mama; I had no idea the Doctor was capable of marrying such a beautiful woman."
The Doctor shifted his bowtie as he blushed, "Yes, well I suppose I am rather lucky."
"Gentleman, while I admire the conversation…" River removed a chain holding a TARDIS key, from around her neck, lifting the perception filter that once concealed their hidden secret. "Let's speak of the matter at hand."
Jack stood wide eyed, trying his best not to stare. "Wow… Is it-"
"Yes."
"And it's-"
"Yup, 75 percent to be exact." The Doctor smiled proudly.
"But how?"
The Doctor raised his eyebrows, "Jack, out of all people you should know how it works, I mean blimey you've probably slept with every organ-" River placed a hand on the Doctors arm to cut him off.
"I'm half time lord. It's a long story, I'll tell you some other time, but we really need to get on with this conversation."
"Absolutely." His gentlemen instincts kicking in as he motioned towards a desk and some chairs. "Please, sit. I'd hate to have to watch you stand. By the looks of it, I'd say your, what? Seven in half, eight months."
Jack hopped on the edge of the desk, while River gratefully took the offer, and the Doctor beside her. "You're an impressive guesser, eight and a half, which is why we've come to see you. We need your help."
"We'll I hope I can be of service, but I should remind you, I'm no midwife."
River laughed. "Oh no, it's nothing like that." Grabbing a hold of the Doctor's hand, her voice darkened. "As I'm sure you are aware, in our line of "work", having a child can be risky. There are quite a few… things that would do anything to get their hands on our baby. The Doctor has told me that he trusts you, and that you are a good man. If you are what he says you are, I presume that you will remain loyal to helping us protect our child, because while it has remained a secret, once he is born there is no longer a guaran-"
"I'll do it…on one condition."
The Doctors hand rolled into a tight fist. "Go on."
"You name him Jack."
"What!" Clara shouted
"Shhh, darling. While the Doctor may agree to such absurdity, I do not." The two women returned back to the conversation to find the projection of River, once again standing with a gun to Jack's chest.
"Woah, woah. No need for the gun pointing! I was kidding….but what about being referred to as "Uncle Jack"?"
The Doctor slowly lowered his wife's arm. "River, let's be reasonable here."
Sighing, she let her arm drop to her side. "Fine. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about though. The safety has been on the whole time."
Clapping his hands together, the Doctor grinned from ear to ear. "Haha! Brilliant! River what are you doing? Ow. Ow .Ow . River the nails!"
Through clenched teeth, River snarled "I'm sorry sweetie."
Snatching the gun, Jack released the bullet cartridge before handing it to River. "Here, shoot away. Doc, go get the TARDIS. I may be happy to be an uncle, but my nephew is not being born here!"
"River?"
"Yes Clara."
"I thought Trevor's birthday is not for another week?"
"Yes…well we didn't know that at the time."
