A/N: I'm in such a good mood today! I just saw my SAT and I feel like a fucking genius! Not really, but it's a personal best, better than the first time :D So yeah I had time to update. Thank you holidays! I love having free time!
Also Happy Frozen Anniversary! I can't believe it's been a whole year since this came out. I never thought I would be writing a fanfic on this. Like who saw the movie trailer and said to themselves "Hey, I'm going to write a fanfic on this" or "I'm going to read some"
As always excuse all errors you'll find in here and stuff that doesn't make sense. And hope you can understand what I'm trying to write despite all of them.
Chapter 14: Night Changes
Anna POV
"Elsa!", I yelled as loud as I could. If my sister heard me, she showed no acknowledgment of it. I ran down the steps as fast as I could without falling. It was very hard to so because they were coated in ice, it was dark out here, and I was in somewhat panic mode. It's not everyday you expose your sister's deepest secret to a crowd of guest from different parts of the world on her big day. Elsa was on the edge of the fjord looking into the water.
Good, that should stop her. I thought to myself. Elsa turned in my direction, but her face looked blank. I came to know that face as the one she uses whatever she thinks of something important and of what she's going to do about it. I've seen it a couple times over the years. Whether it's from reading some soul searchy novel or just deciding whether she wants to deal with me or not. She was a real thinker for sure. Always thinking everything through. I knew at least that much about her. I saw Elsa holding something in her hands, but I couldn't tell what it was, other than it was shiny. I nearly tripped for the fifth time on the steps. I stopped for a second to make sure I didn't fall before continuing on. I looked in time to see Elsa stepping on the water and standing on it. Soon she was running across the fjord, with the water her foot touching turning into ice. It looked like she was forming an ice bridge.
"Elsa! Stop!", I shouted as I reached the shoreline. She didn't stop. I wanted to keep running after her, I was going to. But the ice was too slippery. I got a few steps onto the frozen water before I slipped and fell on my knees. Sharp pain started burning on them. Thankfully, with eighteen years of clumsiness behind me, this was nothing new. I was used to this kind of thing.
"Anna!", Hans yelled in concern. He put his arm around me and helped me up. He carefully moved us back to the shoreline.
"Are you alright?", He asked after making sure I was able to stand on my own. But I ignored him. I was too busy looking at the direction where Elsa was going. For someone who never goes out, she sure was fast. Too fast even, no normal person was that fast. Then again Elsa wasn't normal. I wondered if her powers had that affect on her. Her small frame getting smaller the farther she went. I could barely see her. Her platinum hair stood out because the moon was breaking to it. It practically glowing under it. Her magenta cape defying gravity behind her.
"Elsa.", My voice was now raspy from all the yelling. She didn't turned. She just kept going. I half expected my sister to stop at the other shoreline and turn to look at me. She didn't though. She didn't even say goodbye nor even a wave. She just raced over the frozen bridge and didn't look back.
I stood there for a long time hoping that Elsa would come back, though deep down I knew she wouldn't. A hand suddenly found mine, making me jump in surprise. I had forgotten that Hans was with me, he gave me an understanding look and started leading me back. My head turned back, but no sign of Elsa. She's gone. Walking, my foot suddenly stepped on something. Looking down, I saw Elsa's new tiara abandoned. Guilt started to overwhelm me, and I blinked back tears. My fault.
Hans reached down for it and handed it to me. My fingered wrapped themselves around it. It was small and insignificant, but it was my sister's. I looked down at it, everything about it reminding me of not only what I did, but also of her. The blue orb in the center was the exact color of her eyes. It was also a symbol of power, power which belonged to Elsa. This was hers! Being the queen, it was now the center of Elsa's being. Why would she leave this behind? I mentally asked myself.
Before I knew it, we were making our way through the mass of people in the courtyard. Hans was in front of me clearing the way for me. He kept turning to face me, with concern written all over his face, his lips moving. It was then that I realized he was talking to me.
"I'm sorry, what was that?", I asked embarrassed.
"Are you alright?", He asked desperately. All those awful things I said to her. That was very uncalled for. I should have talked to her in private like she asked me to. I should have just given her glove back, which I was still clutching in my hand.
"No.", That was all I could say. I'm a terrible sister. But it wasn't like she was perfect either.
"Did you know?", He asked. We were now heading toward the door that would lead us inside the castle.
I looked into his green eyes, "Yeah, I knew." Even more reason I was terrible. I knew better than to push her, but I did anyway. I knew that her powers reacted to strong emotions at times. I've had my fair share of experience with it. But still. You Anna are better than that. I held up Elsa's stuff to look at them. Sighing in defeat, I put them in the small pockets that were on the side of my dress. I had forgotten that I had pockets. Elsa's tiara was a small thing, so it fitted in nicely, as did her glove.
"How long?", He asked. I thought about this. I tried to think before that awful night many years ago. I remembered Elsa taking me skating in the frozen floor in the ballroom, her arms around my sides to help steady me. I tried to think farther than that. I came with not an image, but a feeling. It was feeling of a cold hand holding mine, but it seemed wrong. Then I realized that it was because I was doing the holding. I was holding that cold hand.
"Anna.", Hans called me, snapping me out of my thoughts. He was wincing in pain, though I didn't know why. I looked down and saw I was squeezing his hand very hard. I let it and mumbled sorry and tried to remember it again. But that very faint feeling was gone. I closed my eyes to conjure it up again. But I couldn't. It resulted in nothing but a faint throbbing pain in the back of my head. I looked down at my left hand. I tried to picture it again, but I couldn't. And that angered me. Hans cleared his throat loudly to get my attention. What were we talking about again? Then I remembered that I hadn't answered his previous question.
"All my life.", I answered. I think that was the truth. I couldn't picture a time in my entire life without knowing about Elsa's uniqueness. Hans simply nodded. He looked like he wanted to ask more, but decided it was enough. I thankful for that as I wasn't in the mood to talk. I just drove my big sister away. She was all I had left and she didn't even look back. That hurt a little. Okay more than a little. A lot. It hurt that she would leave me just like that. I suddenly became aware of how cold it was getting, despite all the warm bodies around, or the fact that it was the middle of summer.
"Look, it's cold! It's cold! The Ice Queen has cursed this land! She must be stopped!", I heard the Duke of Weselton was rambling on as I we were nearing him.
"No wait!", I wanted to stop all those awful things he was saying about my sister. When he saw me, he hid behind the his two guard, pointing a finger at me.
"You! Is there sorcery in you too? Are you a monster too?", He asked with a very accusing tone. It wasn't much of a question. More like he wanted me to confess.
"No. No, I'm completely ordinary.", I said crossing my arms at the cold. I could now see my breath in the air when I talked.
"That's right! She is.", Hans defended me. Seeing how that sounded, he send me an apologetic look that send butterflies in my stomach. "In the best way."
"And my sister's not a monster.", I told the Duke. He just rolled his eyes.
"Yes she is!", He said straightening up. This accusation really didn't sit well with me. I went up to him and towered him since I was thankfully taller than him.
"My sister is NOT a monster.", I jabbed his chest. "And may I remind you, she is still not only the queen, but more importantly my big sister, so I suggest you start showing some respect.", I said angrily through gritted teeth. Hans grabbed my shoulders and pulled me back.
"Why don't we all go inside.", Hans suggested. The Duke grunted in agreement. I didn't want to go, but I went anyway. How dare he say those things! When we were in the ballroom, it was buzzing with so much commotion. Everyone was either going outside to see or heading inside to look from the window. I sat on a chair and Gerda brought me some warm tea to drink. Normally I would be having iced tea this time of year.
"She nearly killed me!", I guess the Duke wasn't done with it just yet. He looked at me expectantly. This guy just loves to ague, doesn't he? But I stayed quiet, sipping my tea. I wasn't about to give him the satisfaction.
"You slipped on ice.", Hans commented next to me.
The Duke glared at him, "Her ice!"
"Look pointing isn't going to solve anything.", Hans said to him. Thank you Hans, someone gets it. I thought as I sipped more of the tea.
"You're right, that's why we must go and stop her before she freezes the world!", He exclaimed.
"Look you! Stop saying those awful things already.", My patience was wearing off already. I hated the way he kept accusing my sister and wanted an angry mob to go after her. I bet he wouldn't be saying those things if she were here with us. I started thinking when he mentioned someone going after her. I should go after her! I could apologized and get her back. They all got quiet and looked at me like I was crazy. It was the same look that Elsa gave me when I told her of my engagement with Hans.
"What?", I must have spoken my thoughts again.
"You're crazy! If you go, she'll freeze you. She's going to freeze us all!", The Duke started pacing back and forth. "Just as it was foretold! That's why we must stop her immediately. Before that happens!"
"Wait, what?", Now I was lost. "What do you mean it was foretold?"
"Anna, you don't know the story?", Hans asked.
"What story? Am I supposed to?", I asked confused. I rubbed my temple. I really didn't know what they were talking about.
"The one of the ruler who could manipulate ice and snow.", Hans patiently answered. I thought about this. I had a faint memory of my late mother mentioning something about it. I remembered being confused by it, because she didn't want to talk of it. I had wanted to question her about it, but I had forgotten about it, so I never did.
"No, not really. I mean, I know of it. I've just never heard it.", I answered, shrugging. "Does that make sense?" I honestly didn't see what this had to do with Elsa running away.
"Really? I mean that old fairy tale originated in Arendelle.", The Duke scoffed, narrowing his eyes at me. I huffed in annoyance. Just call me ignorant already.
"Okay, so how does it go?", I asked since they were going to tell me it anyway.
"Well, here's the short and simple version. Basically what happened was that there was a queen who had the power to control the ice and snow. Then one day, she snapped for no reason and started to freeze everything.", He paused to see my reaction. I nodded him on. "So then her subjects went and well, they ended the eternal winter.", He finished. I noticed that he looked away when he said this. Ended the eternal winter?
I suddenly understood what he meant. "Oh. Um well that's unfortunate for her. What does that have to do with Elsa again?", I thought about this and an ugly idea started forming. "Don't tell she's the queen in the fairy tale!"
"No, Elsa's not the queen in the tale.", Hans eased my tension. "Well you see, as the snow queen laid dying, she foretold that her successor would rise and she would finish what she started with vengeance."
"And what? You guys think it's Elsa? That she's the so called 'successor'? Well she's not." I said crossing my arms. My sister can be cold sometimes, but I know my sister. Not too much, but enough to know it's not her.
"No! Of course not. I don't believe it's Queen Elsa.", Hans quickly said.
"There's more.", The Duke of Weselton said. I hadn't forgotten about him since he was being a little too quiet.
"Really what more could there be?", I asked. The Duke didn't say anything. I looked at Hans to answer it. He didn't seem to want to answer it.
"Um well, the Snow Queen foretold that her successor would be stopped at the hands of a sword.", He said looking down. My breath got caught in my throat. I took a moment to sink this devastating new information in. I replayed everything they said into my head. No, it's not Elsa. Not my sister.
"Elsa is not dying that way because it's not her.", I said it to myself.
"Anna, I know this is hard for you, but just know I'm here for you.", Hans said taking my hand and giving it a gentle squeeze.
"No, it's not my sister.", I stood up. "Look, I know it's not her. I mean look, it can't be her. I don't see any snow. She's not doing anything. I'm not convinced it's her."
"Snow!", A man by the window yelled as if on cue.
"For the love-", I murmured as I went past the door into the courtyard yard. Sure enough, it was snowing lightly. The sky was now covered in dark clouds, the stars and the full moon no longer visible. I went into the middle of the panicking crowd.
"See I told you so!", The Duke looked at the sky in satisfaction and I glared at him. Everyone was looking up in fear at it. I held my hand out and a small snowflake landed on it. It had an odd pattern I had never seen before. I remembered Elsa once telling me that every snowflake was unique and one of a kind. No two were ever the same. Another one landed on my hand. It was smaller with a less pointy pattern. It looked small and vulnerable. Making up my mind as to what I would do, I went back the steps to gain some attention, but they all ignored me. They all looked like they were about to panic. I was about to yell when Hans did it for me.
"Attention everyone!", He said it with such a commanding voice that every stopped to look at him. Soon it was quiet and all eyes were on him. "Princess Anna has something to say.", He finished.
"Stage is all yours.", He whispered, smiling. I sent him a grateful look.
"So okay um first off tonight was accident. My sister was scared. She didn't mean any of this. Tonight was my fault. I pushed her.", I said to my audience, they were all listening intently. "So I'm the one that needs to go after her and fix this." A man rose his hand to speak.
"Yes, you with the black mustache.", I called to him.
"Princess Anna, are you sure you don't want someone else to finish the job? I mean, you grew up with the Ice Queen.", He said scratching the back of his head nervously. The crowd murmured in agreement. I looked at them in disbelief. I took a wild guess that they all knew about that old fable and believed it. How come I'm the only one who didn't know of it?
"Look, I don't intend on mur- murdering my sister.", I found that 'M' word hard to say. "That's because Queen Elsa is going to thaw everything once I talk to her." They didn't seem to believe me.
"Very well Princess Anna, what you say goes.", Someone in the back yelled. Soon the everyone was cheering.
"In the meantime, I want you all to stay calm and stay warm for the time being. I will being back summer and make things right.", With that, I hopped off the steps. Soon, the captain of the guards was making his way to me with my horse. I started walking toward him.
"Anna, wait!", Hans ran from behind, I stopped and turned to face him. "I'm coming with you."
"No Hans, you need to stay here.", I said. He then stood in front of me and crossed his arms.
"Not gonna happen. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't.", He said. I tried to think of something, but couldn't. He saw this and smirked in victory. I suddenly thought of something.
"Here's one for you. I need you here to take care of Arendelle.", I said and walked under him to my horse. I took the black cloak the guard was holding for me and put it on. I then took the reins. Hans opened his mouth to protest but then thought better of it. When he looked into my eyes, he must have seen the desperation because he gave me a slight nod.
"On my honor.", He promised.
"Thank you.", I said, I trusted him to keep an eye on the Duke of Weselton because that old man had me a little worried. With all his straight forward accusations. Plus insulting Elsa in front of me. My hands trembled a little, but not from the cold. It angered me just thinking about it. I then put on the cloak over my shoulders. Hans then helped me mount my horse.
"I leave Prince Hans in charged.", I declared to everyone. Most nodded in approval. I was about to leave when Hans suddenly grabbed my hand.
"Are you sure you can trust her? I don't want you getting hurt.", He said with concern. I almost felt like taking him with me. Almost.
"She's my sister. She would never hurt me.", I reassured him. With that, I snapped the reins on the horse beneath me and started galloping past the gates. At least not on purpose. She would never hurt me on propose. She's not like that.
As I was riding out, I saw that the fjord was freezing over and the snow was increasing. Who knew Elsa was this strong. I looked up at the sky. The night changes too fast sometimes. It was warm and full of light and now it's cold and dark. I shrugged the cold air off. If Elsa was strong enough to create this, then surely she could undo it as well. Elsa's going to stop this winter and everything will go back to normal. And my sister was definitely not a monster. She's going to undo everything and prove everyone wrong.
That thought alone put me in a good mood and brought a smile to my face. She's not the so called successor, I just know it. I looked at the dark sky again, thinking of how Elsa was out there somewhere under the same sky. No matter how the night changes, it won't change what I think of my sister. She'll always be my family. I thought about the fear I saw on Elsa's face when I pushed her too far in the ballroom. There's nothing to be afraid of. Even with the night changing, it will never change me and you. I will fix this. I snapped the reins and made the horse run faster. It's not Elsa.
Hans POV
Anna had left about an hour ago to after her sister. Everyone was now trying to warm up from the freezing temperatures. I should have made Anna dressed warmly before she headed out. Hopefully she'll be alright. I needed her alive a little longer if this was going to work. In the meantime, I had a part play. I make everyone like me. Shouldn't be too hard, Anna already left me in charged, they already thought of me in a positive way.
I had excused myself to go to my ship. Nobody important was out and about as I made my way to the docks. I saw a girl there with short brown hair that reached her neck standing and looking over the frozen water. I wanted to just bypass her, but I had to play it safe. I couldn't allow any suspicion to rise, or even be considered. It would be strange if I just walked by without asking how she is. I need to look caring. I slowly approached her.
"Hello.", I greeted her nicely. She turned to see me with her green eyes, before looking back at the ice water.
"Hi.", She said uninterested. Normally everyone's always interested in me. First Elsa, now her too? Am I losing my charm?
"What are you doing here?", I asked out of curiosity. Almost everyone was in the castle keeping warm. What's she doing out here all alone?
"I was just thinking of how the royal sisters are doing.", She answered. "I'm worried about Princess Anna, how she's holding up out there. And Queen Elsa... I don't know what to make of her. But I do hope she's safe as well."
"I'm certain Anna and Elsa will be just fine. And to be honest, nobody knows what to make of Elsa. Everyone has mixed feelings about her.", I said, choosing my words carefully, trying to keep it neutral.
"I guess you're right. Hopefully Elsa comes out alright.", She said with concern in her voice. "What are you doing here anyway?", She asked.
"Just going to my ship to get something warmer to change into.", I answered. It wasn't a lie, just not the whole truth.
"Well, I'll let you get to it.", She said turning to face me. "I better go in before my husband sends out a search party." She chuckled.
She curtseyed and I bowed. After that she left. I watched her walk away. She reminded me of Anna and Elsa. I should have asked for her name. Oh well, not that it matters anyway. She's nobody. I shrugged and continued on my way.
I slowly and casually walked over to find my boat. It was small, but it's speed made up for it. I passed a couple guards, but they just gave me a small nod. Not giving me trouble, but respect. Just the way I liked it. When I got to to the ship with the Southern Isles crest, I boarded it. It wasn't too big, but that was fine. I didn't like to carry dead weight.
I went to my room and quickly changed. The sooner I do this the better. As I was walking out, I saw Dane sitting about and drinking what smelled like coffee. He was nineteen, but he looked more like sixteen with his small stature and young look.
"Dane.", I called. He set his drink down and came quickly.
"Yes Sir?", He bowed and waited to take my orders. His job was mainly cleanup duty and acted as my personal assistant. He did at lot more of the latter. What I like about Dane was that he never questioned me. Maybe that's why he's lasted a lot more than the others.
"I need to you to sent a message over to Commodore John.", I stated.
"Yes, of course Sir.", Dane said. He took out his notebook and a pen to write my message down. Another thing I liked about him was that he was always prepared to take my orders.
"Tell Commodore John I want a fleet here in two days time. And to bring me my weapon. He'll understand what I mean.", I said. I had looked over almost all possible scenarios in my head. The chances of me failing were very low.
"But Sir your father, the King, requested that you not attack or invade Arendelle under any circumstances whatsoever. Or any territory outside of the Southern Isles for that matter.", Dane protested.
"I'm well aware of my father's request. Thank you very much Dane.", I said walking closed to him and he nervously took a step back.
"Do you remember what happened to my last messenger boy, Dane?", I asked casually. He shook his head in fear. Fear was a powerful thing. It had the power to give you control over anyone if you knew how to use it.
"I don't either.", I informed him. His brown eyes widen, and he gulped loudly. Good. "Now do as you're told and don't question me again."
"Ye- ye- Yes sir!", He saluted. I nodded and walked over to the exist. I turned to him at he last minute
"Oh, and Dane?", I called.
"Yes sir?", He looked at me with wide eyes. His hands trembling and I didn't think it was from the cold.
"This never happened.", I walked off the ship and started walking back. Behind me, I heard the ship moving and cracking ice. It was a thin layer of ice, so the ship wouldn't have any problems leaving. Commodore John wasn't stationed too far away. But it would take some time anyway. The fleet should be able to withstand the freeze and go thorough the ice. The ships were built go go anywhere. I started walking around the place, taking in the landscape. I found myself under the waterfall where I had purposed to Anna earlier.
I had a very nice view of Arendelle. The place was ready for take over. With it's queen gone, and replacement out of the picture for now. It's almost too easy. I was even in charged until Anna got back. I felt a surge of impatience in me. Come down Hans, all good things to those who wait. Ah, how fast the night changes. It was lighted and now it's dark to hide my new motives. I hadn't even planned on taking Arendelle. One rule of victory was you see a chance, you take it.
I was certain that nobody trusted Elsa. I saw the fear in their eyes. Anna might be a problem, but I was sure I could convince her otherwise. I already had her under my spell and she didn't even know it. If that failed, I could easily take care of her. It would be a shame too. I found Anna amusing, but a little annoying too. She might have to go anyway. I looked down at the large castle. Soon, you'll all be mine. I thought of the surprise I had for the queen. This should be very interesting. Very interesting indeed. I started walking back to the castle. Time to put on a show.
A/N: What?! Hans is the bad guy? *Gasp Aren't I the most originalist person ever. Did not see that coming at all. Haha Jk. Next Chapter should have Elsa.
